Pioneer PL300 Turntable repair and service

Repairing a couple of mechanical issues with this direct drive turntable, and looking at how it works. Its been 15 years since I did repair work full time, so I am a bit rusty, which is why it took me so long to get this fixed.

Hi Steve. I have fixed several of these Pioneers. All of them the motor cogged without the platter. You neglected to notice that the springs are in fact colour coded and that the spring which is a different colour to the other three must be placed on the front left foot. The hanging suspension is actually very clever though as with most 70/80s decks it was over-damped by the rubber collars. Conversely when rotted as is here it will be under damped i.e. the suspension will bottom out. New collars and judicious use of a hole punch or slits in the collars can transform the performance of these turntables. All the best Nenad.

Thank you Steve! I have today carried out that same repair to my old PL300x and found the two metal plates to be sticky. Works perfectly now. However... I cannot believe you didn't realise the platter had to be n place to allow the speed sensor to run the motor correctly!! ;)

Good to hear you got yours going. This would be one of the first direct drive turntables I have worked on. I have never come across a motor that wouldnt run without a load before. Back when I was doing repairs for a living I probably would have realised a bit sooner. Wasting time chasing some quirk of the design is just part of the fun of fixing electronic devices.

I have a PL-400 and tried so hard to watch this. I cringed, but made it through the use of an impact driver to take it apart. When the impact came back out to put it back together I couldn’t take it anymore and had to stop. I’m sure it came out just fine. I just get queezy looking at this kind of thing the same way some people are affected by seeing blood.

It cost me $20 at a junk store. I am from an era where we just fixed stuff as quickly as possible, not treated it like some fragile precision little treasure like modern audiophiles do. I cringe when I see people treating playing a record like they are performing a surgical procedure. Its just a piece of mass produced consumer goods that was obsolete long ago. I worked on this stuff for years so know how its built. If you knew how the average owner of this stuff treated it back in the day after they purchased it new, you would faint for sure.

@@StevesElectronicRepairShop I hear ya man. It was less about the impact on the turntable and more about using it in general on old plastic parts. Like I said, I’m sure it came out fine. Its not like you were hammering on it. It’s my issue not yours. I just see so many people these days using impacts where they don’t need to stripping screws left and right.

@@seanhilliard7995 The Japanese used good plastic. Certainly some things are very brittle these days and even screwing them by hand can break them. Also impact drills can be used gently like normal drills, they have a variable trigger that gets more aggressive as you pull it in further. I wasnt pulling it in far enough to insert a 100mm bugle screw into hardwood. Just feathering it to undo small screws.

Yes they are a nice unit. Built around the peak of Japanese electronic goods in terms of quality, and the peak of technology put into turntables before they became obsolete as a mainstream consumer good.

this table can be serviced in about 30 mins if the tech has experience with the design and layout. the suspension relies on a set of 4 rubber feet and is most often the cause of sag and lack of proper operation. the microswitch, speed selector switch and the potentiometer need cleaning..... clean a couple of times to prevent having to re-enter the table. for what it is - not a bad turntable.

Where? It is made in Japan so not fragile. You could drive a truck over the motor so are unlikely to damage the bearing.

If it hasnt been used for a long time it may be sticky grease, or something to do with the auto return mechanism.

I have a pl 200 and the lift mechanism doesn't function properly. When I set the set screw to have it raise up, then it doesn't go done when lever is placed in down position. If I set the set screw to have to go down, then it does not lift when lift lever is placed in up positions. I'll have to take it apart like you've done here, but before I do, I want to ask you what type of grease is it you used in this video? You say "just regular grease", but what regular grease are you referring to exactly? There's many different types of grease. Thank you.

@@StevesElectronicRepairShop there are two little potentiometers accessible through the underside .......adjustable with a small straight screwdriver. They are white plastic with one marked with red located about 5 inches from the middle front....side by side about one inch apart. One sets the speed when at 45 rpm, the other when at 33 . I adjust both about 1/8th turn clockwise and speed stabilized. Prior to adjustment, lights stayed constant but would flicker every 20 seconds or so. After adjustment, speed remained constant and the flicker went away. Posting this to help others as I spent several hours trying to find how and where to make this adjustment and stopped my random slow downs.

What kind of service engineer are you, as if trying to run it without the platter was bad enough (your lucky you did not damage the driver IC), But greasing the main bearing? If you had none your research before taking you horrible screwdriver to it (which you clearly didn't) you would have known that those clever engineers at pioneer designed oil free bearings for this series of decks. please tell us our Ebay name, so those of us with any sense know not to buy anything from you.
