Pixar is FAILING, but here's how to FIX IT

Фильм және анимация

The newest Pixar movie Elemental has just released in theaters (not on Disney+ surprisingly), and its opening weekend was the lowest box office in Pixar Studios history. Disney has not been putting Pixar in the best position since it's glory days of Toy Story, Monster's INC, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Up, as it has turned out mediocre spin offs like Monster's University, Finding Dory, and Incredibles 2, along with putting movies on Disney Plus like Soul, Luca, and Turning Red. After the failure or Lightyear and Elemental, Disney has announced Pixar will be making more sequels like Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 5, after their 2024 movie Elio releases into theaters. Has Disney animation screwed Pixar over? Are there too many Pixar sequels? Can Pixar be saved? Why is Pixar bad now? This and everything related to the problem with Pixar will be answered in this video, as we talk about the four biggest challengers Pixar has faced since Toy Story 3!

The saddest part is... Pixar did everything right, with Elemental. People accuse it of being basic, but these are the same individuals who are sick and tired of Superhero films... tired of the "dire circumstance" plot... tired of the endless sequels, remakes, and politics... tired of the previewing homework, the after viewing homework... having to watch multiple different, otherwise unrelated shows and spin-offs to understand the story... they're tired of the mediocre visuals, and unoriginal stories... Pixar remedied all that with Elemental... and the only failures were from whoever set the release date, and the marketing team... but honestly, there's a huge part of me that believes that was intentional by Disney, for all of the above reasons, because sequels are safe... original stuff is financially risky... so if Elemental, Elio, and Wish fail... they can use that to justify wiping new content from their release schedule for the next 15 years... and I can't stand to see Pixar go down like this. Elemental is a beautifully animated, genuine, wholesome story, written by a director who cared about telling a story... and why Disney executives can't see that as a good thing, is beyond me... but audiences fell for it hook, line, and sinker... whoever posted that Twitter picture of Wade and Lake, insinuating that Wade was non-binary, and that had anything to do with this film, should be fired, along with the racial tension virtue-signaling, because every conservative news outlet gobbled that up like candy, resulting in a boycott of a film that does literally everything they've been asking for... and Disney will use that 2-fold... one to say homophobia and racists causes the demise, and two, that people don't "really" want the traditional values they claim to... all so they can justify stuffing new content into the closet and locking the door. I'm really glad you liked Elemental, and you make some amazing points. I truly hope this isn't the end of Pixar. I'm ecstatic to see them in theaters again. Take care, my friend!

Thanks for the long comment! Completely agree on a lot of points you bring up, especially with marketing in terms of release date and setting it up for failure almost from the jump. It seems like they're going to make a push for Wish, hopefully they do the same for their other animated studio in the future before Cars 4 comes out...

Hoping that the good word-of-mouth will allow Elemental to break even, because they got a bad hand from Disney- the same bad hand that Strange World got. Maybe then, Disney will respect Pixar originals to not put them in the most packed months, or giving significantly less, untruthful advertising

@@Unsweetened8618 it's totally nothing like either of those films at all. The only similarity is humanizing things that aren't human, which is pretty standard for most kids films new and old. Lion King, Great Mouse Detective, Land Before Time, American Tail, Toy Story, etc. because animation is the only medium where it CAN be done. As far as Elemental's plot, it's a simple love story. It doesn't get too deep for kids to understand or adults to feel "challenged", but it doesn't really have to.

I think the reason movies aren't doing so well nowadays is that a movie ticket and going to the movie theatres is an expensive outing. You pay close to $20 per ticket and pay more for refreshments during the movie. You can't pause the movie to have a break and have to sit next to possible obnoxious moviegoers. It's not worth it since you could rent the movie for $5 on a streaming service 6 months later if you really want to see it, and it gives you time to hear feedback from people who have seen the movie. Elemental falls under the storyline of "been there, done that" considering zootopia's take on the racism theme and all the "forbidden romance" stories that have existed and will continue to exist, and doesn't really pertain to me. I wouldn't probably watch it even if it was free because I'd rather do other things with my time. I think even zootopia falls flat on the racism theme and nick's story in the original would've worked way better and be more realistic.

Elemental was a beautiful greatly told story. It’s doing better in box office. I do agree with setting the bar high but everyone has to understand, not every story is going to be the same or told the same is the generation from 1995-2010. I think Pixar is doing better than Disney though when it comes to Box Office.

Yeah, an opening week is never the sign of how a movie will do in theaters overall. And you’re so right about people also just not being used to Pixar movies in theaters now since the last 4 (I think?) before Lightyear were almost exclusively on Disney +. If Pixar can make even slightly better films than Elemental and hopefully take cues from the current post-spiderverse stylized 3D animation trend, they should be back in favor with movie lovers at least even if not the general public. I honestly think they should do a thing where they show all the Disney + exclusives in theaters. People would probably like that and some might check out Soul, Onward, Luca, and Turning Red where they wouldn’t have otherwise. I love all those films and I think others would to if given the chance to see them in the best viewing method, and the one they were intended for.

Overall the most thing is to have hope that Pixar will eventually turn itself around. Also I say an important thing they need to stop following these forced kids movie rules others have been following and starting writing a variety of different kinds of stories, especially ones with physical villains who somehow get comeuppances (whether they be death, prison, or something else). And quit it with the insistence on family and parents (we need a break!)

Pixar needs to innovate. There's no use on releasing an original idea if it's just mid. There's no use to release a well beloved sequel if it's gonna under perform *ahem Incredibles 2* I feel they need to think bigger. They have tough competitors now. They used to be the competition but we are not in the 2000s anymore. Technology can do for other animation companies what Pixar used to be when they lead the game of amazing and realistic visuals. But there's no use of pretty visuals with no story, like it was for The Good Dinosaur. Just like Disney was when Snow White released to lead 2D, just like Pixar was when they release Toys Story for 3D and storytelling, just like it was for DreamWorks when they released Shrek to add pop-culture references, just like Spider-Verse is doing for Sony nowadays. They need something bigger, newer, they need to dare to make something amazing, not stick to the same tricks of the books. Luca may had done well if it was released a couple of years back, but again, we are not in the past anymote

  • @justafan5179

Depends what you consider mid... Elemental is probably the most wholesome, genuine, heartfelt film Pixar's ever produced. It tells an emotionally-driven story instead of the typical physically-driven plot... and delivers a core message of "make connections" to your community, family, and inner-self... even if they're your polar opposite, spiritually... so well. You can feel Pixar's soul in this. It's not perfect... but it's far better than any sequel or adaptation getting put out. I can't recommend it for kids under 8... or for people who only want life-altering masterpieces... but it's over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes... so that should tell you all you need to know, from anyone willing to give it a chance. Take care my friend, I hope you enjoy it!

Yeah, the beginning is gut wrenching and it's nice to see Carl finally let go of his old life to begin anew...but I remember nothing between those two points and the ending past that is hazy. And whenever you ask someone about the movie, it's basically the same. And no one ever even says it's their favorite, and I think it'd due to that fact. But anyways, favorite Pixar movie for me is Coco. The ending didn't affect me as much as my friends who went to see it with me (I didn't get grandparents growing up), but Miguel's story I understood and connected with so hard. New Pixar movies aren't as impactful, unique, and innovative as old ones. Majority of people would agree that old Pixar films are so much better than new ones. The problem with new Pixar films is that they are lazy. It's the same heartwarming message over and over again. It's the same rainbows and sunshine endings. And it's the same Disney animation style getting more realistic. The thing is, it feels repetitive. Sure the movie is entertaining, but it's not an guarantee masterpiece that will inspire millions of generations. Financially Pixar is doing bad. And laying off thousands of animators is bad. Compare that to Sony Animations with Across the Spiderverse and Dreamworks Puss in Boots, they're starting to create something new. ATM I hope Pixar doesn't die, especially with Elemental and other Pixar movies flopping. Pixar needs a revival.

I kinda agree with obstacle 4. But for me, it is not so much as looking basic but of how forced everything seems to be. While the Pixar films have their supernatural or unnatural elements to them. They are well incorporated into the whole. The characters, the themes, the setting, etc. everything coming together. This comes off as creative. I mean, they have to be that if they are going to fully incorporate such disparate things together. And this new take comes off as really fresh. That we are going to experience something new. Still, there are those that isn't well put together. I consider that with Bug's Life. The whole bug thing just isn't relevant or add much into the story in general. Then there was Cars. Just like with the bugs, the whole car things feels irrelevant. But at least, the story is about racing (except Cars 2) which does give some flimsy connection to cars at least. Then Brave with bears, Good Dinosaur with the dinosaurs, Onward with all the fantasy stuff, and their sequels like Finding Dory and Monster University with the original setting. The fancy stuff doesn't seem to be all that relevant to the themes or the whole story; just eye candies. And that is how it feels like to me with their recent movies. Turning Red... what is the deal with the magic transformation stuff? Lightyear... how is this related to the Toy Story character? Or the whole Toy Story in general? Their films become more and more disjointed and gimmicky. And then this. Elemental. I don't mind the living elements premise but the story just don't seem to mesh well with the living elements premise at all. With Wall-E, which is a romance story too, we have the interesting characters with unique perspectives and unique situations. That added a whole dimension to the romance. But with Elemental the living elements premise just seems to be superficial decoration. And that is how it comes off to me. Elemental feels pretty much like a generic love story with living elements as its superficial gimmick. Not much different from a typical romance story for kids.

So i keep hearing how pixar was great at movies like Ratatouille, monsters inc, and toy story which like u and i are from a genration when we were kids. Now its been like 2 decades and basically generations who are growing up probabably enjoy those films but also from the 2010s and now the 2020s. My sibling who was born in 2010 grew up watching the films i watched like ratatouille, mosnters and toy story. But she reallt enjoys monsters university, incredibles 2 and toy story 4. Even turning red. Because were in a time where its changing with new directors telling new stories, sometimes yea theyre done at a time where they couldve had more work put into them but thats the movie industry at times.

I agree with you so much on what Elemental looks like. I love the concept, I love some love story, but the visuals and everything is just looked like inside out mixed with zootopia, yes. Also, Elio just look the same like any other pixar films. It's not wrong by any means, it's just it didn't make me interested. We need more unique animation style, doesn't have to be exactly like spiderverse, it just need to be different, and I know it's so hard to do that and it's risky too, but for me, that's what makes me interested. I even interested to watch ninja turtles even tho I never watch that as a kid.

It's sad to think they are, because on all accounts, Elemental sits right up there with the golden years of Pixar and animation (personally, it's one of my all time favorite films). As someone who saw it, said to myself 'this was really really good. Why's it getting so much hate?', then to quickly realise that it could've been due to other people 'not liking it as much as the old Pixar stuff'. I rewatched the old stuff, and if I'm being honest, Elemental fits right in with them. My point is that in modern film, it seems to me that audiences are so fixated on picking at stories and plot that they completely miss what they're meant to be; an escape! Elemental is an *excellent* escape. Personally, one of the movies I've found myself invested in the most. It encapsulates everything great about cinema; something people can't really seem to grasp. Moral of the story; turn your brain off and watch a movie! Have fun! 😅

I feel like this is representative of a larger issue in Hollywood: its changing identity. People don’t really know what modern commercial cinema is now. It used to be that going to the cinema to see a film, then buying a VoD if you wanted to keep it. It was a linear experience. Now if you wait long enough, you don’t have to. Now, most people prefer watching something at home, the forced-immersion isn’t there anymore. They can browse infinite libraries of films and TV, all competing for attention. Pixar are changing too, staff, opinions, human backgrounds, workflow. All this is growing pains. Pixar used to have a formula because the leadership team consistently knew the films people wanted to see. Now that formula has had to evolve because of the changing cultural and commercial landscape. The formula they had has dissolved under that change, so they’re going to have to build a new one.

On the one hand, I like that people are finally telling Pixar off for making mid projects and are demanding more from the entertainment. In the other hand, I hate that the backlash is coming now when Pixar finally stopped riding it's own coattails and is telling original stories again, original stories that are really good and doing well with audiences in general. Soul, Luca and Turning Red are some if the best movies they've made in like a decade (Lightyear was trash, Onward was boring and I haven't seen Elemental so I can't tell whete it stands). That's a pretty solid track record right there. I would much rather these movies over more boring, worthless sequels.

Also there's no more hand-drawn animation movies. Disney makes so many CGI animated movies through Pixar and even its own original franchise, it's like...what's the point? Part of the reason Pixar's first half felt special was because Disney was still making hand-drawn movies at the time which brought balance to Pixar's CGI movies which made Pixar's movies feel special. But now with hits like "Frozen," "Big Hero Six," "Moana," "Encanto," and "Tangled," again it's like "What's the point now? If all movies are going to be 3D CGI, and Disney can actually make good 3D CGI movies without needing the Pixar logo, then what good are they?" Marvel's cinematic universe has a similar problem. When it first began with X-Men and Spider-Man movies, they felt special, fresh, and all, because they were a kind of treat. But now with Disney and Marvel making several Marvel movies a year, they just don't feel special anymore. One way Pixar COULD save itself....is to just abandon CGI, go into hand-drawn movies, and make them their own. Kinda like the nWo did in WCW by reintroducing black and white television. Something that was a new concept featuring superstars of yesteryear like Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash brought back something old-fashioned, yet made it feel fresh again, and that's why it worked. In fact, when the nWo started bringing in younger talent, went to color television, and started making branches of nWo, that's when it started to fade. It was just another faction that didn't really have its own thing anymore, so what was the point in it? Pixar bringing back something old and something many fans miss and making it their own could save it! Like, "Fine. You wanna do CGI now, Disney? Then let's try our hands at hand-drawn! We know lots of fans want that to come back, so let's give them what they want! Let's make the first ever hand-drawn Pixar movie and see if we can get some results!"

Don’t overuse Toy Story franchise. Now hearing Toy Story 5 I am extremely worried about the state of the studio. I have zero expectations but will still watch cause of my nostalgia of classic Pixar. Pixar suffers from a few things…creative incest (house style), creative bloat (hungry artists make masterpieces vs well fed artists make product), changing landscapes (audience apathy, armchair film economists rooting for doom, lack of scarcity, the rise of politics as sport/entertainment/ a new religion, the Disney+ ghetto jail). What I’m saying is, Pixar should have made a Spider-Man into the spider verse…something vibrant and crazy, loud and beautiful…but they didn’t because they want to make stories about being immigrants in a new city…something that doesn’t put butts in seats…Pixar’s fate might be sealed (further assimilation into the Disney machine), but that doesn’t mean we should stop expecting brilliance…think of it like this…the films job is to excite, entertain AND inspire the next generation of young people to make their stories…if you can’t get people excited, you’ve blown those opportunities…and any chance of making money.

I think they have to go back to making only 1 movie in 3 years. Because releasing a movie or two in one year makes people bored and not looking forward to anything. Plus they will put all their efforts, resources and minds into one thing. I think it goes the same with other studios and even video games. The companies have become soo greedy they want to make a release after a release for the money. With a disregard to the quality and meaning to what they actually produce even if it’s gonna be less. It’s money, investments, and targets is what’s ruining everything seriously. As a person, being bombarded with all this, new series, films, games, every other month makes me exhausted and i stopped watching anything ( well except for youtube obviously). And some Ghibli movies which are from another parallel universe
