I love how Maverick “teaches” Hangman. He doesn’t just beat him, he does it in a way that reinforces why his earlier behavior was wrong. Love this movie so much.

Hangman is the “Maverick” of Tom Gun Maverick. In the original movie, it was Maverick who abandoned his wingmen. In this movie, Hangman is the dangerous one and abandoned his wingmen, hince his callsign. As such, Maverick literally sees his younger self in Hangman and doesn’t want to have him repeat his past mistakes.

That scene reminded me of a scene in the first Top Gun movie with a similar response. Maverick got cocky and abandoned his lead in a mock dogfight to chase after Viper only to have Jester sneak behind him and shoot him down. Then Goose responded with "The Defense Department regrets to inform you that your sons are dead because they were stupid."

I'm a former F-4 and F-16 pilot. Some of what you see here isn't the way it's really done but this is still a kick-ass scene for me. The aerial film work is incredible. When I saw it in theater, without realizing it I caught myself doing the muscle work that a fighter pilot does to counter the gs that you see the taking place on the screen. It was great work on the part of those who made the movie.

5:55 "Leaving your Wingman. There's a strategy I haven't seen in a while." Haha. This line carries weight. For those who don't remember, in the first movie, Maverick leaves his Wingman during training to go after a target. You can see that Hangman is a reincarnation of Maverick in spirit. This is reaffirmed when the song gets subtly louder as Hangman chases Maverick into the sun. Daltery's lyrics "Meet the new boss...... Same as the old boss...." hits us perfectly. This movie surprised me. It's well thought out and beautifully edited. I can't really say the same about the first one. It was a fun summer action movie at best.

As mentioned in a quote-on-quote 'official video' with this scene, it's worth noting that Rooster was already putting on his mask the moment Maverick said today's lesson is 'Dogfighting'. he definitely knew what maverick was capable of. i think the only reason he got 'killed' in the first few training days is because a. he wasn't used to dogfighting (they said the newer pilots didn't do it much) and b. it had been so long since he saw maverick fly.
@ThePointblank

@@jenna_baggett His callsign of 'Rooster' explains what happened; it is because he has a tendency to wait in a fight for an opportunity and be too cautious, much like how a rooster would wait for the sun to rise to crow. Best part about the "Chicken Spiral", Maverick knew Rooster's limits all to well and knew exACTly how to push him beyond those. It WAS working to the advantage of Rooster as, he had won the game of Chicken and got behind Maverick but, he just wouldn't take the last step and drop down to his altitude to and take the shot. I'm a former F-4 and F-16 pilot. Some of what you see here isn't the way it's really done but this is still a kick-ass scene for me. The aerial film work is incredible. I've always wanted to know from a genuine pilot... did you prefer the centre stick in the F4 or the side stick of the F16? For those who don't remember, in the first movie, Maverick leaves his Wingman during training to go after a target. You can see that Hangman is a reincarnation of Maverick in spirit. This is reaffirmed when the song gets subtly louder as Hangman chases Maverick into the sun. Daltery's lyrics "Meet the new boss...... Same as the old boss...." hits us perfectly. It helps when they had cameras in the cockpit. Cruise wanted that realism, and the producers agreed. Sold the flight scenes that much more convincingly, because they were as real as they could be.
As mentioned in a quote-on-quote 'official video' with this scene, it's worth noting that Rooster was already putting on his mask the moment Maverick said today's lesson is 'Dogfighting'. Once again, a good story with a strong finish wins the minds and hearts of the majority. Already a classic!
I love Hangman’s reaction when he looks back and sees it’s the same guy he ‘threw overboard’ in the bar scene that’s walking towards them to teach the class, the one and only Maverick! 😂

this scene just shows what its actually like to be a pilot like pulling gs and maneuvers etc. this is one of my favorite sequals better than the original but we all know that the original was the one that kickstarted the hight of practical filming. top gun maverick has the same practicality as the first film and has that 80s feel in the film while still haveing the modern film making equipment and the modern jets that where used.

i had very low expectations for this film, i am glad i did honestly because it blew that out of the water, i was blown away by how awesome this film is
7:10 I love how in this part, Maverick pulls both of his epic moves from the first movie of flying upside down just inches over another fighter and, suddenly hitting the breaks to get behind his persuer while also, Rooster takes flying over his head as a challenge to play Chicken by flying in a spiral towards the ground. Had he done just that much, it probably would have been Maverick on that tarmac afterwards instead...😩
Seeing Val Kilmer was very emotional, so so wonderful he was included at Tom's request. 2 great men.

And ever since then i really cant help but to be a fanboy, it feels like Cruise entered his own renaissance of movie making and im enjoying the ride.
