GOOD TO SEE THESE TWO CAPTIANS FLY THE MD-80. I WISH EVERY ACTIVE COMMERCIAL AIRLINER PILOT COULD HAVE EXPERIENCE FLYING THE MD-80 SERIES TYPE. MAKES THEM LESS DEPENDANT ON AUTO MODES. THANKS!
The classic MD, I miss seeing these older planes. I really enjoy listening to this pilot as he explains everything and shows us what he's talking about. You really do learn about this aircraft from him. Beautiful plane and cockpit, great pilots, and awesome takeoff and landing that sounds great. The view outside is beautiful; the skies, the landscape, and the view of different cities/towns are all amazing. I also love flying through the clouds as well. Another amazing video full of amazing scenery, learning experience of this MD, and hearing and watching these pilots. I love it all, awesome video.

@@justplanes Back in the late 60s/early 70s, I was systems engineer/programmer responsible for the maintenance/repair catalog & provisioning for DC8s & DC9s (including the Big Bunny Stretch-8). The "DC" stood for Douglas Commercial. By my time, Douglas had already merged with McDonnell (1967), but the planes were still branded DC through the DC-10 tri-jet.
Beautiful plane.
Glad to see video of this masterpiece of a plane.

He kept the speed up above 230 kts or higher until glideslope intercept. And the landing lights are hot so turn them off as soon as possible. Also, I think I heard the callsign as "Norse Shuttle" which Norwegian uses also? Thanks for the videos. Nice flying ... relaxed, efficient, safe.
@simsalabim62

Correct! Nor Shuttle is the callsign of Norwegian. Norwegian "wet leased" OY-RUE for a year - so this DAT MD83 operated during that time as Nor Shuttle.
@justplanes

It was a flight operated for Norwegian, thats why you hear that call sign. Glad you liked the video James and thanks for watching/commenting.
When was this video taken, have SAS retired their Super 80s since then? I'm 19 and would love to have the chance to fly the md80 even just once before they're all gone, I flew on a Fokker 100 with Austrian once when i was 7 and it was amazing, would love to fly that again too :)

haha true. With the engines so far back its not too noisy.
Fast, at low level on descent (300kt at 3300').
So, are they normally so late on manual take over for landing? And so early for Auto pilot on departure. Both seem very quick, or was the film abbreviated? Very little manual flying, don't they trust the pilots, LOL?

Johnny never let me down I wonder if the captain flying was lazy and didn’t want to hand fly. A shame, really.
@peterdamberg
3 жыл бұрын
It depends. Both high intensity airports, a non routine captain in the RH seat due FO shortage, a dude from JP on the Jumpseat with at least 4 cameras rolling. It comes down to basic threat and error management and airmanship, if this should be the flight to train (showboating) your manual skills on. Thrust me, no matter how much you use the automatization on a MD, you are lightyears ahead on keeping your pilot skills compared with other modern planes 😊

Who’s here after flying the Leonardo Md80 in msfs ?😂
My relative was killed on an Alaskan airlines md 80 around 20 years ago because the jack screw in the tail broke due to poor maintenance. I’ve always had a weird feeling towards this plane but I guess the plane is fine it was cheapskates not doing what they should and lying on maintenance records.
My man barely flew it at all 😂. Positive rate, gear up. Autopilot.
Thousands of pilots wanting to fly that beauty and this skipper throws the AP right after liftoff... 🤦🏻♂️

Yep, it’s old and thirsty, but requires some piloting skills. Having the luxury to fly both the MD and Airbus, there is absolutely no question what equipment I would chose to fly Funchal, Vagar and Nasarsuaq. Airbus has a superior office and protection systems, but the MD is just a great plane to fly 💪
