Sweet memories of watching this around '95, '96 on the old Disney Channel....my mother made sure to tape it off of TV for me so I would have a copy of it on VHS. I wore the tape out! This story was magical. Sandy Duncan is my favorite version of "Pinocchio" and this is my favorite version of the classic Carlo Collodi story, even moreso than the Disney version, which was nice, but a bit too saccharine for me. This had some real emotion and poignancy to me, I think because of the beautiful performances of Danny Kaye and Sandy Duncan. I also liked that you knew from the outset that they were really father and daughter and this was all a production--the background story of their theater troupe I felt was just as interesting as the actual Pinocchio story. What a blast from the past! Thank you so much for sharing this piece of my childhood here. :)

Pinocchio 1976 tells a story about a mischievous and fun loving yet talkative and curious young female wooden marionette with red arms and legs, and a pair of cute eyelashes named Pinocchio (portrayed by a American principal boy Sandy Duncan) who dons white opera gloves and longs to be a real girl with a help from her adopted father; a kindhearted Italian woodcarver named Geppetto.

But when I rediscovered this not too long ago, I was surprised to learn that the star of the show was famous actress, Sandy Duncan. We don't see her much on tv anymore. She hasn't officially retired from acting. This is the second version of Pinocchio I saw, the first being the Disney version. And I remember the third version I saw after this was in an episode of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre, where Paul Ruebens played the role.

That's a darn good question, and I wish I knew the answer. By the way, the songs for this show were written by composer and lyricist Billy Barnes.

This show was not associated with Disney. It would've aired on ABC, NBC or CBS.
