Had a minim for ages and eventually got the Alce osd version 3 I believe. The difference in the font display is so cool, unfortunately that board never hit home. The good thing is, I've still got mine 😁

Never used alce because I found very little support online, and it seems rather underdeveloped (I believe only 1 person is actively working on it atm). The Holybro OSD is superior imo.

I really like the matek wing FC for a hobby plane.

F722 wing is no joke. I love it. I'm sure h722 is coming soon! (though I guess faster cpu's mean less on planes... I fly multirotors).

I notice the choices are limited for this osd . I like to display propeller rpm. I find that is a consistent way to gage thrust at any point in flight including when the bat voltage is low . As far as I know you can only get rpm from using 32 bit blheli esc and passing thru its telemetry . can I do that with this ? will my ground station telemetry still work unchanged as I can get rpm there . thanks for good video . your very good at picking good subjects with a lot of questions

VTX is the same one listed in the manual. I always use MenaceRC antennas here. Happy flying!

Hi just a question regarding FPV for a newbie, can you advise on some good options for a set that is cheap? i currently have a Volantex Phoenix V2 with a ZOHD Lite flight controller installed and it works brilliantly, my TX & RX are FlySky FS-i6X / FS-iA6B so don't want to have to replace these, what i am looking for is a FPV that i can set up that is cheap and does not need OSD just good range etc, i have come across the Eachine EV100 goggles and also what power does the camera transmitter need to be to get signal up to 1 mile in open areas with no interference, i just want to see where i am going once line of site diminishes too much like over 600m, i will have my mate spotting too.

@Painless360 I noticed when plugging in the ftdi adapter to the osd, you didn't wire the "DTR" pin like the manual says. Was this intentional? Secondly, my vtx and cam (both which can take batt voltage) were already directly wired to batt voltage on my PM-07 PDB. Should I reroute their power through the osd, or will that make no difference (aka... Leave it as is)?

I use it that way as the DTR pin isn't normally used. If the OSD works ok, then I'd leave it. Happy flying!

That should work - with a bit of soldering. If you're going to do that then a full Micro MinimOSD may be a more configurable option (if a little more work)...

@@Painless360 keep in mind... The og minim osd's work TERRIBLY with 915 MHz and 433 MHz telemetry radios (like 3dr's sik radios). I have NO IDEA why, but the osd goes really dim and is almost unreadable. This is a known problem by the Holybro devs (they think it's a ground isolation issue).

Hi, thanks for the video. I think its possible to have two devices connected to one pixhawk telemetry port.I have problem make it working though. I've connected minim osd and also bluetooth module. The problem that I have is that minim osd only shows telemetry data if the bluetooth module is also connected. But if its not connected, minim osd says no data available. Is it something that you can help me to resolve ? Thanks in advance 😊

I wonder if you could help me a little with my new Jumper T18 pro. I watched all your videos on the T16 and maybe missed something, and as of yet there is not too much out there on the T18 pro. I have managed to set the arm/disarm switch to SF but now my problem is that i can't find how to set any of the 3 position switches to change the flight command. For example SE, will show +100, middle posn shows 0, bottom posn shows -100 yet it does not change on the model. It is like the model (aircraft) does not see the command. Some small models like the little P51 and the Little Corsair there are shoulder buttons on the right and left sides of the stock transmitter that make command changes. How do I tell the jumper how to mimic the stock transmitter. Would I have to try each switch one after the other until the jumper found it? I am trying to do all this in the mix part of the jumper program. Should I be in another part of the program. I got lumps from banging my head on the wall !! lol.. In shorter terms I just want to fly my models and be able to use all their functions like A and B, and the other button A,B,C ... and somehow transfer this information to the jumper. Is it even possible? Either way, keep up the great videos, they are very helpful to every one in the hobby. Happy Flying

Inspired by your video, I just received the Micro OSD V2 from 3DRX Please tell me, what is the operating voltage of the Micro OSD V2. My camera system is working on the voltage from a 4S battery. Is this voltage acceptable with the Micro OSD V2?

The osd has 2 leads (the only 2 presoldered wires) for battery voltage. It gets its power from the 5v on the Telem port however.

Where are you displaying feed from the camera? On the dedicated screen or on a PC? I have QGC but no camera feed :-( Everything is connected correctly, but I have not changed parameters yet.

So Mission Planner now has an OSD tab for layout. would this work for minim type osd or is that only there to support betaflight type boards with built in osd?

It's for FC s with an inbuilt OSD. See my Arduplane builds from last summer... Happy flying

For a surveying drone, how would something like this compare to transmitting video feed via wifi from a companion computer? I've tested video transmission from a raspberry pi to a laptop using only the inbuilt wifi antennae (I would use external USB dual band antennae in a real system) and the latency ranges from about 0.2 seconds for low quality to over a second for higher quality video feed. The advantage would be the ability to overlay all kinds of information onto the video feed using opencv.

There are lots of options for getting video back to goggles/screen or ground-station and they vary in quality, price and latency. There isn't one system that is perfect for every situation. I've not tried getting analogue FPV onto a PC but you could use any video style capture card/dongle as it is a standard video.. Best of luck!

I think that support for BLHeli was added after support for APM finished so probably not. ardupilot.org/copter/docs/common-brushless-escs.html#common-brushless-escs

Strange that Holybro are using such an old style of the software that you use to change the layout. Looks exactly the same as the early version used for minimosd. I guess they just wanted to keep it all as simple as possible. (I think we are all familiar with the nightmare of getting the correct Hex files to work with the correct font files, etc.). I wonder if it would ever be possible to have a separate osd board that used the chipset and protocol that the built in osd's on things like the Omnibus and F405 Wing use, then being able to configure it from within Mission Planner.

@@Painless360 any idea why they don't include an osd on the pixhawk 4 for example? Seems to come standard in most f7/h7 fpv boards. I get pixhawk 4 isn't exactly fpv focused, but seems like an oversight.

Can anyone please confirm in this exact same setup that the “Mode” indicator is changing from anything else than just “Stab” when changing modes? All other functions are working fine on the OSD. Mode:stab

Hello, i bought a video transmitter + camera setup to attach to the pixhawk 2.1 but the operating voltage of the transmitter goes from 7V to 12V. I tried to connect it to the RC in pins but they are only giving 6V, so it's not working. Is it possible to make those pins give more voltage through the ardupilot software or is that only related to the battery im using? because i know that i can attach servos that can work around 10.5V maximum Thank you

You need something that will provide the voltage and current it needs. I'd use a BEC from the flight battery voltage. Matek do some very small compact UBECs that can provide 7 and 12v.. See my builds. Best of luck!

Do you have an updated video on MinimOSD? I had a problem with mine where it was intermittently not working, and had very severe horizontal lines while flying my quad, turned out modern video transmitter only provides 5V instead of 12V (which I prefer) but through the reverse-polarity protection diode and dropout voltage of the buck regulator, the voltage to the MAX chip was around 4.8V and not enough to work! I Took a whole damn day to figure out! 😒 It seems some Russian dude picked up on the development of the OSD, although maybe that dried up to given last commit was 2018.

@@Painless360 Ardupilot does make mention of integrated OSD for some targets, I have a pixhawk, which happens to have an SPI interface on it just like the MAX chip. Is it possible in theory to connect it directly to the pixhawk and configure OSD in mission planner or qgroundcontrol?

Yep on-baord OSDs not fully supported - You watch a lot of my videos so I'm guessing you missed all of the videos from Summer 2018 on the Arduplane builds using an Omnibus and Matek FC with an OSD?

Great Video series. I have a problem with this micro OSD unit. I have been setting up a Pixhawk 4 mini on a plane. I have a micro OSD V2 as you have demonstrated. I have a Taranis x9D+ outputting (FRSKY 8XR receiver using SBUS to Pixhawk) RSSI to Ch8 and Mission Planner configured to RSSI_CHANNEL 8 and RSSI_TYPE 2 so it reads the RSSI from the SBUS. In Mission planner HUD I can see the CH8 PWM values fluctuate and RXRSSI follows the RSSI on the Taranis. However, although I can configure the OSD screens as you showed, I cannot find a way to get the RSSI to display. Yes, that option is ticked in the configuration utility. The RSSI icon doesn't appear, nor any value. I did not see RSSI in your video. Have you got it to work? What is the secret? Any help would be appreciated. I have searched the net and other KZread videos for days.

Update - The response from Holybro regarding the configuration of their micro OSD v2 was at best cryptic. They suggested configuring settings not visible to me in the Mission planner , such ensuring OSD1_RSSI_EN was set to enable. I configured my micro OSD v2 with the ArduCAM OSD config utility, just as you did. This is linked to in Holybro's Full Manual and Installation guide pdf. Settings such as OSD1_RSSI_EN are not mentioned, so I do not think the answer given to me fits the question I asked. Like you I do not have time to compensate for the failings of manufactures so I bought another mini OSD and configured it through the MinimOSD-Extra firmware from Night Ghost. This is all nicely described on the Ardupilot.org site, so your not left guessing how to get it to work properly. Once I updated the characture set and flashed the latest version or the firmware to the board (Use the one ending "...MAVLINK-release.hex and not "...MAVLINKPX4-release.hex {Flight controller is a Pixhawk 4 mini}) I was able to configure a screen, and then test it on my plane. RSSI works fine. Flight modes needed the updated characture set to disply correctely. Hope you don't mind the update. I have always been very grateful to those who have taken the time to post resolutions to issues like this. It might save someone else hours of frustration. PS- Enjoyed the video on the new Talon Pro. Have you actually flown one yet? I have a birthday comming up and am tempeted to get one.

Not yet, that is a model that will possibly be on the channel in the Autumn. The OSD from HolyBro is locked so that some of the things that you can do with other 'open' hardware can't be done with the HolyBro unit (like load other fonts fro example).. Happy flying!

Hi Lee, hope you are keeping well, I still don't understand why pixhawk as chunky as its, still hasn't got inbuilt OSD!! I mean there are flight controllers 3 times smaller and yet do come with inbuilt osd. A quick question if I may, I've got dji ocusync connected to telemetry 1 port, I'm getting voltage, sat numbers, and a couple of other info, just can't get lat/long coordinates, I don't suppose you have played with ocusync yet have you? Anyways would be good to see you at a drone show, if there will be one any time soon due to the current pandemic 😔

The Pixhawk hardware is not aimed at the FPV side of flying but if you want solid flying and bullet proof GPS mission flying for surveying, filming or reconnacance - its a top pick.. Happy flying.

Agree, the OSD-part of Ardupilot is still on the same level as 10 years back in my opinion with the MinimOSD and this states the focus area I believe. This is more for the autonomous crafts where you monitor and control it from a ground station (check out RCTestFlight magical videos). I started off with Ardupilot for FPV wing flight but have recently moved to a setup with Matek F722 boards with INav which is a more all-in-one solution for the hobbyist. Here you can get pitot tube, gps, status display, buzzer, power-monitoring, power pins, switchable camera inputs, vtx out, lots of uarts, lots of servo ports connected directly into a single unit. This is easily configured with a PC or using the UART-Bluetooth/USB-Bluetooth devices from SpeedyBee and a iOS/Android device making field configuration a blast.

@@Painless360 True, your OSD IS Mission Planner on a 17 inch laptop screen. Running something like Crossfire Full with MavLink/bluetooth, you control everything from your PC. Technically you don't even need a radio.

Problem is you are stuck with the limited set of telemetry options and font that the obsolete (2012) Arducam OSD offers. It's basically a non flashable micro miniOSD with a ready made Pixhawk connector.

What I heard from this video is avoid Minim OSD, which has a professional configurator and complete feature support, because FTDI is a pain. Buy this PNP solution for USD 20 because it has connectors and a default layout. If you want to configure it in any way, buy the FTDI adapter that we are trying to avoid, use the limited proprietary interface, and forget about bold fonts. Lastly, become dependent on Holybro to keep their limited configurator up-to-date. Any other interpretations?

@@tedhancock68 I'm not sure what they've done with this. Hardware wise it's a micro mini osd. Same chipsets, but it wont flash with MWOSD, they didn't put a CTS connection on just DTR. That, in theory, shouldn't matter if you ground the CTS connector on the FTDI adapter, it fools the FTDI to write enabled all the time, but, no go. It simply does not go into a flash enabled state. The AT328P chip can be flashed, or connected in a boot protected mode, I suspect that's what they did.

question. so i have this exact camera setup but trying to get it to transmit to back to Mission planner over the TCP connection and not through a video transmitter. do you know what steps i need to take to get that to work?

Hello Lee top video after seeing this video Ive purchased a holybro Micro OSD V2 thing is I'm trying to wire it to my TBS Unify Pro32 5G8 HV Has anyone out here on the net and in reality done this? the vtx output port on the OSD has NC pin is this the smartaudio pin. as the vtx you plugged it in to says this pin is for smartaudio. The naming NC is confusing me any help is appreciated....

Check on the specs for the board you're using. Full specs and wiring are on the Matek website..

Huh... I'm not flying anymore - Too much of a R.P.I.T.A. to deal with people concerned about my hobby exploiting their privacy - so I'm not UpToDate anymore with what has moved on but it looks like practically nothing has happened in regards to PixHawk and OSDs... My TBS Discovery PRO back then already had a MinimOSD installed and by the looks of what I remember setting it up is as much of a P.I.T.A. now as it was back then - Super unimpressed 😑

I'd describe myself more as a selective viewer viewing mostly stuff that is ( or apparently was ) of interest to me like the OpenTX stuff which were of much value back then in getting my Tamiya Tanks ( imgur.com/zp3hFxS ) back up and running due to the ever so increasing lack of analogue trims on modern remotes but, technically, required for those Models. OpenTX also saved my butt after upgrading my #56020 Leopard 2A6 to a 2A7+ model while also integrating a 3rd party 2-Axis Stabilizer module ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWyHwc5-YKWad8Y.html ) that wouldn't play nice with accessing the stock functions of the Tank - OpenTX again allowed me to remedy that the issues by triggering the action for less than 0.3sec regardless for how long a Switch would be held high thus being low enough to trigger the desired effect ( like turning off the engine ) but not the 3rd party modules overlay turning the turret using the same channel 🙃
