========================================
Rid of Me covers a variety of topics, and Harvey sought to achieve a unique sound. Hiring Steve Albini because of her reported admiration for his work with the Pixies and Slint, Harvey composed songs with distinct time signatures and made lyrics that could be widely interpreted by the listener.

    To Bring You My Love is my favourite album, Rid of me is a close second. PJ is painfully underrated.

    Rid Of Me is the best and most extreme one of them all. To Bring You My Love is a bit less distinct, has more non-rock songs, and the rock songs tend to sound very slickly mixed and “commercial” in the way that major label alternative rock often was in the mid-90s. Also, I think all the songs are in 4/4 time except for “Send His Love To Me” which is 6/4. That said, there are some great tracks on it, like the title track, “Teclo”, and “I Think I’m A Mother.”

    Loved your reaction to this. If you like this album, you should listen to the band’s first one, Dry, from the previous year 1992. I want to add several notes: I don’t know what website you’re reading from, but there are mistakes in the lyric transcriptions, biographical material, and song interpretations. “Missed” isn’t about Mary, Queen of Scots; it’s primarily about Christian mythology: ‘Mary’ is Jesus’s mother, her son is Jesus; “no, I’ve missed him” means I don’t see evidence of his existence anywhere, despite him being so ‘big’; “I’ve missed …” means either “I’ve lost it” or “I’ve misplaced it” or “I haven’t come across it” in British English usage. there is a sort of tossed-off reference to Mary, Queen of Scots with the line “lost her head”, but that’s not the focus of the song. It’s Harvey utilizing a technique Dylan employed on “Highway 61” - it starts out being about one specific thing and then goes off in different directions. Harvey also does this on “Water” from the album Dry, which is clearly about Biblical stories and Jesus walking on water, but *also* contains a reference to the myth of Icarus. “Missed” is really a sarcastic declaration of un-belief in any gods (Harvey was raised without religion in her household and only came to investigate Christianity and other mythology at school). As for the weird guitar tremolo strumming on “Legs”, I believe that’s her strumming a violin or another stringed instrument (not guitar). There are other violin and string instrument parts on that song and others, which Harvey plays. The strings on “Man-Sized Sextet” were arranged by the brilliant drummer Rob Ellis, but I don’t think anyone in the trio band played the instruments on that song (don’t have the record handy to check the credits). For me this album is her greatest, and that’s thanks to her brilliant guitar tone and playing (yes it’s all her), the odd time signatures, the intricate and POWERFUL drumming, and Albini’s naturalistic recording style. “Man-Size” is my lifelong favorite. Just *try* to get your head around that time signature. It’s a challenge.

    thank you for the in depth comment, kinda hard to go into every lyric in a perfect way at the first listen but thank you for this :D I read all the additional lyrics on Genius (the problem is that people like e.g. me are commenting there and mostly not people that really knows something 100%)

    There is an upload of Rob conducting the sextet for this track, it looks like the sextet were playing/recorded in a small club/theatre, sorry I don't have a link as it's a while since I saw it. Totally agree with you about Rob, a very talented polyrhythmic, self taught drummer who has gone on to produce and contribute for many other bands.

    I've not heard this album... I like "Stories from the cities, Stories from the sea" and "Let England Shake"... Those 2 are only ones i've heard and i like them a lot, but they need more listens ig... BTW at 1:45 , Slint's Spiderland is one of my favourite album ever, like one of 4-5 10/10 for me from 90s is Spiderland... I still to this date can't find a proper categorization for spiderland due to how unusual it is, and nothing i've heard till this date satisfies my itch for the sound like that... I found it from fantano's classic review and i absolutely love the album... Sadly there are only 15-20 slint songs ever which makes it so sad, 2 from ep, 6 from spiderland, and idk debut isn't so great as far as i've heard...

    Rid of Me is an interesting song. Most people think it is about a guy or relationship, but to me it sounds more dualistic - I've always thought it was more about herself, her demons which she could not get rid of as you commented on at the start. The way it is sung, almost bi-polar in nature how it begins so quietly but transitions quickly into much a much more aggressive manner, like two parts of the same person battling with themselves. Also, please listen to album 4-Track Demos as many of the same songs are on there, but done in a really raw, dirty style that I think you will enjoy.
