[GOOGLE PIXEL 8A REVIEW]
After a spring season of AI gadgets that relied more on hype-y buzz than handy benefits, we’re back to basics with a phone that - not for the first time - I’ve called a “palate cleanser.” The latest A-series Pixel from Google has no bleeding-edge new form factors to cope with; no new interface modalities to learn. It’s just a good phone, with useful features, for under $500. And get this: even the AI stuff is useful (on occasion). Join me for a road trip review to Google I/O, with the Pixel 8a.
[ABOUT MRMOBILE'S PIXEL 8A REVIEW]

I just upgraded from a Pixel 4a 5G, and it does need to be said that the Pixel 8a's bezels are comparatively humongous *and* less symmetrical than the 4a 5G's. I don't know how but Google managed to make their phones both more expensive while feeling cheaper.

@onthefence928 okay. I will. This will be a little long because it's a review, just FYI Do not buy this phone right now. Even though I love Pixel phones, and folding phones. And even though I'm using the pixel phone when I also have a pixel 7 pro I could be using as my daily driver. I came from using a z fold 2. Before this Samsung, I was using pixel phones and I still kept a pixel phone as a backup while using it. I love the big screen of folding phones. The outer screen of the fold 2 was garbage. Too slim to do most things on it. The transition to the pixel fold was a mix of good and bad. The outer screen is excellent. It's closer to the 18:9 aspect ratio that phones had for several years. I think all phones should have this aspect ratio. Most are a taller 20:9. It's unnecessary height. Most videos are 16:9 and 18:9 allows you room for notifications at the top and navigation at the bottom. But although the outer screen of this phone is great, the problem is the inner screen. The inner screen of the Pixel fold is the same size as Samsung's current folds. It only opens in a different orientation. There's nothing wrong with the crease. It's as deep as a z fold but wider so it's much smoother to swipe over. The problem is the orientation. I thought I would love a landscape orientation over portrait orientation so it could be more like a tablet or computer. But most apps were never optimized for this aspect ratio. And they can't be optimized for landscape orientation. You typically get a 16:9 aspect ratio app unless you force it to widescreen. You're actually getting a shorter app than on the outside screen because the outside screen is taller. Internet browsers, maps, and native Google apps are the only ones that can properly take advantage of this screen. Forcing an app to fill the screen causes glitches and is not a good experience. Other apps can't take advantage of the landscape orientation because they would have to do a major overhaul of the app. And developers don't have the motivation to do that. Even Google has made their search results on computer and tablet browsers to mimic what you get on a mobile phones by making the search results slimmer. One thing that might improve your experience on the pixel fold is to turn it to landscape orientation once you unfold the phone. You can lock the outside screen to portrait orientation and leave the inside screen unlocked separately. But if you're like me, you don't like an unlocked screen orientation because you will get unintentional changing when you tilt your phone. At one point you could lock the inner screen to portrait orientation, but it will now automatically default back to locked landscape once you've used the phone closed and then open it. But even still, if you put the inner screen in portrait orientation, it's not as good a z fold on portrait because they have optimized the apps. Like with Facebook putting all of the menu buttons on the side of the screen and allowing you more vertical scrolling on the rest of the screen. Even though there's this close working relationship with Samsung and Google, they haven't ported over these optimized apps to the pixel fold. And then you have what was the biggest complaint about this phone when it first came out: The bezels. After you use this phone, you will find the bezels to be the least of your concerns. They completely disappear from your periphery. If you've ever used a tablet, laptop, or computer, you've had bezels, and those bezels were bigger than what you get on this phone's inner screen. But sure, it would be nicer if those bezels weren't there. It's simply not the issue It was made out to be in the beginning. I guarantee that's why Michael Fisher has moved back to the pixel fold. But lastly, we need to talk about the cameras. The pixel fold has solid pixel photos. But I was incredibly disappointed. For s specific reason. A plus of the folding phones is being able to use the main cameras for selfies and video. I was a bit devastated when I tried using this setup to take a selfie on a lit up city street at night. It's way too dark even with night sight. I get better selfies from the selfie camera of my pixel 7 pro than I do on the main cameras of the pixel fold. Video is barely any better on the main cameras of the pixel folds than they are of the selfie camera on the pixel 7 pro, if any. My z fold 2 offered such an upgrade when using the outer cameras versus typical selfie cameras. The selfies of a Samsung fold with the main cameras were much better than what you got from the selfie cameras of an S Ultra. You simply don't get this benefit with the pixel fold. One bonus niche scenario I'll talk about is multitasking on the Pixel Fold. You'll rarely ever use it, but it's great when you have your phone in a holder in your car and you can have your music app open on one half the screen while navigating on the other half of the screen. It works much better on the pixel fold than a Samsung fold because on the Samsung you're getting two slim versions of the app and they don't work good, just like the outer screen. In conclusion, unless you get a really good price on this phone and you're willing to work with its quirks, I would definitely wait for the second iteration of this phone that should come out in October.

Not only does it work great with 3rd party hardware, but 7 years of updates? I was sold. The stock android 14 made it easy to transition as well. I noticed lots of similarities between iOS and stock android 14.

i for one didn't even realize there's a "chin" but i did not hold it in hand. my sister has a pixel 6a and every time we meet you can see it on her how impressed she is with it and especially the camera showing me what great photos she took at this wedding or that trip... she's just a normal phone user, even pays for google one space because the phone told her "she has no space" (she does have space on the phone) but these smarter features on the pixels do translate well into good user experience. the other day i saw on reddit a post about some life hack to get LESS spam calls and i just realized that people on iphones still have to deal with that. the smart features really do make these phones very useful for normal people..

Happy to see another smartphone review 🙌 (especially with the gorgeous snippets of Oracle Park, go Giants 🧡🖤). I'm wondering if you'll be doing a review of the Xperia 1 VI? Apparently Sony aren't bothering with offering it in the US this year, but as an international viewer I'd be interested to hear your trusted views on Sony's latest imminent flagship. Personally I've never watched a film on my 1 iii (insert David Lynch meme) and the display rarely actually ran at 4K anyway so I'm not sure if the resolution downgrade will be as personally significant as many are bemoaning it to be, although I do wonder about the wider form factor and vertical real estate sacrifice. I'd be curious to know your experience with battery life versus their claims too, as well as performance. Regardless, a headphone jack, expandable storage, and a blemish-free display isn't something to be taken for granted in 2024. I'm still struggling to stomach the price tag tbh, despite having placed a preorder 😬 (their inclusion of the XM5 headphones as a preorder bonus is slightly softening the blow though)

I love my pixel 5a. The battery still lasts 2-3 days for me. Sadly I'm really reluctant to upgrade now that they've gotten rid of the headphone jack.

Did you experience any thermal issues with the phone? I've read complaints of the Pixel 8 overheating...

I hated how finicky the screen is on the Pixel 8. It often just didn't respond to touch. I picked up an S24+ as soon as it was available. And I've been super happy with it.

I have really enjoyed the Pixel 7 Pro, and seeing this review and others makes it all the more frustrating that Google hasn't done a better job with marketing the Pixel phone line. There is no good reason a company of this size and resource pool hasn't managed to make the Pixel name every bit as automatic as Galaxy. If the phones were junk you'd understand it, but that's not the case and it makes the branding failure more painful. Great video as always!

I would go back to Pixel if they just fixed the modem and the background app usage. Both drain the battery way to fast. I have the S24+ and it lasts way longer than the Pixel 8 Pro i had before.

Michael, just a heads up that Google may be inflating the pixel 8a's price on purpose. We bought various units on pre-order and after launch for under 250 euros at both electronics store and carriers. At this price, the value proposition is insane. We fournished the whole family with 8a for 214,90 euros a piece.

I've bought the 'a' variant pixel since the 4a, but no more. They're not "budget" anymore so I'm just gonna buy the base Pixel on sale from now on staying with the 9.
