Pilothouse Fitout - Part 9 - Epoxy Table Top and more

We connected push pull cables in the engine room. Mounted fixtures in the pilothouse. And finished a beautiful pilothouse table to go with the worlds most awesome ships wheel. Thanks to Steven Rangel from Boston, Patrick "OK Diver" and TotalBoat for the Table Top Epoxy and Varnish.

Parts of it I feel are a littttle wreckless, but I think that is what Doug is going for. Improvise, Adapt and Overcome. And he's got the skills to fix any issue along the way. So excited to see this in the water.

I do a lot of work with epoxy tabletops is something a lot of people seem to forget especially when you're doing the top for outdoor use is that epoxy degrades pretty rapidly with UV light. So you need to cover it with I usually use polyurethane but spar varnish will work really well also.

Carbon Star is right to suggest putting a thin layer of finish before pouring on the clear epoxy. 7 years ago i did a double sided table for my boat using table top epoxy. Both sides because it fold over and up to the bulkhead to be out of the way. I use Catalpa wood, which is like Oak, very porous. Air bubbles were a nightmare. I am thinking of now putting on a layer of the Halcyon product. it wasn't around 7 years ago and since my beautiful table has some scratches. I have used Halcyon in other areas and at home. Great stuff. Very hard surface. I have had it on a refinished handrail for about 18 months now and still looks new.

Yes, it was sad for us also. 11 months of hard work by 2 old people well on the downhill side of our 70s. One engine cough while warming up is all it took. We did get to drive her for close to 1,000 miles. Flo does not like to pay fair value for 40-year-old off-frame restorations but she has no trouble in knowing she has deep pockets in her apron to keep from playing fair. We still have the truck and my service dog will not go near it. She was in the truck when the fire was blowing back thru the door opening and I had to reach in and pull her out. Thank you for noticing and thank you to Doug for including Honey Bee's photos.

With all the different work and the money detail that you put into certain things I'm surprised that you didn't put some sort of a big nautical map down. I would not be surprised if you did eventually with the new table top cool maybe with a map showing all the different places you have been within the first couple years of the boat on the water so many different places you have been.

@@SVSeeker sorry I just saw this. My thinking on this is within the bristles in the brush or foam brush. When you flip the brush to the opposite side there will be some air trapped and bubbles generated from inside the bristles and voids in the foam. If you drag the brush in the same direction this seems to be less of a problem . I know you are a man and we don't read the directions. : ) It is on the directions somewhere and is something I just know you are to do from way back. Also when you stab the bristles into sharp corner's bubbles are being generated. If I was on my laptop I would search for a link . I will as an added reply later . I know guitars are sprayed on and some dipped. But a buffing wheel with different polishs are used. Also self leveling pour on finishes can have good results also. Don't shake and stir gently but stir well. Also every time you dip your brush you accumulate a foam in your container you dip from. Http://www.rawhydefurnishings.com/7-tips-applying-polyurethane/ .
