​@12voltvids I read that part of it was small bands/artists who still wanted physical media prefer tapes over CD's due to the costs being much better in small batches. The other half are hipsters 😐

I have a few sitting here to look at some time.

A good old beast, the rec/play mode switch was no supprise, ive never had one that didnt need a clean. The tape counter and hall effect device reminds me of the old piano key vhs machines.

Picked up a Pioneer CT-F8282 from Goodwill for about 10 bucks a year ago (the Pioneer CT-F8282 and the Pioneer CT-F8080 share the same Service Manual). Replaced the belts and cleaned it up, but the wow and flutter was terrible, so I put it away. After seeing your video and realizing that the models were similar, I pulled it out of storage to do some additional cleaning using your video as a guide. To my surprise the wow and flutter have now vanished, and the machine sounds great. However I still have some more contact cleaning to do, because the left channel has no output. I am hoping that is the only issue with this beast. By the way, my machine came with the wood case cabinet enclosure (the deck is cosmetically in good shape).

Thank you for another informative video! You sure get some odd comments here however.... Personally, I find your channel one of the very best in diagnosing and repairing these old electronics. Just recently did some re-soldering on a board that I would have never attempted without watching you. That I got the unit working again after was a major accomplishment for me - so many thanks for the help and confidence to tackle that job! 🥳

Somebody’s almost always going to whine about something. There’s a difference between serviced and restored. A lot of that is in the details like cleaning of both the interior of the component and the exterior as well. What was ordered or what was decided is key. Your customer specifies the level of service. You communicate what that level costs and they decide to just do basic service or a more intensive restoration. It’s up to the customer to decide. That’s how it’s done. It can get really involved depending on that. I do restoration based on it’s state of exterior and internal issues it has. Some gear comes in that looks like they’re growing cultures inside. Some gear comes in looks like you could eat off it. You get all kinds. Me, I give them the best for what I can do and what is spent. Nobody’s unhappy. It’s smilesville. That’s a gravy one.

Thanks Dave for another great video. My first cassette deck back in the day was a CT-F7272. I was about 12 years old.

Mine was a ctf500. I still have it. It outlived the friend i bought it off. He was an idiot that went out on his boat with our a lifejacket. He found out the hard way.

That is a beast of a tape deck. Wonder if any of the belts have been replaced since 1976. Sounds as good if not better than some of the later decks. I have a TDK head demagnetizer tape. Model HD-01.If you don't do any recordings, guess you will still have to demagnetize the head after a while. Thanks for showing us the deck.

I'm currently working on a ct-f9191 and the SM shows a motor speed adjustment pot but it doesn't exist on this one. @3khz it's 3.087k so all is good I suppose. I'd rather have a deck run slightly faster than slower which is much more noticeable. Good vid man

I like those old, heavy pieces of metal. There's something reassuring about it. Also, were those two daughterboards on the main PCB two discrete component dolby boards? Everything that doesn't use an IC is a plus in my book. Kinda like those Technics tapedecks of the same era as this deck. They were full of solenoids and discrete component dolby boards too. This Pioneer deck here Sir, is a very nice deck *salutes*.

I have an old Hitachi D-550 deck that needs all the belts replaced as they have all turned to mush. I may never figure out how to do it, but where do you get your replacement belts? most of these look like they should be round and a square one for the main motor drive.

Still don't believe u demagnitized the heads ......lol kidding ya your one of the better repair guys I seen i myself took electrical engineering course but never completed it I was in high school always loved to fix electronics

In 1979 I purchased a Pioneer CTF-1000. I see some similarities between that deck and this one.

I have an pioneer ct-4242 tape deck cassette that has an input problem...the output part of the jack works but when recording. I have to use the mic inputs in order to record sounds instead of the input jacks... there's also a switch back there that saids DIN/LINE on it and the switch doesn't work at all that could be responsible for the audio path...how can I fix it?

I have sony dvp-S7700 just received through the post at the start cd was not working then it started playing and same with vcd but dvd discs is still not working it says can not play this disc do you what causing the problem its a twin optical dis reader could you give me any adivce to fix it

You have any idea what could possibly be causing a 1982 RCA SelectaVision VCR to not eject when you press the button? When hitting the eject button for the VHS player you’ll can hear something spinning inside it just won’t eject the tray? Any tips would help.

The insides remind me of some old test equipment or the insides of an old telephone exchange. Lot of boards, it would cost a fortune to do that these days!

Are the VU meters OK? They seem to be loosie goosy.

Speaking of good ole Pioneer cassette decks. What do you think of the CT-F7171? You should do a series on odd various makes of vintage equipment you have serviced. Just a thought. Always interested in hearing opinions of people like you who have tons of experience first hand.

@32:17, my 1978 Sony TC-K71 manual says GOOD for 3 different patterns: O / and right leaning oval in between. Why does it state those 3 are good if the / is 'perfect'? there is turning range between the O and the /. I usually tune by ear for the crispest highs on a newer good commercial prerecorded tape. Not sure where the highest 'highs' compares to the pattern? I do have a scope and can get that pattern no problem on a 3Khz tone tape. Thanks

The / indicates in phase an O would be a 90' shift .

you are lucky that you are given such nice stuff for free. My only source for old tech is ebay and other auction sites. This stuff was not available here.

That's such a nice 44 year old pioneer stereo cassette deck machine,,,are the belts in it still original? Or replaced? I had a similar model come to me for repairs with sound troubles,,,same thing I had to do,,,put in contact cleaner lube on those record playback switches,,,,got the sound back as it should b,,,but the music speed was slow,,,I eventually found the speed control in the back of the motor,,,right in the centre,,,and readjusted it back to the right speed playing pre-recorded tapes. You need a very small non metallic screwdriver to adjust the speed control,,,inside the motor if u can't find it anywhere else in the machine. I guess that must b a very noisy fan heater u have going in the background too.

Old machines used mechanical govanor. Basically weights that spin out with centrifugal force to limit speed. All the old 8 track motors were limited that way. This was before the electronic speed control

@@12voltvids Ok,,,I guess u couldn't find a speed control in the back of the motor. As I had repaired a 44 year old pioneer stereo tape deck model back earlier,,,I had found the speed control in the centre of the motor,,,I thought for the pioneer model u had would b the same.

Other old portable tape recorders I've repaired in the past,,,did have that type of mechanical governor to balance the speed,,,I had worked out with motor apart,,,to adjust the speed a bit on 2 governor weights,,,to get the right tape playback speed,,,was a pain as u had to reassemble motor back into place first and check if speed is right.

I have a question to ask. I plan on working on a 1996 Magnavox crt. What I plan on doing is removing the whole circuit board, but I do not feel comfortable discharging the anode from the tube. Is possible I could just desolder the fly back transformer from the board without an issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Connect a ground wire from the ground strap on the back of the CRT. (Metal bracket that mounts the tube. Connect other end of that wire to a small flat head screwdriver. Slide the screwdriver up under the 2nd anode cap to touch the second anode button. The crt will discharge

@@jaredlaws8079 anode cap is easy to remove and clip on. The old Trinitron with the red resistor with the h static control was a little tricky to remove but standard ones no problem.

What a beast. BTW, you are pushing that poor white LED a 'bit' hard. 24V DC supply, 3.5V drop on the LED, 470R makes it cca.40mA, which is about double its rating, and nearly 1W dissipation on the 1/4W resistor. Something's not right because the resistor and the heat shrink on it should be smoking, there might be an other series dropping resistor somewhere in the circuit for the original bulb. Should have measured the voltage on a working original bulb as well. Or is it a double series chip white LED? I haven't seen one in through hole package, but quite common in SMD.

The incandescent bulbs are 12 volt so there is a dropping resistor in there.

@@12voltvids That's a strange design choice from Pioneer. They dissipate half the power on a dropping resistor, while they could have used 24V bulbs instead... Or 28...36V ones on 24V, and they would last forever with a nice warm glow. But you were lucky on Friday 13th because they've done it like that 44 years ago :-) .

@@12voltvids After 14:26 the sensor pulley slows down and runs unevenly for a while. The counter might still be a bit sticky at some points, eg. when it turns the first digit.

@@mrnmrn1 no it is fine now. I put a drop of oil on the counter shaft. Couldn't show it as my head was in the shot.

Please for goodness sake stop using US standard measurements. Use kilos, not pounds. You're a canadian, not american. Stop using pounds! Stop pandering to the yanks. The world is effing kilos, not US Standard measurements!
