When my dear sweet 98 year old dad was passing i played this song for him . My head was on his heart as he took his last breath. He wasn't afraid of dying, he just loved living. ❤

Play this at my funeral, one of the most beautiful songs!

Actually we had this particular song at the funeral of our brother, who died in an awful car accident. We will never forget this song, it was so well choosen as he had always been a big fan of Dire Straits, right from the beginning.

The song is about Knopfler's uncle Freddie ( mother side : Frederick John Laidler ) who was a piper of the 1st Battalion, Tyneside Scottish, the Black Watch, Royal Highland Regiment. Freddie carried his pipes into action in World War II and was killed with fellow fighters at Ficheux, near Arras in the north of France in May 1940. He was just 20 years old. Knopfler describes the moment of Freddie's death in the latter's own words: This has been a day to die on Now the day is almost done Here the pipes will lay beside me Silent with the battle drum

All of his compositions are fantastic, but this is one you really have to work hard to hold in the tears, but once they start it's harder to stop

A piper friend of ours recently died and had his funeral with this music playing. Beautiful.

Would that I could give Mark and his band 1,000 thumbs up! Humbled by this beauty.

Mark has to be one of the most inspired songwriters ever. His lyrics are so amazing...

This is and has been the place I retreat to, friends from 30+ years of dear friends. Most have passed in life, but my mind still sees them next to me...they welcomed me into their lives and family. Beautiful friends, old white guy from Austin, TX. I am lost sometimes, but thankful.

Damn, I envy that crowd. They have witnessed Mark producing something magical from his guitar. Such worldclass playing!

Lovely to hear that you have such a strong emotional attachment with Scotland. I must admit that we Scots love a sad song - we can be great fun, but also great sadness as well. I think it may have to do with our past history, but it is inbuilt into us. However it does mean that we can and have produced some great, emotional songs - Gerry Rafferty “ Baker Street” , Rabbie Burns “ Auld Lang Syne”, Blue “ I wish I could fly “ amongst many others. I am a big Knopfler fan, but this is by far my favorite song

One of my ancestors was english and scottish and i love great britain!!!even more than my country probably because a piece of my heart stay here....

Can't help but shed tears when listening to this song especially in times of grief or reflection. God bless this man and many thanks to him for sharing his beautiful and masterful talents with the world.

Beautiful song, and what a consummate musician/pro that Mark is. He has no problem sharing the stage with other players, and he has no problem backing them up like he's doing here. He doesn't overplay like others, and maintains/controls his volume just right to complement the song and his band. It's easier said than done. A pro's pro.

Saw him in October at Sony theatre in Toronto..! He did not disappoint..! Three encores... later, everyone was happy..!
