I've said that many times. Best method is a dark room, headphones or a stereo pushing about 1000 watts, cold Pepsi and if yer so inclined a couple fine joints or maybe some acid. Those last 2 are optional and a personal preference.

The most expressive guitar solo of all time... the sadness and nostalgia are palpable... this is how the group expressed the loss of their friend to mental illness.

Gilmour's style, as well as many other guitarists from that era were influenced by the old 1920-30's Bluesmen of the South. In fact their named after two early Bluesmen, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. Otherwise you would know them as the "Tea Set."

Yeah, one of the things I love about Gilmour's playing is that he such a blues guy playing progressive/70s kinda music. And his tone/sound/feeling is totally out there. Gilmour's slow tasteful vibratos should be taught at any guitar lessons.

When you listen to these songs for the first time, us that have loved them for years get a chance to vicariously experience them for the first time all over again. It's a weird spiritual gift. We've been given a second chance to fall in love.

Right? I enjoy all kinds of music and love to hear new things and give them a chance and seeing Jamel ride that same journey in front of us is really cool. The members of Pink Floyd went trough some stuff and they captured those times through their music. As much as I feel Rogers Waters might have been a pain to work with, he had a vision of what the entire story an album should tell and that's what's sets Pink Floyd apart from many other bands. I've watched a few videos of Roger Waters on KZread and he seems to show some animosity over things that were done or said and who knows what happened to alienate him from the group. As technology advanced I think Pink Floyd could have done even more incredible things had they been able to stay together. Gilmour has smooth style of guitar and singing and Waters countered that with an edginess using his voice and song tempo. Jamel can come over to my house anytime and listen to this music (I don't think we live that far apart actually). I think he would love to watch "The Wall" movie by Pink Floyd since he seemed to enjoy the artwork done in this video.

Such a great song.

I was probably 15 years old and I loved Pink Floyd for a while already but then when I heard this song it changed the way I listened to music for the rest of my life. I was almost scared like I was hearing something no one else was. I felt like I was floating and my skin tingled like my whole body was a funny bone. I still feel that way everytime I listen to it. I can't even drive and listen to this. It's a musical masterpiece like no other.

Ive said it before. To me, Pink Floyd is not a “rock and roll” band. They are a genre all to themselves. As a lifelong Floyd fan, it does my heart good to see you get this music. Such an amazing musical entity...

Sorry about chiming in here but you could say that about many bands from the 60s and 70s. But I agree, Pink Floyd led that movement. The whole genre could be broken up into hundreds of "sub genres". Bands like Blue Oyster Cult were several genres, depending on where they were in their progression.

Never told this to anyone but the last time I did acid was the Halloween blizzard in 91. That was In Minnesota, I'm 66 now. I was standing on my front steps in north mpls with Pink Floyd on my stereo blasting while totally isolated and the snow untouched several feet deep. I'll never forget the feeling!❤

The guitar is pure emotion in Gilmore s hands. It speaks to you.....inside.

No other guitarist conveys such deep emotion. He is the GOAT in my view. No one else has ever managed to make me cry like that, or feel such deep joy, just from playing a guitar.

The song is about Syd Barrett's descent to madness after to many acid trips. Peace Love the channel

People were constantly spiking his food and drinks with acid and then locking him in closets when he freaked out. He was living one constant bad trip for years. That's enough to drive most people over the edge.

You all just talking about David Gilmore but with out the haunting vocals of Roger Waters the music would have been incomplete.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is one of the alltime great psychedelic songs. Pink Floyd are masters of effects & atmospheric sounds. David Gilmour's guitar playing is so refined & delicate to start & just builds & builds. This masterpiece is so beautiful to hear.

"I never thought I'd like long intros" Eight and a half minutes of intro later...

Keep in mind, all of these songs come from concept albums that are all basically one long song broken into pieces. In other words the “songs” all bleed into each other.

I'm doing Jamel's Pink Floyd Playlist and I had forgotten how incredible they are, I have tears on my face from these guys. David Gilmour and Rick Wright have such a way of playing that hit me right in the feels. It is definitely time for me to listen to them non stop. RIP Syd and Rick

This band is unbelievably talented. Now that you have experienced the magnitude of this talent you need to experience yet another side to this band. Pink Floyd is raw emotion. Its impossible not to have an emotional reaction to their music. Pure artistic mastery.

Momentary lapse of reason is the one that pulls my strings. But i once had a near death experience during which i heard the guitar intro to coming back life!!! from the division bell album. The freaky bit is that album and song didnt get released until 2 years later!!!! True story.

Sometimes it was flat painful to the point I thought Surely somebody was filing my teeth down with a fingernail file😖Knowing my parents'(my mom preferred mine!)Grands',& My music-just didn't make Any sense in how they even Called it Music😱Then there was all the "artist" who were so talentless, they remade older music,& Didn't tell the kids it Wasn't their work😡Same crap happening in the movie industry😖😢

Most people that are musically literate believe that. The thing that sucks is there are entire genres of rock now that are Floyd influenced that don't get commercial airplay. Floyd was a chart band. Musicans have to take the charts back to get people playing again. Tool did it when they released their album and beat Taylor Swift. More need to follow.

This is the song I played to my 15 year old nephew when he asked about the music I like. I’m the Cool Uncle!

my dad introduced me to pink floyd as a child and was pretty much all i grew up on were pink floyd and the moody blues for years, sadly my dad passed away and today being his bday, 77. He may have passed on but floyd memories will never leave me, it was something great. great reaction

All my kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids have heard this piece of music. They also agree that this will play on an endless loop in the background at my funeral...!!!

If you know the backstory of that song, it's even more powerful. Their former lead singer had to quit cos of mental problems and drugs. And this is the tribute to him. And when they recorded that song, he visited them in the studio but no one could recognize him cos he had no hair and was overweight. And some members cried. This song is about how someone can change slowly but surely and is like a different person. The old self vanished. The identity is destroyed

Hey, this is only half of the song! The song is split into multiple parts, half of which are played at the beginning of the album, the second half played at the end. I highly HIGHLY recommend listening to the second half of the song (Parts VI - IX). In fact, I would actually recommend listening to the entire album of "Wish You Were Here" from start to finish. You will not be disappointed. It is UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. Pink Floyd is an "album band," in that their music is best enjoyed by listening to the album as a whole, cohesive unit. For example, Dark Side of the Moon really needs to be heard from start to finish. Some excellent tracks on it, but you really don't "experience" it until you listen to it from front to back. It can actually make you feel like you're high, this band was incredible.

Wish you were here IMHO is the perfect album. I want this song played at my funeral. Nick Mason the drummer for Pink Floyd says this is his favorite album and the only one he still listens to.

I'm 60. A big Floyd fan, and I agree. "Wish You Were Here" is their masterpiece. I can just listen to it on repeat. Over and over. You really cant tell where is begins and ends after a while. And....I'm sober.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time. This music brought me so much peace when life was so chaotic. I could often relax listening to it and go from listening to it into feeling it surround me like a blanket being wrapped around me.

"I'm shakin', bruh. Waiting for this to take off." And yeah, you sure are in for a ride here bruh. One of their absolute master pieces. I remember finding the guitar tabulature for this when internet came along in mid 90s, and yet struggling to learn all of Gilmour's amazing stuff that is on display here. And that's just the guitar parts, everything in this song just show how ridiculously great this band were. And then you realise that the lyrics is about a former member/founder that sadly lost his way at an young age. RIP Sid Barret.

My uncle turned me on to this song in my formative years but my fondest memory is listening to it with my father. We were driving in the early morning from Los Angeles to Las Vegas in the desert watching the sunrise while the music was playing. We both acknowledged how powerful the music was at that moment. I miss my father so much and wish we could have one more road trip together.

I'm so happy you discovered Pink Floyd. I live in Beautiful British Columbia in Canada, home to some of the best scenery in the world. Every Summer, I go backpacking and just camp outdoors, take down some mushrooms, and listen to Pink Floyd. They are so spiritual and uplifting. I end up coming back to the city and my job level headed and relaxed. Definitely a great experience.

Every time, I mean every single time Gilmour hits that first note I get chills.

Just wanted to make sure you were aware that David Gilmour is accompanying Roger Waters with these vocals. The first note is sung by Roger Waters. That being said, it still sounds amazing.

This is so pure. Got the chills watching him react to the lyrics! Exactly how I felt when I first heard it.

Loved your first pause "the anticipation is just so good because you know what's about to happen" I literally laughed and said "No you don't!"

When I saw Pink Floyd in 1977 at the Milwaukee County Stadium, they first played the "Animals" album in its entirety (not in album order), took an intermission, then came back to play "Wish You Were Here" from start to finish, IN ORDER!! I was barely 18 and remember this like yesterday!! Fantastic!! 💗💗💗💗💗

Pink Floyd never rushed anything. Notice how they leave space between notes for you not to miss anything but experience it all

You guys almost never mention the late great Richard Wright. I cant even imagine the Floyd without him.

To have been able to see them live is among my greatest pleasures in life so far.

Jamal, your hand gestures and expression at the first line of the lyrics are exactly mine, moves I've been doing for decades and feelings I still have, probably the thousandth time I've listened to this masterpiece. You are a treasure. Thank you for letting us in to your brain and your heart.

I have to say this. Jamal, there are a lot of people doing these reaction videos. I come to you because of YOU. I can hear this music anytime I want. I was born in 1963 so most of it I heard fresh on the radio. (Yes, we had actual radio stations that played music once...for free). As a 69 year old white dude...it’s heart warming to see you appreciate this band. They were the essence of my life in the early 70s. So much fun. Great memories. I remember playing PF for my sons , it was so cool to see their faces react like it is to seeing you react. Nicely done!

With their music they not only paid tribute to a friend, but made him immortal in order to travel to infinity.

I have been in love with this album for 43 years.

You and me both, 70 and their music makes my heart race just like it did at the live concerts!

Seeing you react to music that I sort of took for granted as a young adult (we were used to nothing but the best!), gives me a whole renewed appreciation of what we knew all along!

A tribute to Syd Barrett, their original lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He only performed on one full album with the band, their debut album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Only one song of his appears on their second album. Beyond that, he became the inspiration for much of the band's later material. You owe it to yourself to look up some of the band's early stuff, as well as some of Syd's solo material, in order to get a better idea of what they're all about and how the whole Pink Floyd experience came to be.

Here we go: Syd was Pink Floyd’s creative force, writing their songs, charismatic lead singer/frontman, guitar player etc. His intellect, creative inspiration & musical vision were key to Floyd early recognition and flowering success story. When he turned up after being unreachable by the band, something had happened to Syd. His personality, his spark and presence was no more. Likely a dormant schizo-affective blown wide open by the use of too much LSD or other drugs he was ingesting-in copious amounts created by chemist friends he was living amongst. Just at the point of recognition and chart success, he became a frustrating liability and faded into the shadows... Syd’s creative influence with the unexpected loss of such an integral member, drove Pink Floyd into developing their own sound. It served to expand psychological depths of emotional communication in their songwriting and musical content. ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond” held the greatest meaning for them -to acknowledge and pay tribute to Syd Barrett.

"You got to sit back and enjoy the ride" been enjoying the Pink Floyd ride for over 45 years!

Close your eyes and you can actually "see" the music. A Musical masterpiece is a journey when done right... it's an experience, friend. It will open your mind.

David Gilmour's playing is genius. I use the word because what he does seems simple & completely natural but he produces a perfection of feeling, tone & precision that very few could ever match let alone surpass !

One of the most beautiful songs ever written and recorded. And Gilmore’s guitar playing is just amazing as always.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a nine-part Pink Floyd composition written by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. It appeared on Pink Floyd's 1975 concept album Wish You Were Here. The song is written about and dedicated to Syd Barrett, who left the band in 1968 due to deteriorating mental health. The song was conceived and written as a tribute and remembrance to their former band member Syd Barrett, a founding member of Pink Floyd. Barrett was ousted from the band by the other members in 1968 due to his drug use and troubled mental health, which had affected his ability to integrate with the rest of the band and perform and create as a musician. He was replaced by David Gilmour, Barrett's former school friend who had initially been brought in as second guitar. The remaining band members felt guilty for removing him, but they viewed it as necessary, admiring Barrett's creativity and being concerned about his severe mental decline. The work was first performed on their 1974 French tour and recorded for their 1975 concept album Wish You Were Here. It was intended to be a side-long composition (like "Atom Heart Mother" and "Echoes") but was split into two sections and used to bookend the album, with new material composed that was more relevant to the album and to the situation in which the band found themselves.

There is only one true way to listen to this song (studio version) And that is in a candlelit room, laying down with the best headphones you can find.

I had a friend at university who succumbed to severe paranoid schizophrenia. He was much loved but he really did wear out his welcome with random precision. He was all over the place with his thoughts and statements, we just didn't know how to handle him, we were too young and we didn't know what was going on. I weep for my friend when I hear this as we both loved Pink Floyd, but little did I know how poignant this song would become 30 years down the road.

I always thought it was "wind up precision". Learned something new

When I was in junior high I really got into Pink Floyd and I put the cassette (yes I’m that old) in the stereo in her car while we were out driving. She listened to a lot of classical and orchestra music. During this intro I started to say something and she shushed me and turned it up real loud. It wasn’t until the singing started that she realized it was my music and not hers. I made a Pink Floyd fan out of my grandmother after that.

I love many groups, and some of them are very good, but Pink Floyd are a step above everything I ever heard in my life. This song especially it's something out of this planet.
