The Pink Floyd formed in 1965 with leader Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. An era often overshadowed this documentary covers each time period and album of the band from 1965-1985 as well as an inside look at rare interviews and footage.
Credited
John Edginton Roger Waters and Richard Wright and Bob Klose interviews conducted by John.
Charles Miller/Worldman (Cincinnati 1977 & Audio Sync)

DSOTM DOCUMENTARY (2003)
The Mudman 1984 Interview
Pink Floyd The Early Years 1967-1972
234Cheech 1969 Interview
There was a lot of rare interviews and videos I had to dig through on the internet but I credited what I can remember.
Honourable mentions for the doc.
They were first called The MegaDeth.
The name is derived from the given names of two blues musicians whose Piedmont blues records Barrett had in his collection, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.
Arnold Layne was banned from BBC
Gear was stolen on ummagumma tour including David’s first White Telecaster
Syd Barrett’s overdose
Syd Barrett’s solo albums
A momentary lapse of reason, the division bell and the endless river.

It has been 2 years since I released this film I made… I truly made this out of pure love for the band and nothing else, the feedback I’ve gotten from everyone even to this day astounds me and I’m extremely grateful, 1 million of you took time to look at something I made out of love and I’ll forever be grateful for all of you for that, and I’ll forever be grateful for pink floyd for allowing this to stay up… it really means a lot to me as a lifelong fan, and I cherish every moment of it. A couple of things I want to mention is I know there are a couple audio glitches here and there, and I got a fact or two wrong, but again as I mentioned doing it out of love, I didn’t expect it to be perfect, if I could go back and change everything and do it the right way I absolutely would… but because of the view count I’ll allow it to stay and do better for future projects… again thank you all. You are the reason I do what I do.

I've loved the Floyd since I can remember. I am 63 years old and I have been playing guitar for 54 years. I'm from Croatia, ex-Yugoslavia from Zadar on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. I was at the Floyd concert at the Olympiahalle in Munich on the Animals tour. An unforgettable concert. During the war in Croatia, I was a volunteer in 91-95 and my fellow soldiers arranged for me to go to Italy for the PULSE concert, but I refused at the last minute. I was ashamed to go and leave my comrades. But I watched the concert in London twice on TV. The best band in the world.

The positive feedback truly is amazing thank you all, I just want to say although this isn’t an official release and is a fan made documentary, you all make it feel as though it very well could be. Many blessings and more content to come in the future. ❤️ all credits to those involved and big thanks to everyone who circulated the footage through the interwebs for the last 20+ years. If It wasn’t for you none of this would exist for us to see. I always watched old documentaries and found it was lacking many parts of the story. I always just wanted to compile everything and make it easy for a first time pink floyd listener to understand. Also big thanks to pink floyd for allowing this to stay up. Your music is truly a blessing to us all.

Roger describing Syd’s song “Bike” rather sums up the love and fascination of Barrett’s work. He was truly the launching pad!!! The other guys would have never been able continue without the early success and recognition they got from Syd! Still, they went on as Pink Floyd without him. (You listening, Roger)? They were a totally different band without him, ( and I AM GLAD they went on and became the New Pink Floyd)!! NOBODY could have predicted they would go on to create the most timeless, enduring music EVER recorded!!!! NOBODY, NEVER, could envision the future popularity of the early Pink Floyd!!

I’ve said as much elsewhere, but I agree that they were on a strong enough path that they could have renamed to “The Floyd” or whatever and given a better nod or acknowledgement that Pink Floyd was Syd’s band that was greatly changed by his omission. They admit that their minds weren’t in that sort of space, not feeling much sympathy for Syd and ultimately just not picking him up anymore, but yeah - I think all of that could have been better handled.

I was going to fail senior year of high school by one test. My teacher have me the opportunity to do a report on anything and if it was good enough they would let me pass. But I hated this teacher and she hated me, so I decided to fail senior year by doing a report on Pink Floyd. Long story short, I passed. I suspect if youtube or this documentary existed at the time I would have never been given the chance to save myself. A massive life lesson was learned and Pink Floyd was the vehicle and soundtrack to that time. Such a dynamic band and such dynamic lyrics. They change meaning as my life and perspective changes. Pink Floyd was special.

Thank you for this incredible documentary about this legendary groundbreaking group. Pink Floyd has always been my favorite group. The early years of their music saw the exploratory experimentation of sound. But many tracks were a form of nontraditional 60s pop-rock. Many rock fans forget their early achievements and just focus on their 70s album compilations. This documentary, On Thin Ice, extraordinarily splices rare interviews, music videos and unseen footage. Wow !

My first thought was "I've probably seen most of stuff anyway" but had a look and was interested throughout the docu. A very good film and of course a big homage to Syd Barrett, as catalyst of something that'll be remembered for ever. The title is so apt as that is where we are right now with lockdown in the uk till beginning of december, we're all skating on thin ice, great we can still hear any music we want to until we can't, A great band who I saw live in the late sixties and went on a call out to the Busy Bee on the M1 to rescue their ford transit, with the gong on the back, on its way to Luton for a gig, subsequentially cancelled,we towed them back to London where they had a gig in hyde park the next day. That's another story

The style of the band at this point was heavily indebted to the first Pink Floyd album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, but filtered through their own color spectrum. The Pink Floyd connection went beyond mere sonic hat tipping, since Alice Cooper played host to Pink Floyd on the British band's first U.S. tour. “We were the house band at the Cheetah for a period of time in ’67,” Smith recalls. “One of the perks was we could go see any of the bands playing there. Pink Floyd were there one week. I remember the first or second song they played, Syd went up to sing and boom! A spark came from the microphone and hit his lip. He just put his arms down to his sides, backed about a foot away from the stand and just stood there like a statue for the rest of the night. After the show, they came back to our house and partied with us all night long. Syd walked in like a zombie. He didn’t talk to anybody, he just stood there. He seemed a bit psychotic, and the mass quantities of LSD certainly didn’t help.” Read More: Alice Cooper Drummer Neal Smith Recalls the Early Days | ultimateclassicrock.com/alice-cooper-neal-smith-interview-2018/? Brilliant. I am a serious Floyd phile and this is the first Doc in a long time where I heard things I actually did not know. Truly appreciated. Looking forward to seeing Roger in 2022. Also I liked hearing Roger talk about the 77 tour and how a lot of the "fans" were just there for the beer. When I saw the "Delecate Sound Of Thunder" tour at the Orange Bowl in Miami, a guy threw up on my shoes.. I saw Roger around the same time on The Pros and Cons tour. Totally different crowd. Those two shows and the crowds at each defined exactly what he was talking about in that interview. It's nice to see that all these years later Waters is finally, and deservedly, getting the crowds Gilmour did with his version of Floyd.

What a fantastic documentary!! It seems to be so thorough, with a lot of rare footage and superb detail. The fireworks incident, by the way, occurred on July 4th, 1977 at Madison Square Garden in NYC during the Animals tour. The explosion, fortunately, happened above our heads. Nobody was hurt. It could have been deadly if just another second or two had passed. When leaving the venue, I saw a young moron light an M-80 and drop it down the stairwell, crowded with people exiting. I watched it land on the next stair platform, and was able to stop anyone from walking further down the stairs and getting hurt. I still regret letting that moron get away without a lump on his head or worse.

Best Doc. on the subject ever. Thank you. I heard DOS in 73 , @ 13 I was blown away, but they were an album band not getting much air play on any stations I could get..maybe money...but even then only slightly, I know Dark side is praised as the break album but I would say The Wall was the big FM break out suddenly everyone is a Floyd fan. As far as Syd vs Roger floyd , Roger was a brilliant lyricist and word master who made you think . And David was not known as the guitar god he is today, but every one knew who Jimmy and Eric were. he wasn't as recognized early to mid 70's { he should have been, brilliant playing} . And Syd had great lyrics but its apples and oranges in context. I heard DOS in 73 so the only place to get more floyd was to go backwards. Roger is obviously proud to be playing to 4000 people while Led Zepplin was filling stadiums and all over FM radio. Floyd was the most underrated band of their time b4 The Wall. then the masses went backwards. They are the best band ever to me.

David, Roger, (a pox on their stiff necked ego feud), Rick and Nick together are what made the band and the music so perfect. It was a synergy. Syd was Syd but if he hadn't left and been replaced by David we would never have had the brilliance of Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut. That body of work owes little or nothing to Syd except perhaps an essentially willingness to aimlessly jam until something brilliant came out. Without Echos and some of the pieces on Obscured by Clouds we would never have the work that we (or at least I) consider the height of Pink Floyd. Under Syd they were just another psychedelic pop band and they would never have evolved into the band that they became.

Thanks for a piece made from a compassionate and intelligent perspective, that made me understand even better. That’s not a small accolade, coming from one who has had this band as the score for his life. Born in 60, I was too young and musically uneducated to detect them properly until Wish You Were here, but since I’ve never let this musical universe go. When The Wall came, a friend of mine and me translated the text to Norwegian and sold paper copies with our own drawings on. We sold quite a lot of it and made some money. I know for a fact that this sold a few hundred more albums, so I don’t feel bad about it. :-) I was at London O2 Stadium in something like 2005, for Roger Waters’ The Wall. Around the middle, David Gilmour took over playing the guitar. Waters apparently didn’t know about this, but recognised it immediately. I was close and he looked VERY happy when Gilmour entered the stage playing! There were quite a few tears in the room, I can promise! Mine included. I listen to other music too, of course, including classic music, jazz (my girlfriend is a jazz singer) and even some of what’s popular at the moment, but I always listen to Pink Floyd music at high volume now and then. Always brings out the goose bumps. I love music!

My introduction to early Floyd came through the "Relics" album in '74, rather than "Piper...". I remember buying "Relics" and "More" on the same day from Bruce's Records in Glasgow. I still have that copy of "More" but "Relics" has long disappeared!

Astoundingly good documentary. The other comments here sum it up so well, so no need for me to add more. Just want to say THANK YOU to the film-maker who made this and posted here for our enjoyment. To get 20 years of Floyd history into an hour and a half is a feat in itself, there's so much more that could be included but he/she really captures the spirit and transitions in the Floyd sound and development from the early psychedlic era to the massive stadium giants they became. That little clip of the four of them together in 2005 makes me happy and sad at the same time. Wish I was there!
