You had me worried you weren't going to lube up the mechanism. This was a project for me 10+ years ago. Now I'm wanting to do a recap but I'm not a sodering guy but willing to try. Good video.

I would recommend use rubber gloves for ESD safety purpose and unit parts cleaning .

Had one of these RT-909 decks that had a bad motor, and a Technics RS-1506 US. I kept the 1506 because of the 15 IPS speed, but it doesn't handle small tapes gently, no small reel switch to reduce the torque. Should have kept the 909, but I do have a RT-707 and a RT-701 which still have speed regulation problems even after recapping the motor servo board. May be more caps in the power supply somewhere that need to go.

Trailhiker , do you hear anything in play, Hiss, noise ? Also when you send a signal into the deck can you hear that when the deck is in the source mode with the record levels turned up?

@@luvradiosI'm bench testing now so I'm using head phones for listening but I have no hiss in play and got my source levels on max. Even when I turn on switches to record the red light does not come on anymore

Trailhiker , it seems you have a total loss of audio, I would look at the power supply voltages in the pb/rec amp section, make sure you don’t have a loose connection or something simple like that. The service manual should be available at HiFiEngine.com

I don't do bulk recaps, if they are truly bad I will change them, there are some exceptions of course but bulk cap replacement isn't something I normally do.

@@luvradios Is there a reason other than very time consuming and expensive to your customer? I just have read mixed consensus on this and just would like to know your reasoning. If it was your 909 would you do it just for longevity and possible performance? I mean I understand if your providing a customer a service like this one that they likely just want it to work.

Time & Expense are biggies for sure but age doesn't necessarily make all capacitors bad and if a R2R deck (or any other unit) is working as it should I don't change anything that isn't currently bad or known to be an issue , if we're going to change every cap due to age then why stop there? All the transistors are the same age so why not change those and all the IC's too. I'm not saying its not a good practice its just not my thing. As for my own equipment? I address problems as they come for the most part with exceptions given to known intermittent/stressed part failures or mechanical issues.

@@luvradios well like mine it functions pretty much as it should but the recording I believe deteriorates or level seems to go down in level the longer it records. I will start recording and set the level and before the side of the record finishes it has dropped a couple level say from +5 to +3. Figured the capacitors on the audio path board could be the culprit.

Well that problem should be an easy fix, make sure you don’t have a cold solder joint on the heater lines of the Display tube, if not trace those lines back to the power supply and see if you have an open resistor on the line or a break.
