If it's anything like the ones at my work, then there's a push button in the cab that raises and lowers them. Drivers are supposed to have them raised when making a turn. This is also assuming they aren't using steer lift axles.

Got ya. We only run tandems with one or two drop axles. They just leave them down when loaded. They are so far back I don't think it would matter.

On the newer trucks and trailers equipped with steer lift axles they are actually meant to be left down all the time when loaded. Steer lifts are also usually (but not always) equipped with super singles which further helps turning radius. On older ones however without the steering mechanism (especially where duals are used instead of super singles) the tire scrub is horrendous if the driver forgets or fails to raise it when they're supposed to. In cases like those I've seen tires get destroyed in a very short time period. Seen sets of tires get chewed all the way down to the cords couple times even.

Jamin Mayer They’ll have to lift up front 2(or 3, sometimes 4) trailer axles & 1 rear trailer axle when turning, after turning put it back down. If driver didnt lift axles up when turning, the trailer is like not turning but go straight instead(which caused jackknifing)

Well nice to see Canadian trout river makes a "Michigan serpentine trailer" so the drivers in Michigan can haul heavy too. Funny thing is we Canadians must not value our roads lol unlike the USA. ( yes I drove in USA and know the laws there) but in Michigan you need 8 trailer axles to gross 150k but in canada Ontario and Quebec we can haul 150k total with only a 5 legger . Hence why many Canadian roads and "ALL" Quebec paved roads have ruts in them lol. (All joking a side , in canada it not really since we use less axles we have ruts in paved roads, it has to do more with the climate we have of frost and mini warm spells then you get heaving and cracking) I remember the first time crossing the border at Windsor Detroit and going into Michigan and seeing one of these serpentine wagons and thought wow I wouldn't want the bill to change all them tires lol. America really doesn't allow "heavy haul" they claim if the load can be dismantled and stay at or under 80 k gross then 80 k it is.

The only time you really get to haul heavy is a few states and exceptions like heavy equipment for example that can't be further torn apart. Then you can haul heavy but there are major requirements and extra axles and or tag units on the front and back to disperse weight.

  • @sr71ablackbird

well, if you are referring to `ruts' as what we call `potholes' down here, we have more than our fair share of them, hell, there's hardly a side-street that one can go down without hitting one, the only streets that were of any `value' as you say at all are the `main' streets that are most heavily traveled, and at most these days, they only hold up to 10 years as opposed to the 40 years that they used to hold up. before the paving, there used to be nothing but bricks in the road as a `pavement' and that was good enough. because they're still under the pavement on top of it.
