    Saw them in the UK in 2015. Just wanted to burst into tears when they opened with this - this music meant so much to us when it came out and the feeling never dies.

    Me too Geoffrey was there. A yank in UK on an amazing JS vacation- front row that evening. A memory that still is scintillating and vivd! With Lesley Taylor and the Shipmates.

    I saw the Starship in Cleveland in '73. They opened by doing the entire B side. It is still a strong memory and still holds up. A society with no Utopian impulse is a society doomed. May your head be forever hooked into Andromeda, Paul.

    @@robertcoleman9225 You guys are magical, because Jefferson Starship did not exist until 1974, and the last Airplane tour was in 1972. No Jefferson Anything band toured in 1973.

    It's hard to express how much I love this album. Saw the Starship perform Blows a couple of times in the mid 1970s. Glad I was young enough, but also just old enough, to appreciate it all!

    RIP Paul. It took two to replace Grace, but that was pretty fucking incredible. The trippy space jam was just exactly perfect. RIP Jerry Garcia. Love the way Paul is leading everyone through all the different sections and changes. Amazing.

    Man, this is the shit. I can't believe that was 3 years ago. In a perfect world, this would be in a theater a few times a week. This music is one of a kind and kicks the ass of Blue Man or anything else that has it's own theater.

    and all We got was an Orion test flight in 2014.......What a World We live in, where We could go to other worlds and yet We still choose to kill each other over minor theological differences, rather than experience the joy of increasing Our knowledge of the Universe....loved this since I played My big Brother's (Sadly missed) copy of Blows back in the 70's.and read His copy of Methuselahs Children of course.

    If I had a few million dollars, I would commission a symphonic composer, (maybe the brilliant guy doing old silent soviet film scores) to compile Kantner’s music with JA and JS jam instrumental lines (Slick Aguilar in particular) into a set of works for full symphonic orchestra and choir and stage a massive performance just to hear what it would sound like, what the critics would write, to see if it would spark further performances, leave it to posterity as a great work of art. With Blows as the centerpiece, one hundred voices singing: “Have you seen the stars tonight?”

    Two female leads, and they don't add up to one-half of Grace Slick's powerful voice. However, they're keeping this music alive, so that's OK. I always thought this album was vastly Under-rated. It had a bit of a Dense sound, but all the people on it Jelled very well. As a Concept album, it would be entirely appropriate, if it were released today.

    I do remember when this album came out, the ultimate hippy fantasy (and great music ). Of course, some credit should probably have gone to Robert Heinlein (or perhaps it was?)

  • @beamjockey

    @beamjockey

    +Peter Osborn Yes, Heinlein gave Kantner permission, and got credit. Read this: books.google.com/books?id=MQPHAgAAQBAJ&pg=PA312#v=onepage&q&f=false See also Kantner's liner notes from the 2005 re-issue CD of "Blows against the Empire."

    And for fans of the band, longtime Guitarist Slick Aguilar is ill and needs a liver transplant. That is him wailing away in this video. His illness prevents him from working and he needs help with expenses. Good karma and the joy of helping someone who has brought us all a lot of joy awaits those who can afford to help. Please google Slick Aguilar & go to his Facebook page to find out how to help. Autographed posters, photos, etc await in return for a small donation to his medical fund. Thanks
