I bought some of these exact bags from Amazon (except in the half gallon size). Never did this before so should be fun. All my beans and rice are in the freezer now to kill any bugs. Was going to put 2-100cc absorbers into them. It's just me and my husband so I figured 1/2 gallon would be big enough. These seem to be very nice bags. I'm going to try sealing mine with a hair straightener that has a digital display of the temperature. I've seen these used often and they tend to be a lot easier than a standard iron.

Hello. Thought I would let you know the oxygen absorbers will prevent any bugs from surviving and will prevent larva from hatching. In fact most of these bugs that live in grain and rice and survive freeze thaw cycles. If you look it up you will find this to be true. That's why using mylar bags and oxygen absorbers are so perfect. Easy, simple, and hits all the checkbooks for storing grains long term.

Some larger bags are good you will be using the food stores as time goes by and replacing with fresh stock. Not to mention the barter potential of having beans someone else may have dried veggies to swap or canned meats maybe food for ammo

Who else cringed when he did the second crimp on the first bag. I thought for sure it was folded over. I’m sure he knows better, but the wrinkles in the crimp sure make it seem unsealed.

I'm with you on that. To me , just my opinion:: I don't think that I would trust that (perfect) seal. And I vacuum seal all my stuff , mainly because I have to keep everything as small as I can.. My home is really small. Take care and stay safe.

Our family just started prepping. We chose the same bags you demoed on this informative video. Thanks for the tips. I've heard of people using foodgrade desiccant packs also, with the oxygen absorbers, just can't put them close to one another, you think those would help? What if you took another step and vacuum sealed your beans, rice, pasta, etc. in the plastic foodgrade bags and then added a oxygen absorber to it, sealed it, and then sealed that in a mylar bag?

If you look around on You Tube you will see that most people freeze their rice for a couple of days then another couple of days to get it back to room temperature. This kills the bugs and eggs. Then you can store it the same way as this video.

@@The_Healing_Facilitator Did you use O2 absorbers? If you did then any bugs won't hatch. The freezing is an added layer of protection and such a pain! I would say that at some point you could toss the mylar bag in the freezer for 3 days, then open it and let it come to room temperature and repackage it. I wouldn't stress about doing it now but if you buy more then do it and write on the bags that it was frozen first.

How long does it take for all of the air to get out of the bag with new oxygen absorbers? I sealed three or four big bags with plenty 1000cc oxygen absorbers (2-3), and a day and half later is still seems to have a decent amount of air in the bag.

Carlos G oxygen only makes up a certain percentage of the air. there will still be other gases in the bag but the absorbers will take care of the oxygen.

Hope you rotate your "beans" The good news.. beans are good for you..Bad news.. you'll find that about 5 years or so.. they wont cook up so good..they'll be rubbery in texture...Bummer right?.. Well you don't have to throw them out if you forgot to rotate or didn't get to them.. you can grind them up and make flour. Lots of things you can make with bean flour.. mix it with other grain flour!.
