best 11 min I've spent on yt in a while 🙌🏼 thanks J
the chordal glide technique via using all the polyphony sounds great

something truly unique to Sequential instruments
Wonderful! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing these tips Julian, the pitch bend set to a perfect fifth for chordal extensions is genius! Love it!

I actually started doing that mainly because Sequential synths' default patches are always set to a P5!
This was great. I know I'll watch this one again and again. Keep em' coming👌👌
Clear... as usual! Straight to the point... as usual! Usefull... as usual! THX a lot! 🖖
Thanks for all you do J3PO!
Dude, I don't even play the synth but your content is amazing, I could watch this all day. Great stuff!
Pure gold - thanks for sharing!
What an awesome master class. I’m a big fan and really dig this technique. Thanks so much for sharing.
Just stumbled upon this video. Great job. Subscribing now!
That was great, thanks. Please keep those technique n' tips vids coming!
awesome video! i haven’t found a lot of good explanations about how to “play synth” (as you rightly put it) but this was definitely one of them… please keep them coming, it’s very inspiring for beginners like me
More videos like this please!
eternally grateful for this video!!
This is super inspiring. I'm going to try the pitch bend to a perfect fifth as I now see that is a big part of his technique I love but never was really grasping what was going on. I'm going to practice these. Even volume to mod wheel isn't something I've ever assigned but I use a volume pedal with guitar and hearing the results is very expressive
Interesting topic, first time I see a video about pitch bend and mod wheel
This was awesome! More!!!
Hi Julian Tysm for sharing your knowledge
This was super informative! Thank you!
Thanks for sharing, really valuable as always. 🙏🏽
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! The index finger/thumb thing is something i hadn't stumbled upon. One more useful thing to try to get control of. Thanks again!
Great stuff. As others have said a synth technique series would be brilliant
The boy is back! I’ll try out 2 fingers on on the wheels, pretty interesting. Usually only resort to 2 fingers with the buttons on the odyssey
Mad talent here, bro!
Thank you for an awesome video! Great tips! 🙌
The glide sauce patch is what got me into watching your stuff ! Hope you make more of these style videos ! And I have a rev2 on the way haha😂
Great stuff!
Great video.
Thank you so much !! love your musicality !
Amazing tutorial 😍
Excellent video, and great advice Julian! 🙂 For about 30 years I've used to be using my left middle finger on the pitch wheel and index finger on the modulation wheel. That came from the Korg Wavestation and Kurzweil K2000. 🤔 However, I started my keyboard adventure in my early teens (1989?) on the Roland D10 with the pitch/mod joystick, and I really liked the joystick for a funky vibrato. My current Fantom 8 has both: the joystick and the pitch/mod wheels. Anyway, the most important thing is expressive control of the sound, and how you achieve it is a matter of taste and practice. 😎
This is so awesome. Thank you so much for your videos!
I've just realized your surname is Pollack, just like my all-time favorite film director. :)
This is excellent
man this is such a great video
That was frikin useful - thank you man! ☕
Great !
Such great pointers as always J3PO. I'm going to have to try that pointer and thumb more now. Love that patch on the Rev2. Like you said there is endless potential. I chatted with Sequential recently asking about finally allowing the vintage mode on the Rev2 like the rest of their synths, especially given the huge new price hike. They responded almost as if it was the first time someone had asked. Maybe you, if you haven't already, could also get the word to them on how powerful that software added feature could be especially on a 16 voice DCO synth. I'm just hoping them moving to Focusrite didn't kill the updates, features, and support for the Rev2.

Thanks! I too, hope that the slop knob will be updated to the current "vintage knob" on the other Sequential/Oberheim synths. The vintage knob is a great design that opens up the sound tremendously with those instruments. The "Osc Slop" knob is a bit too heavy handed. I never dial it in more than 10%. In my pack for the Rev 2, I utilized some of the Jason Cooper (Creative Spiral) VCM technique to create some of the patches. A knob to simulate some of that would be very welcome! :)
FYI - the latest Minimoog Model D re-issue now features a spring-loaded pitch wheel that returns to center upon release.

Yes I put that as asterisk text in the video when I said that 😂 I had already filmed the video before they announced the new reissue.

@@j3po784 Which would you prefer on the Mini, the new spring loaded pitch wheel or the original design?
@j3po784
Жыл бұрын
@@smokey5100 I like both. I may prefer the non-spring-loaded pitch wheel just because it makes me play differently than on other synths. More variation the better. It would be great if the new Mini had a "lock" and "unlock" button so you could have both. I know the Novation SL MKII MIDI controller has such a device, and that's just a MIDI controller.

@@j3po784 I came across your video and thought is it you? The one who makes patches for a certain vst synth? J3PO
That's new technique to me, also minimoog pitch bend looks smooth... like we don't need to hold the wheel from centering back...
Thats very creative and thanks for sharing! What are your thoughts about the note priority modes? I try to enable low note in my playing since thats the default ”mini” setting (I have the 2016 reissue) but I find it hard since I'm so used to last note.
6:09 cool
Hi Julian, I'm surprised to hear that the REV2 is one of your favorite modern poly. I've been trying to decide what poly to buy, and the impression I get from reading about Sequential/Dave Smith polys are a common, almost universal, distaste for the Curtis filter in the REV2. Nonetheless, I've been so impressed by REV2 demos that I ordered one a few days ago. I think it sounds amazing.

The Rev2 is my favorite modern poly because I think it's the best all-rounder, especially for the price and portability. While the filter in the Rev2 may not be as "lush" as the Prophet 6, OB-6, Prophet 5, or Ladder-style filter, all the extended modulation, 2 panels, and 16 voices make it an incredibly expressive instrument, possibly more expressive than the other analog giants. For those who just want a simpler more immediate experience with an analog synth, going with a Prophet 6 or something similar would be my recommendation. As an experienced sound designer, all I can say is that each instrument has a unique voice. Rating which one is "better" becomes meaningless after a while, especially if you know how to create your own sounds.
😍🔥
❤
Anyone know if this is possible on the Prophet 5/10 rev 4? Or is an expression pedal is needed?
my deepmind 12 can't do glide chord😭even in poly-6 mode. the 7th note always cut the first note even if I hold it(instead of cutting the notes in my right hand which not being held but keep ringing by my sustain pedal)
How do you find the ergonomics of the wheels placement? Do you prefer one or the other? Seems like on the left you can rest your hand more than when its above the keys where especialy large hands have to hover
great vid. I have a question, nowadays there are so many keyboard (or midi controllers) with pitch and mod Touch Strips instead of Wheel, I wonder is there any method to play strip well. Do you have any suggestion?
@j3po784
Жыл бұрын
If you're talking about something like the Arturia Keystep 37...yes, you can still perform with this type of technique. I do it when I'm on the road and only have my key step to produce with in the hotel. Oddly enough, it also can result to some different interesting and expressive results. With the pitch bend set to 7 semitones you can "momentarily" tap those notes with the touch strip. This is something I've been experimenting a lot with some tracks on my new album. Moral of the story: all of these various physical devices can lead to different realms of expressivity.
what are the two keyboardists he mentions at 6:35?
Great video! So, do you like the Rev2 more than Prophet 6?
@j3po784
Жыл бұрын
The Rev 2 is capable of a lot more in terms of sound design. The P6 is more immediate and gooey sounding. I love them both. Kinda depends on the day, haha.
What is the intro/ outro song in this video? Im dying to know.

It's a song he showed on his Instagram, using the Omni "LoFi Voices" patch he made... But I also would love to know if this is a whole song and maybe where to get it!

yeah, it was just the track I made demoing my Omnisphere library. I'd love to put my commercially released tracks in these videos (I actually tried on this one) but then I always am finding myself in a copyright issue with myself, haha. It's just easier to have unreleased music. However, the intro/outro is the sketch for an idea that's on the upcoming album, which will be released in the Spring of 2023.
The Nord pitch and modulation controllers are and utterly abysmal design!
It is so cringe when "musicians" say vibrato as "vibebrato" it is an Italian word. No long i sound. It is Vi-brah-toe. Vi like in Vivian.
