Ping G430 Irons tested by Average Golfer

Спорт

The new Ping G430 irons will be the best selling irons of 2023 in my opinion, are they the most forgiving and best irons for mid to high handicap golfers?

    I would love to get the new i230’s but my handicap dropped to a 4 when I got rid of the original I E1 irons and went to G30’s! I am in my 50’s so I am getting G430’s this spring!

    These are definitely on my to try list, I think these and the 0211 xcore 2 are some of the best looking irons this year (blades look better but I'm not that type of golfer 😂) I was very heavily leaning towards 0211 but they have a) just put the price up which makes them very close to the g430s on American golf and b) you have to pay for them out right which isn't what I want to do just now as I'm re mortgaging and going to put another down payment so want to do that and pay off irons at roughly same time or just after ( adulting and priorities 😤)

    I bought a full set of Callaway Rogue ST Max in the spring thinking my play would improve. Man was I wrong, at least so far. It’s more about the amount you can play or practice verses which high end clubs you think you need. But I bet those 430s are amazing to hit…….

    I got a chance to play these a few days ago, and they are nothing short of amazing. First of all, they're absolute nukes. Distance will not be a problem with these, in any of the loft spec settings. But moreso than that, these irons are just incredibly forgiving. Mishits still find their way straight-ish. Dispersion on clean shots is superb. You get such great descent angles on the low irons and such distance on the long irons, that I'm well ok with all of the spin numbers. I wasn't planning on buying new irons this year, but I'm pretty sure these will be in my bag before March.

    The three biggest changes in these irons from the previous generation is that the center of gravity is lower, the face will Flex more because of the way they heated the steel which will create higher ball speeds and they are stronger lofted.

    That spin number bothers me too, but....... with a stronger loft, that they are able to get a higher launch, I would say try them and see if you get enough spin on the green. If you do, then just ignore those spin numbers. I know a 7 iron of 34 degrees of loft is standard, and they should also get 7000 on the spin rate. Each club USED to get the same spin and the number on the club other than in the thousands. 4 iron, 4000 spin. 9 iron, 9000 spin. Let’s see how they act on the greens. If the stop good and back up like they are supposed to when we hit them good, then that spin number is a non issue.

    They are great performers. But, in Canada a set of these the price was jacked on the G430 by a whopping $300 over the G425. That’s sad. A set is about $1650 CDN plus taxes. Ouch. Mizuno has Great irons out this year also, at much less of a cost and cosmetically every bit as appealing. Love Ping clubs, the G425 were excellent looking and performing but this price gouge regardless of technology is not going to boost an average golfers game by a significant amount to support the steep price. I’ll go Mizuno or Cobra based on performance and a much more reasonable price point

    Andy, I didn’t fully understand your g430 “disappointing” spin comments. The launch angle and distance seemed fine and relatively constant over your 2-3 shots with each iron. • @TheAverageGolfer

    Isn't the low spin issue a bit of a red herring? Yes, 5 iron to 5 iron they spin significantly lower than traditional lofts. My current 3 iron is 21°. The G430 5 iron is 22°. I would guess that these two clubs would have similar spin numbers, but the G430 would launch much higher, carry further and stop more quickly because of the descent angle. The real issue is should we AVGs even use the G430 5 iron, regardless its relative friendliness? I don't carry either of my 3 and 4 irons anymore... I imagine in a fit, many of us would transition into hybrids or crossovers below the 6 or even 7 iron in this set...

    We need to address the elephant in the room - the low spin rates. I think the peak height and descent angle will give a reasonable measure of control (maybe not on hard links greens in the height of summer) despite the spin rates. Also, at least when I tested clubs, spin rates off the mat were always 500-800 rpm lower than when I tested off grass. The more difficult issue, and one that applies to all high launching, lower spinning designs of game improvement irons is that they are one dimensional - they get control by launching the ball high and having a steep descent angle. Great in calm conditions, bit of a problem when the wind blows. Still think Andy is right though, the G430s will be the best selling iron out there this year

    From my research, most experts indicate as long as you have at least a 45-degree descent angle the ball will hold on most greens with a 28-degree lofted club or higher

    Really want to like the look of Ping irons but it just doesn’t work for me. I’ve played callaways irons of a variety of models for years and ping just don’t look right. I’m sure these are going to do really well this year, they are just so expensive (like most irons) are you going to be looking at Aerojet irons ( I know cobra aren’t always your favourite) but the iron sets seems to be so much better value than the other big names

    I don't think there's a huge price tag on these, American golf is £769 which seems average the 0211s which I was looking at are about the same price now, I also think this year the g430s look the best so far, the cobras look abit cheap and nasty to me, the ltdx looked better

  • @jameshopcroft8743

    @jameshopcroft8743

    Cheaper than I expected though American golf has them listed lower than the rrp. Though if I was to buy I’d have to redo my wedge gaping as well which would add to it as the PW is 3 degrees stronger than my 2018 rogues at 41 degrees

  • @anthonyhemsworth7417

    @anthonyhemsworth7417

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah the gapping probably abit of an issue for some players but I think if these are going further, in theory you should be closer to the pin anyway so if you have a 52 56 60 like I do I don't think I need to bridge the 41 degree pitching wedge as chances are I'll be closer than what I am now, the only issue maybe short par 3s but you adapt and maybe hit the pw at 90% 🤷‍♂️

    Watching club reviews on YT has almost left the building for me. You rarely get any information on shaft specs. Is the 430 using the same shaft as the 425? It's hard for me to understand how little emphasis is given to stock shaft options and performance when it comes to feel. You talk about sound and feel and the shafts affect this. Example, the 425's came in two stock shaft options, I tried them in the TT 105 S300 and they were hard for me to control and felt hard (for me), but they were much better in the AWT stiff flex. I recommend going to your local golf shop and hitting them yourself, the YT reviews give you a good look at the product vs performance. Shafts matter! But, with that being said I do enjoy your channel in regards to other content, but your club reviews fall a little short.

  • @TheAverageGolfer

    @TheAverageGolfer

    Жыл бұрын

    Because shaft choices are very much suited to an individuals swing and ‘my’ shaft should mean very little to a viewer, it is paramount a golfer gets custom fit and tries multiple shaft options to find what best suits THERE game not what a YT review features

    Don’t worry, bud…the NEXT set will work for you 😂 I teach golf in the US, and I would have to recommend that you take at least 2 lessons within 14-21 days…with a qualified, and experienced coach…do what they tell you to do, forget about results-go mess up a bunch and hit some terrible shots-track your progress daily, record your swing every 2 weeks, and if you’re not seeing some hints of success fairly quickly, ask your coach what is happening/why you aren’t improving…if you agree with them, buy the PACKAGE they recommend, based on YOUR GOALS and desired outcomes, and do the work for 6 months…you’ll be a different player, and person🥂

    Just picking up on your comment about hitting from the mats. I would just like to add on your impact / spin is not just the mats but if they are wet / how wet / if at the range how wet the balls / how wet are the balls wet in the caddy. I know ping have the water management but if they are soaked and then your swing???? I have always dried the ball for tee shots in my session and shake a bit off
