I worked with Michael and Detek’s parents, Chico Ho (at the Royal Hawaiian) and Joeen Ho (at the Sheraton Waikiki) at Harry Robello’s Aloha Beach Services throughout the 70s and 80s. Knew their sisters as well, Debbie, Mary Ann and Kumomi. Good solid family…🤙🏽

Dam look at the size of the boards compared to 2022 n too bad I was born in 86 and not old enough to remember the golden days of surfing

Did they just never consider using a smaller board? Honestly looks like they can get way deeper on those bigger boards much easier

Potts did really well but he was up for some serious competition

Definitely not 1985. The final was Occy, Ronnie Burns, Max Medeiros, Mickey Nielsen, Mike Ho and Rabbit. I was there and will never forget Biggest Pipe Master ever by a large margin...

Its funny how the guy talks about what a disadvantage surfing Pipe is on your backhand. Now it all backhanders who dominate the event.

Derrick's level of talent was absolutely flawless at pipeline, by this year, and his boards were far superior to his competition's boards. Curren's board was the worst. This was when curren still didn't know how to backside tuberose, and Al still didn't know how to make a board on that level for the north shore, especially for pipeline, yet. I'd say of all the "Mister Pipeline" titled surfers, Derrick is the best, for flawless classic hawaiian style, and depth and length of tube rides.
