Pipers of the Trenches

BBC Scotland Documentary. Looking at the role of the Pipers who served in the Highland Divisions of the British Army during the First World War. We also see the descendants of former Piping ‘heroes’including Victoria Cross recipient Daniel Logan Laidlaw (26 July 1875 - 2 June 1950} visiting the scenes of Battle. Also featured is cutting edge audio technology recreating the sound of the Battle of the Somme interlaced with Pipes. We will remember them.

It's nice to see a young person interested in ancestry and 'old' things, especially her granddad's.

Lest we forget! They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Here's to the men of the Scottish Division From the time the world began. And here's to the Pipes and Drums as they march Each man to serve his Clan. Remember the Seaforths, the Camerons, the Argylls, The Black Watch, the Gordons with their cocky wee smiles, The Cameronians, The Royal Scots and the KOSB, The HLI, the Greys and the Bold Fusilier with a glint in his eee'. Think of their honours, in battles they have won, Think of the fathers, the brothers, the sons, Think of the scars that we cannot see, And the lands far away, that they have set free. Now Honour these men from the present to the past, With great pride in your heart and thoughts that will last.WRITTEN BY MYSELF IN ORDER TO REMEMBER OUR SOLDIERS.JBR JOCK.

My grandfather Angus Stanley Wallace was in the Seaforth Highlanders during WW1 & told me about his experiences once or twice when I was younger . This is a poem I wrote after going to the ' the field of flanders' museum in Belgium in 2004. 'The Trenches' Through the acrid smoke, the mud & the smell of death, the trenches, oh to be in England that green & pleasant land, sipping a cool beer by the green hills, the sea, the birdsong & the blue skies, with your love, here there is no sweet sound of natures fanfare, only the noise of gunfire & pain, this was once a green field now it's a grey muddy wasteland of living hell, why are we here, they said it would be over by christmas, explosions ringing in my ears, then a deathly silence all around & darkness, at peace now. written by Andrew Williams in feb '09.

That's the best ending to any documentary I have ever seen. Best place to put the pipes being played as I know I wouldn't have been able to see anything afterwards with blurry eyes. I hope people never forget the sacrifice made by so many in the First world war. 100yrs ago now and those men are all gone. It is now passed on to us to ensure there memory lives on. We must do a tremendous job of it, we can not let it be for nothing.

I am American. (33 yr old woman).... Both my grandfathers were veterans and I have a close friend who fought in infantry Irag. ..... Whenever I watch War documentaries where it is on the Americans I see in the comment section nothing but arguing, complaining, foul language, ignorant and immaturely baseless claims to outrageous opinions.... Seeing the comments under this and of all you among your fellow Scottish people is 1- shameful for me to see and hurtful because I wish America could do better and 2- respect for all of you

I had heard it said that because of both the morale they raised in Scots and the fear they struck in the English, the pipes were considered weapons of war, and thus the pipers were still considered armed. The bravest of warriors.
