I read a book called Expedition Whydah. It was an amazing read. I'd encourage anyone with an interest in pirate lore, adventure, or even history to read it. Makes me want to see the museum.

I got to see this when it was at the cinncinati zoo. The first thing they show after the opening movie was the ships bell. I tell ya. that was the most awe inspiring moment. In sheer blackness, a single blue glow came to be and in the middle was that ell. I loved it.

k6yardotcom aka k6yarfilms well to be fair Nassau used to be a pirate haven, north or south carolina was becoming one from Blackbeard gaining favor with the governor, Louisiana was becoming one with jean laffite owning and operating a bar there, there were a few places in the south china seas that were notorious haunts like singapore, but other than that not likely that is more or less some black lagoon stuff with an island of pirates, smugglers, cartels, and other syndicates whom named it Roanapur

It is also available on audiobook read by Barry, which is really good. He has two other AMAZING books: RETURN TO TREASURE ISLAND which is the true Indiana-Jones-ish story of his discovery of five famous pirate ships in Madagascar, and THE LOST FLEET which tells shocking history about his discovery of the French Fleet that was wrecked at Las Avis near Aruba in the last battle of the Buccaneers before the start of the Golden Age of Piracy. I also HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the book MASTER OF THE SWEET TRADE which is the extremely accurate historic novel about Sam Bellamy & the Whydah by Elizabeth Moison who worked very carefully with Barry Clifford's late Expedition Whydah historian Ken Kinkor (whom I succeeded, but could never replace).

Because the people on that ship when it went down were all free men. There wasn't any slaves on board. When the pirates took the shop from the slavers, they freed everyone. Seeing the artifacts was sad because of how many people died on that ship.

I was questioning the same thing. However, i would make sense that he gave the looted treasure to museums or some historical facilities since National Geographic's documenting this event. Well depends how far he went to find it, If it's a certain distances away from the shore than he'll be able to claim ownership. Otherwise it's property of the country's.

Who owns this found treasure? What if someone else encroaches on this guy's find? Is this man an archaeologist funded by some public entity or is he privately engaged in this discovery? Did he have to give up the 'loot' to museums, or did he do that to preserve the history of the treasure and hopefully piece together things about the Whydah?

@roxas666777 Well, you need two eyes to provide your brain with enough information to triangulate Distances for you. With only one eye, you loode what is neccessary to seize the lines, to fight with a sword, or pistol etc. The Benefit would occur so incredibly rarely, that you simply overwhelmingly outweigth the "benefits". The reason why Pirates, as Seamen in general, wore Eyepatches more frequently than other Folks, is that some of the early Instruments for the Navigation required you

They make this quest for this pirate ship to be romantic. However, it is not a pirate ship, the ship Whydah is a slave ship named after the people enslaved name the Whydahs in the city of Whydah which was later turned into a major slave port in W. Africa. Whydah is the decrepit name for Judah. So this particular people in W. Africa were authentic Jews different from the other African people who are now in the Americas. The ship whydah docked in Georgia in the 1700s. I have many 16th/17th century books that reference this but people don't wanta know the truth written by their own historians

You are out of your mind. FIRST of all, the Kingdom of Whydah was NOT Jewish in ANY SENSE of the term - it had over two dozen spellings of the name (based on the FOREIGN pronunciation and spelling), such as Xweda, Whidah, Glexwe, Ajuda, and Juidah (which did NOT mean the Hebrew Judah!), and it's official local spelling is Ouidah! The kingdom of Whydah, ruled by the warrior king Haffon, was named for the Whydah Bird of Paradise, and the word itself is from the African Wolof dialect and means in essence GOOD LUCK. So you can bury your crackpot theory. SECONDLY, the Whydah Gally was a CARGO ship captained by Lawrence Prince; AMONG the cargo was about 360 African sold to him by King Haffon to sell in the Caribbean. The ship was captured by the pirate Samuel Bellamy and his crew who opposed slavery as a crime against humanity, and a full 1/3rd of Bellamy's crew of 180 men were AFRICANS - including their ELECTED quartermaster Hendrick Quintor! These pirates declared independence against the monarchies and lived by a strict Constitutional Republic government in which all members were absolutely equal. The Whydah might have carried slaves on its maiden voyage, but it became a ship of freedom AND MUST BE CELEBRATED AS SUCH!!!

To clear things up, the Whydah was indeed a slave ship however it was captured by Black Sam Bellamy. Additionally, in my opinion Black Sam is the most romantic real pirate. He was actually something of a revolutionary who strongly believed in democracy even when he disagreed with its results. www.goldenageofpiracy.org/infamous-pirates/samuel-bellamy.php
