The Bilbao BBK Live Festival is a rock and pop music festival which takes place every summer in the mountains of Kobetamendi Park,
a natural space only 5 minutes from the centre of Bilbao and Barakaldo, with amazing views of Bilbao city and surrounding mountains.
The festival first started in 2006 with a respectful 51.000 people attending, and an equally respectful debut line-up which included
The Cardigans, Guns & roses, Deftones, Placebo and The Pretenders.
More than 300.000 people have attended the festival since it began, with a growing audience of French and British music lovers.
Famous artists who have appeared at the festival include The Police, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, Depeche Mode, Iron Maiden,
Lenny Kravitz, Guns n' Roses, Placebo, Ben Hardper, Jane's Addiction and Blondie.
Placebo is a three-piece alternative rock band, formed in London, United Kingdom, when former Luxembourg schoolmates Brian Molko and
Stefan Olsdal met at South Kensington train station in 1994.
During their accidental meet, Molko invited Olsdal to one of his gigs, where Olsdal was impressed by Molko's unique vocals.
While briefly known as "Ashtray Heart", the Sonic Youth, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins influenced band soon settled on the name Placebo,
after the drug that has no active ingredient but works because the patient believes it does.
Soon after forming, the band could not decide on a permanent drummer, with Steve Hewitt and Robert Schultzberg both alternating on
the spot.
While Hewitt was the preferred choice, he was bound by other musical commitments as drummer for Londo-based band Breed, leading to
Schultzberg being the drummer when the band signed its contract with Caroline Records.
As time went on, Molko and Schultzberg began to drift apart as friends, which eventually led to Molko and Olsdal persuading Hewitt
to rejoin the band shortly after "Placebo" was released.
The band's debut album was recorded between 1995 and 1996 and was followed by a tour of Europe with David Bowie.
With a thirteen year history that takes in five studio albums, ten million album sales, and the dizzy swell of global success,
they were set to return with their first new album since the release of "Meds" in 2006.
Joined by new drummer Steve Forrest, Placebo's latest effort titled "Battle For The Sun" was released on June 8, 2009 on Vagrant
Records in the US and Canada.
It is, according to Brian Molko, almost the flipside of "Meds", he describes it as "not hard rock and not pop, it's probably hard pop".
Recorded over three months at Metal Works Studios in Toronto with producer David Bottrill and mixed in London by My Bloody Valentine,
"Battle For The Sun" is a startling, alive, vital and boundary-vaulting record.
It took the worldwide charts by storm placing #51 on Billboard's Top 200, #8 on the Top Independent Albums Chart, notching Top 10 bows
in UK, Australia, and Sweden, and taking the #1 spot in France, Germany, and Switzerland.
The band's new single, "For What It's Worth" was the first single to be taken from the album and was given its exclusive play in the UK
on Zane Lowe's Radio 1.
Placebo's musical style has not altered between the debut album "Placebo" and "Battle For The Sun", with their early work based around
fairly straightforward guitar playing, often influenced by the style of 1970s British and American rock, and Molko's high-pitched vocals.
The band is considered to be a glam version of Nirvana, and their hit singles "Nancy Boy" and "Pure Morning" are still to this day on the
peak of their British success.
