It's about the death of a parent. It's mid album, therefore mid life. Which is when one generally loses a parent or two.

Some months after recording her part, Clare Tory was walking past a record shop and noticed the new Pink Floyd album in the window. Not knowing if her bit had been used she bought a copy, took it home and played it, to find they had indeed used her performance. An legendary performance on a legendary track from a legendary album by a legendary band. Thanks for the reaction guys, awesome work.

She had to sue Pink Floyd#'s publishers to get a co-composer credit years later even though she improvised the part herself with no real direction.

@@Claymor621 Partly true. She did sue (and rightly won her co-credit) and she did improvise, but she *was* given direction, even if it was only general suggestions. Waters said he told her ""There's no lyrics. It's about dying - have a bit of a sing on that, girl." and Gilmour said "We had to encourage her a little bit. We gave her some dynamic hints: "Maybe you'd like to do this piece quietly, and this piece louder." She did maybe half a dozen takes, and then afterwards we compiled the final performance out of all the bits. It wasn't done in one single take." I think the most amazing thing about her performance is that after it was over, according to many (Pink Floyd members and studio personnel), she was apologetic about her performance which puzzled them because they thought she had been fabulous.

This was my husband's favourite track from Dark Side. I lost him 3 years ago and this is such a hard listen for me because it brings up all the emotions I felt and still feel about him and losing him. Only the Floyd can take your pain, put it to music and give you a such a cathartic experience.

Well it isn't death that's 'The Great Gig In The Sky' It's Heaven, that's the great gig in the sky. And it's from the belief that we still have much more music in us to make (metaphorically) even after death, so we must go to that great gig in the sky... So we don't all have a great gig in the sky, hopefully some ppl have a shit gig in the burning pits of hell. All the evil fkrs out there.

I think this song is about the 5 stages of grief: Denial Anger Bargaining Depression Acceptance Except with this song, there are no lyrics, its the sound of pure emotion telling the tale.

I was so fortunate as a 15 year old in 1973 to see Pink Floyd live in concert. They played Dark Side Of The Moon, cover to cover, with no stops. Pink smoke, incredible light show. I love so many genres of music, so many bands and performers, but no music has ever touched my soul the way that Pink Floyd has. The best of the best. So happy to see that the younger generation can appreciate my generations music. Great reaction guys

I had to wait 3 more years to see sun light... But I was lucky enough to see them at 18 in 1994... Of course I'd like to have Roger and Roger too, but at least they played Dark Side of the Moon almost entirely, the best show I've ever seen/heard.

The song is about the process of letting go - of EVERYTHING. Letting go of life itself. First fighting to hang on, then angry at recognizing it's truly the end, then gradual acceptance, finally fading away. It just doesn't get more profound than that. The fact it's done without words, just pure emotion, is absolute genius. It speaks to everyone.

I just flip the vinyl record over and the beat continues back to side 1.

Clare Torry was asked by the band to sing as if she was entering heaven after death,then let her loose. There was pain,then serenity then finally,peace.

One of the privileges of this album is listening to it and deciding what it means to you. Listen to it alone. Turn out the lights, put on your best headphones, lay down, let yourself be absorbed by the experience.

She actually did it in two and a half takes. They used bits from all three. She did an amazing job and while other singers come close, no one can match the sheer emotion Clare brought to this song. And Pink Floyd are geniuses.

The song begins, " I' m not afraid of dying". This song to me has always been about the knowedge of ones death, the fight, maybe the anger, and at last the acceptance, as the spirit departs.

I NEVER knew that backstory. Wow. Thank you. It’s wailing. When my Mother died, I did it. It was something within me. I mean, I couldn’t stop. It was so primal; like when we sneeze or have the hiccups. It was like that. And it came out of nowhere. That’s what I think when I hear this. Anyway, fascinating backstory.

They rekon that when she was finished this improvised singing the band walked out the recording studio. She thought they were disappointed in her. Little did she realise they walked out in stunned disbelief

Thank you, Clare Tory! I've heard she did this in two takes - a warm-up, then the take. Her instructions were to basically express death and loss without using any words. This is what we got. Clare was paid about $100 for the gig. Cheers....

Laura robinson is correct. It's about your death then moving toward whatever place you wish to move to.

The song is about a person’s life, from birth to death. It connects to the previous song Time at the end where Gilmour sang: “Far away across the field, the tolling of the iron bell. Calls their faith for to their knees, to hear the softly speaking magic spell”, showing all people are afraid of dying.

Patrick felt this song and its meaning but was so awestuck by the intro and then Clare Tory exploring the first emotion of death, Anger, so intensely he was fighting the catharsis that results after hearing the song. He has to listen to it again when he is by himself and usually when a crisis occurs to fully accept and work through the emotion and resulting uplifiting and the final part of the meaning of the song, acceptance.

Need to listen to the whole album from start to finish.

As others have mentioned she was told to give a vocal impression of dying. You can hear the lamenting of loss in her voice. The sorrow, the joy, the rage, the terror and the ultimate acceptance of her fate.

This song follows "TIME" on the album. "TIME" is about the fleeting aspect of our lives, and "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY" carries on with the human journey once our time in flesh has concluded. It is the flight of our souls -- our very being -- that leaves behind the husks of our former lives, all the joy, all the memories, all the pain, even our language, to soar away on the winds of Eternity. Clare Torry's vocals are the soulsong of someone on that journey, and it resonates with that part of us that lies buried within, awaiting the time when it will make that same journey. I was a baby in the crib when this came out and I was pretty much weened on 'The Dark side' by my parents. It's good to see kids my sons age who appreciated music I was born to, almost 50 years ago.

They asked her to invoke the feeling of loss/death. Great instincts.

Patrick, your reaction was the most awesome I’ve seen. I saw anger and frustration planted in you by this vocal and you unleashed it to be seen by all. I think that’s exactly what they wanted (as well as other things). If you didn’t know “gig” is slang word for live performance or concert. So “gig in the sky” would be a performers final concert before God. When I first heard this song I understood “gig in the sky” but I couldn’t immediately piece together what I was hearing, although like you I could feel something very much more significant than a great vocal performance. Thanks for sharing your experience for us to see. I never get tired of this song, even after 40 years I get the same reaction every time.

Fun fact! Claire Torry was interviewed some years later and asked about what she was paid. She said she was only paid as a session vocalist for a song that became legendary. David Gilmour heard that and turned up at her house with a cheque for £500,000 (Pounds not dollars). Probably worth a million $s in those days.

One of the off the cuff prompts from a band member was to think of a mother that had lost her child. Clare Torry stated she didnt know if the band liked her input as not much was said after recording it, the band stated they were overwhelmed by it and were rendered speechless. About the stages of death, I like to think of it as the soul leaving the body but resisting it all the way. DONT LET YOURSELF GO WITH ANY REGRETS.

The vocal is made by Clare Torry (to whom, by the way, Pink Floyd initially didn't want to pay the due money). She was asked not to use words and to sing ad lib (as she likes) to the piano background provided by Richard Wright. It took merely two takes to complete that recording. it is about getting to terms with death and accepting it. Towards the end of the track, please listen to an almost-whisper which says "if you can hear this whispering, you're dying".

Maybe it's the contradiction between the pain of birth, life and death that we all go through and the joy, peace and Love we can all give and receive. The singer possibly represents the pain we all face in life, leaving loved ones behind, pain women go through with child birth and also the moments of joy and beauty we have in life. To then possibly reach the other side, The Great Gig in the Sky. The album makes us think about our lives, to enjoy each precious moment, truly value our loved ones, never accept violence in our lives, world and futility of war. To follow our true path home and then we don't need to fear death knowing we have made a real difference to bring peace and harmony to this world and beyond. ☮ 🌎 🙏

He talked over the lady saying "yes I am frightened of dying" - it's about how death would be for each of us. It starts with a guy denying that he's afraid of it. Its a confrontation of denial.

"When I listen to this song, there is no one around." is a perfect way to describe how a lot of people feel when listening to it.

Dark side of the moon is a work of art. Next year in 2023 it will be 50 years old and still the best music ever heard. It has lasted the test of time, and will still be great in another 50 years.

Having lost my husband and best friend suddenly at 48, I lived through those stages of grief, but I never interpreted this song that way, until after.... Soul shaking and powerful to say the least....

They asked her to sing as if she had died and was going to heaven...she says everything without saying a word.

It was two takes, according to the band themselves. Clare was a session singer and was called in at the last moment. She really had no idea what they wanted, so after the first take they told her to think of death etc, and then she let rip. History was made.

This song is about the three stages of death. Anger, Depression and Acceptance. This whole album takes you on a mind trip.

Originally, The Great Gig in the Sky was an innocuous track that was supposed to be used to fill the void ending the side A. In the first demos, a passage from the Bible was read over the piano instrumental, then this was communications from NASA astronauts on mission. With the end result unsatisfying the band members, Alan Parsons enlisted the help of Clare Torry, a studio singer. They ask her to provide them with a vocal improvisation with the only indication of thinking about death and the fear it inspires. Her high-flying performance perfectly transcribing these recommendations and passing through all emotional stages, from hysterical terror to final appeasement is a centerpiece of the record. A sample of her voice is cut and added to the intro of Speak to Me.

She said in an interview that, when they asked her to sing with no words, she tried scatting at first but the band didn’t like that. Then David Gilmore took her aside and said the song is about death. When she asked how to describe that, he suggested thinking of the 5 stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance) and try to intone each if those emotions as she sings the song. The end result was this masterpiece.

It’s so amazing. I had the same WTF reaction the first time I heard this song so many years ago. I had to lift the needle from the record because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Pink floyd goes in... Nd the soul goes out and then you live it till eternity.

Clare Torre is a short little tiny white girl! You would never guess from the power of her voice.

She also nailed that on her first shot ... she started a second take and 1/2 way through she stopped and said she thought they had enough there to work with

she did that in one take. The live version with 3 different singers doing each part is also amazing.

What this song means to me is very simple. The embodiment of grief. In psychiatric circles it is known as DABDA. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, a Swiss American psychiatrist did a lot of work with terminally ill patients and wrote a book “On death and dying,” which stated there are 5 stages of dealing with grief. They are Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. This song covers all 5 for me and has been a comfort for many years.

This is the part where you start to cry (the vocal solo) realizing that you're alive and your airplane crash was just a dream. You can't just forget how it was to die and to be dead in the dream though.

Great reaction...The story goes that the singer Clare Torry was a session singer brought into do some of the backing for the darkside of the moon album after completion they needed to fill the album as they had a few minutes to spare. So pink floyd asked her to do some oooh aaahs and produced a great solo for all time. A foot note to this she was only paid £50 for the day after the album made zillions she contacted EMI as she thought she desserved more so they sent her a further £100 ....Think she desserves at least a million

The song is the feeling of dying. Those last moments you have in your thoughts as your life flashes before your eyes. It is a beautiful piece of art, and probably their best song.

The guy on the right knows what this song is about before it's played. But, it's a concept album. This cut is the final stage of life. Faced with death, the stages from rejection to acceptance. The Dark Side of the Moon was never meant to be cuts.

you always have to listen to Pink Floyd with headphones on and eyes closed, no other way to listen to them, mind blowing,

I wish I could count the number of times I've crawled into bed, headphones on, this album on. No booze, no joint (as others claim), just the pure music. To experience it from beginning to end is the only way. Yes, every track stands alone, but the total? 'The whole is greater than the sum of the parts' was never truer than with Dark Side of the Moon.

She (singer) was dying but she was fighting it, fighting and fighting but she knew it was ending for her so she accepted it and in accepting it she found peace . at last.

I didn't scroll through all the comments cuz it's been a few months and I'm sure there's a lot of them but I don't know if anyone has mentioned that she also did this in ONE TAKE!!! They started recording a second tank but she said that it wouldn't get any better so they didn't even finish the second take!! There's a great interview floating around on KZread of Clare Torry telling the story of how she recorded that special piece of History!!!

This song is about death. The great gig in the sky is leaving to meet your maker...you can hear her not accepting she is dying..screaming...then a bit quieter with a few outbursts ..then accepting slowly and finely fading away

I have always interpreted it as it is the singer who is dying and going from fear to acceptance then drifts off. The only two spoken parts say: "I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it - you've got to go sometime." and a soft female voice later says: "I never said I was frightened of dying". So it has always felt to me to be about passing not grieving. Works either way and just as impactful. Apparently she got £30 for the season and no creative credit on the album. It took a lawsuit in 2005 to get an out of court settlement for what she bought to the track and co credit with Richard Wright on albums after that date.
