Pioneer SX 1050 Repair and Restore

This Receiver was already partially restored. Here, we finish replacing capacitors, replace the speaker switch, repair and restore the cabinet and finish all the repair issues with the preamp and tuner. It was a lot of work, but the receiver turned out beautiful. Enjoy!

That right there, is Beautiful ! And well done ! Your patience has really paid off. I'm starting work on an SX-737 very soon thats just not sounding great anymore. I think I'll begin with cleaning all controls, and then go from there one section at a time. It's going to take a while. Thanks for the great explanations !

I found this model setting on top of a bag of trash on the curb several years ago. Never forget how heavy it was. About 52 lbs., I believe. It was cosmetically excellent and played well when I first found it, but now, needs a complete restoration. Think I'll be working on a 1972, Pioneer SX 626 (also found in e-waste) before I even think about looking into this SX 1050 monster. Thanks for this fascinating video.

Could you please advise me of what type of 10 amp fuse to purchase for this model?

Dam to have just anyone of the amps I had during the years oh how happy I'd be, just played most of em into the ground, but it was so easy to replace with another one, usually more amps per cnl. Always able to play speakers a+b

I'm an electronics tech, and you still had my head swimming when doing the tuner adjustments. I've just never been in this line of work. Most of my experience is with OCR and digital signals.

I have this same Pioneer receiver. I also have an old Fisher receiver. What do you charge for a complete rebuild? Located in Northern Cal. I would appreciate anything you could assist me with.

Nice video, working on a Pioneer SX-1000TW currently. Just brought back the audio after a complete recap of power supply and rework of main power amp board. Preformed bias of outputs after symmetry adjust of push pull driver stage as well. The audio sounds fantastic. However I’m experiencing AM and FM tuner issues. The AM tuner has a shrill noise in it and appears dead. The FM tuner works but the audio is approx 1/4 the level of using another aux audio input source. The tuner has a max tuner panel gauge that when FM is tuned to max signal, audio disappears, half scale brings it back to best audio output and clarity. Unfortunately I don’t own nice tuner injection alignment equipment as you do. I do have a dual trace 100 meg scope, function generator and a signal tracer injector box with RF/Audio mode switch, as well as a vintage analog RF generator as well as a vintage sweep marker generator for old tv tuner alignment. However I have never needed to do a tuner alignment before. Therefore never learned how. However none of my Archaic equipment has db level set points and other precision controls as your tester does. I’m thinking of probing the audio output of IF board into the multiplexer board, and multiplexer board output to see if audio level is being lost in it. I’m hoping I can find a fault issue that is common to both tuners, or at least the FM section. I will be checking tuner boards +B voltages and the like. Hopefully I can at least get the FM section working nicely for my customer. I just wish I had the knowledge and equipment you have for dealing with tuners. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wish I knew somebody like you here to look at my 1050. With the TONE switch ON, my left channel has a distortion that sounds like the wind outside can make on a microphone.

( Cont'd ) you have totally disrespected this receiver . The owner needs to speak up and have you do this properly if you are going to do it it's deserves to be done CORRECTLY! You are a damn good technician but this is UNACCEPTABLE...

I have watched many of your restorations and have been very impressed until I have watched this one. My question is with such a valuable rare sought after receiver why in the world would you take out the metal transformer frame and just paint over the rust ???? Dude this almost made me sick to my stomach .. Why didn't you just wire wheel it back to it's original metal condition and leave it as rust free original without the paint? It can clearly be seen where you have just sprayed it black instead of removing the rust , and sprayed right over the top of it!!

Soft start circuits are essential for any DIY Power Amp projects. Basically its just a time-delay (capacitor based) relay driver circuit. You can find some on e-bay but they don't use very robust relays.
