I caught Dallas on Amazon Prime. Knots Landing looks like is not on there (as of this comment post in April 2024). Found this video out of curiosity after I watched Dallas S3 Return Engagements last night for the first time.

I admire all of the vidoes you post because unlike most youtube channels. The view count you get after 24-48 hours from posting is what matters. For your stuff the view count after 1-2 years is probably the real metric!

Let me begin by saying thank you for doing what you do so well and please keep the humorous aspect of it in the mix; it truly adds to the splendor of it. Your analysis is so spot on and between Dallas and now Knots Landing, you have some of television's best material to work with...Briefly, I discovered both shows watching them with my mother and was pleased seeing her enjoy it so much. Dallas is my favorite, but like Knots Landing (KL) it peaked for me about it's 6th/7th season. One of the best attributes KL had was none of the regular characters ever got recast and it remained character driven from its inception until its conclusion. I believe in time it surpassed Dallas in the ratings because KL stayed steadfast to what it was about, whereas when Dallas peaked, it's plan was to take on Dynasty by going with the glam/shock value element in constantly trying to one-up each other. I think KL's success can also be attributed, in part, to more dramatic storylines as the series became more soap-opera like, garnered more critical acclaim and the gradual inclusion of newer characters to interact with the original cast worked well.

Thank you for watching! It's interesting how a lot of us have memories of the shows from watching them with our families. Lot of nostalgia for Dallas and KL.

"Knots Landing" was actually created first (at least on paper), but CBS asked the producers to go back and create something more saga-like and that's when "Dallas" was conceived. It was after "Dallas" showed such promise that "Knots..." was given the green light.

True! Knots Landing was based on Ingmar Bergman's "Scenes from a Marriage" (which was recently updated for HBO.) Producers pitched KL, which the network was lukewarm to but eventually got workshopped into Dallas, which was far different in terms of scope. Once Dallas took off, David Jacobs pitched back the original vision he had with Gary and Val, and the network was much happier to take the risk with a spinoff.

I always thought it would have been interesting if Bobby and Pam would have spent at least half a season in Knots Landing or if Kristen would have spent more than one episode there after shooting JR. She stirring things up in just on show. I loved when they crossed over the two shows. Karen’s Pollyanna speech is a classic

Pamela getting divorced from Bobby and moving in with Gary and Val would have been some great television. The big thing that always bothered me though is that, after all the hoopla about Ellie buying the house because she needs Gary in her life, she never visits.

I never watxhed these shows when they originally aired cause i was too young but i watched Dallas on tnt in the 90s but i didn't get into knots landing until soapnet on 2001-2002. And i loved it. I loved how the show evolved from the 70s disco kenny era through the 80s lotus point stuff and then ending with a very 90s office feel with the Sumner group.

Bear in mind, prior to this Val was a waitress who mainly worked at diners in rural and lower income areas. Living in KL around college-educated professionals was a huge step-up for her and was therefore quite overwhelming. Her feeling out of place would be a theme throughout the first 2 seasons.

Thank you so much for covering Knots Landing. I'm a massive Dallas fan. Only started watching it during the final season (I was 9!) And then went back and watched earlier ones and was hooked. Dallas is my obsession BUT when knots Landing is top of it's game, I've got to admit, it's better than Dallas. It doesn't get the love it deserves!

You are correct. I think it's after season four of KL that they decide to ignore Dallas. And yes, Karen Allen had a fine dreamboat run in the 80s prior to the Elisabeth Shue Administration.

It does since spoilers if you somehow find the show somewhere and want to watch it. Valeen names one of her twins Bobby after Bobby because he is dead and they never talk about Uncle Bobby again.

That's the way I was at first. It seemed pretty low-stakes compared to Dallas, but that's also part of its charm. At least early on, it's much more middle class with more Interpersonal problems instead of wheeling and dealing.

I bought a bootleg of the complete series (better than nothing) it takes a while but around season 3 is when it starts getting interesting and seasons 4-6 is the show at it's peak in terms of engaging plots and character motivation particularly Valene. I really love it. I'm just happy Falcon Crest can easily be streamed (If only they can do Flamingo Road.

The first 3 years of Knots are a slow watch admittedly. Although it always had fantastic acting and quality scripts, it wasn't until early in the fourth season when the show becomes serialised that it started to become gripping stuff. Seasons 4 to 7 of Knots Landing are amongst the best television ever produced and the remaining 7 years afterwards are also highly watchable and certainly much better than the last 7 years of Dallas. The show is available elsewhere on KZread and I highly recommend watching it. If you struggle to get through the first 3 seasons, then start with Season 4. You won't be disappointed.
