A little insight in to Roger Waters the writer of the Wall: 2nd Lt Eric Fletcher Waters "He was born in 1913 in Surrey, England. During World War II, he was an officer of the 8th Royal Fusiliers. He died in Anzio, Italy, during Operation Shingle or The Battle of Anzio; declared missing or presumed dead on February 18, 1944. He and his wife Mary had two sons, the younger being Roger Waters, cofounder, bassist and songwriter for the rock band Pink Floyd. Eric Waters died when son Roger was only five months old, but many of Roger Waters' albums and songs reference the evils of war and his father's death as a result of it. The 1983 Pink Floyd album 'The Final Cut' was written entirely by Roger Waters and dedicated to the father that he never knew." "And that's how the High Command took my daddy from me!" He got my sub today as well. I have seen so many of these "person listens to shit that is outside of his depth" videos to make me nauseous. But Jamel appreciates where these artists are coming from. Taking the time to understand the metaphors of progressive rockers such as Pink Floyd and Rush really impressed this old geezer. Jamel, take the time to watch the movie, "Pink Floyd: The Wall." It's a movie to accompany this album. It'll open your mind.

True, his dad died in WWII and his fathers father (Rogers grandfather) died in WWI. I think it's pretty obvious why Roger is so anti-war. "The Wall" tells the story of Pink, an embittered and alienated rock star. As told through the song "Mother", part of Pink's sense of alienation comes from being raised by an overprotective single mother, who lost her husband, Pink's father, in World War II. The song narrates a conversation by Pink (voiced by Waters) and his mother (voiced by Gilmour). The listener learns of the over-protectiveness of Pink's mother, who is helping Pink build his wall to try to protect him from the outside world, evidenced by the line spoken by Pink's mother. She insists that Pink stay by her side even after he grows up, and cannot stand it when Pink eventually grows older and falls in love.

Every mother - every parent - does the best they know how. As a parent now this song sounds so different to me than it did as a teenager. I feel for the mother who has less choice in how she raises her child than I ever realized. And I know I can only raise my child based on how I learned. It’s both scary and freeing in some way. The incredible thing about this song, and the whole album, is that it captures both the sad reality of why others with power act a certain way, and also the horrible effect it has on those impacted. It’s not a simple one sided story. Maybe this is why it resonated with so many people and lasted as a masterpiece in ways the current dance anthems never will.

David Gilmore, Live from Gdańsk, Fat Old Sun. It’s old Pink Floyd with a kick ass guitar solo.

This song brings out just as much emotion as Wish You We’re Here by Floyd. Makes me cry how beautiful it is

I'm gonna echo all the people here who say you really need to watch the movie. It ties everything together and lets you see the entire story. Plus, it's a really good movie.

This song f’s me up all the time. I remember my mother waiting up when I came home from partying when I was a teen. I remember her love and care. Her opinions about my different girlfriends. She was always spot on. My mom passed 16 years ago. This song…

I went to a Roger Waters concert a few years back where he did the entire album The Wall, from start to finish. Throughout the concert they had people building a wall around the band. Until at the very end they were completely behind a wall. If you ever get the opportunity to see Roger Waters I would highly suggest it. Thanks for playing this song... keep up the good work

Sandy Miller One of the best shows I've ever seen. It surely was epic, wasn't it? Amazing production.

You need to listen to the whole album in order for it to really make sense. Members of Pink Floyd were all affected by their lives in post WWII England. The songs reflect a lot of that trauma.
