This idea is brilliant and easy, I took the idea and ran with it. We cut a hole in some plywood with a support for the ball underneath to make it more secure. Around here I didn't have access to pumice so I substituted lava rock then added stainless concrete needles that I bought with my refractory concrete. My dome slipped off of my wheelbarrow onto the patio when we were putting it in place and it bounced and didn't crack. The one mistake I think he made was having the door on the outside, that's fine when your using it but if your trying to hold heat for a longer period of time all the heat goes up the chimney . We set our steel oven door past where the chimney is so after the pizza party is over you can put in a pork shoulder and have pulled pork for the next morning. Great addition to any backyard. Thanks so much.Brad Hansen

I've read that perlite absorbes water. How long would it have to cure before first fireing? Would't exposing it to rain and dampness couse cracking to the dome when heated up? Great tutorial. I was thinking about digging my gym ball hals into the ground than adding opening.

You could try Perlite or Vermiculite mix as well. All these mixes are light and don't hold much heat but reflect the heat around the dome to cook.Pizza stones or clay tiles on the floor also hold heat !

Best to use air compressor to pump up gym ball to desired size and balance on a rubbish bin with padding ! My oven is about 750mm diameter, height is half=375mm,door is supposed to be about 63% of height but mine is 210mm high,410 wide with 14 mm rebate for door.Dome was built over 5 days with stable weather and is 25mm thick with about 5mm stucco with 30mm base and used about 50 litres of mix and weighs about 25-30 kg ! Be careful rotating gym ball and use chair or wall as support as it becomes lopsided and may roll of the bin! Good luck Kazim! This one is made from the same pumice mix kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6N-xJSIptGclLQ.html

JJGrice018 -- Wow! Inspirational! I was resigned to the fact that I would have to pay a mason a lot of money to build me a very heavy pizza oven. Can't wait to try this in the upcoming months! Question: In some of the earth ovens and traditional fire brick ovens, they put an insulation blanket between the structure and the final finishing coat of stucco or other material. Would that be possible with your design, to help hold the heat for multiple cooks on the same fire? It sounds like fire brick and pumice/perlite have different functions, so maybe that wouldn't work. Thought I would ask. You're awesome!

***** Thanks for watching Rodney! My aim was to show people that a gym ball makes a good form for a pizza oven whatever material you are using.Pumice insulates and reflects the heat and the clay tiles and pizza stone hold heat enough for a few hours. When it cools after cooking pizza you can put the door on and bake bread ,etc !

Nice oven.. How much pumice did you use for the oven? Also about how much does a bag cost and what size? I want to make one an was wondering also how it's holding up to high heat.

Hi - Thanks very much for sharing. I'm in the US and having difficulty finding Pumice for retail customers. There is plenty of perlite and vermiculite in retail stores. Do these have the same refractive properties? My understanding of your design is that the dome is for heat refraction primarily and the firebrick floor is the absorption of heat. Like you, my intention is to make a few pizzas and don't need the loads of insulation on the dome for bread baking etc. All that said - do you have any idea if the perlite and vermiculite can be used to replace the pumice in your design? Lastly, How do you think these will weather a winter of snow and 10 degree days? Thanks!

Timothy Miller I double wrap pumice in an old bed sheet and crush with a 5 foot length of 4x4 inch hardwood and sieve through a net a little bit bigger than a fly screen for the stucco.Between 2-3mm is the biggest .Not very hi-tech but is good exercise !

Good job on the oven. I thought that was a rocket stove in the background then I saw your video on that as well. I was thinking of doing the same thing but just using cob as the oven but the gym ball as the form. I'd just make sure the air hole is where the door would go then when it dried I would deflate it. Then use the pumice or perlite as an insulation layer on top and as a light weight door. I like your idea for this and the rockt stove. That should be really light weight to take camping if you wanted to.

Seezor Thanks for watching ! This was an experiment in casting on a gym ball and using your cob would be the cheapest method and easy to repair any minor cracks that may appear.

Thanks for yr reply mate. I looked at the video where you fired up the oven but I did not see a pizza being baked. Would be great to see the result, just to verify your model works. If it does, you may consider patenting your concept! Just to make sure about the insulation, did you by any chance record the temp inside the oven with for instance an IR thermometer?

After 2 months of curing and a few small fires to break the oven in i'll be cooking a pizza soon ! I'll invest in a infra-red thermometer soon but small fires show about 175c or 350f on my standard thermometer!

Hey there, How do you make the mix stick on the gym ball so well without it slipping off? I tried to build this but it cracked all around (maybe because I wasn't consistent with the cement ratio). Also, At the opening shot of the video it almost looks like there's two layers of concrete mix, is that the case or did you wet the outside? Would appreciate your help! Thanks!

I did a section at a time over 5 days and roll the ball as you go.Wrapping in clingfilm as you coat ball may stop it sliding if you do in one go but I haven't tried yet.It is only one layer thick with pumice stucco coating.Best to make centre dome area thicker as it gets most heat.See new oven here>kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3VoxsumZ7HgnZc.html
