Pilot Metropolitan Fountain Pen | Budget Excellence

It’s official - I really really like this fountain pen. I never thought I’d see the day that I was a fan of a fountain pen, but this Pilot Metropolitan is so good, and so budget friendly. I got mine in a “first timer” kit from The Goulet Pen Company.

Hi Sean, I am happy you are enjoying your Pilot Metropoliltan. How does the ink get to the nib tip, underneath the steel nib is a plastic peice called a feed, and a channel for the ink to flow is cut into the feed and the ink flows by capulary action. If you every want to try another fountain pen I recommend the TWSBI ECO with a extra fine or fine nib size ( find the nib nook in the Goulet website and you will find a writing sample for every pen they carry with each nib width), this pen is a piston fill so you would need a bottle of ink, total cost around 43.00. Clean your pen every time before you put in a new cartridge. Put the converter back in the pen and use to flush water through the nib so your pen will not clog. THANKS for a well done video.

Let me just say when it comes to fountain pens. Do not skimp on good paper. Let me say this again. Do not skimp on the paper the paper is what makes or break the fountain pen. I do not mean braking physically the pen. I just mean your writing experience will be way more better with good paper. The paper you have now and the ones you ordered are perfect I say perfect. The company you got your pen and stuff from are to me the best and not to mention great people at that. They also have a KZread channel great learning and tips and tricks.

Hey, thanks so much for watching! The gentlemen who recommended this to me did explain the importance of the paper and you’re absolutely right. When I wrote on some store brand printer paper the experience was garbage compared to using the pad from Rhodia! I had a great experience with Goulet and can see why they come so highly recommended. Thanks for letting me know about their YT channel - I just subscribed. Thanks again for watching, all the best!

I'm into fountain pens and have been for a very long time, and I strongly encourage you to give it a shot. Fountain pens have a lot of advantages over traditional ballpoints and rollerballs in that you can choose your own ink, your own pen, and your own paper and really customize your writing experience. Second, using fountain pens is more economical and environmentally friendly than using disposable pens, because they're refillable and can last a very long time if you look after them well. Thirdly, many cheaper ballpoint and rollerball pens require pressure to write, which can tire your hand out over time. Fountain pens, on the other hand, require little to no pressure to write, which means you can write for longer periods of time without your hand cramping up. Yes, fountain pens are a little more maintenance, but if you stay with the hobby you'll find that it can become a very therapeutic, calming, and satisfying aspect of the whole experience of using them.

I actually look forward to paper work and writing with my fountain pen .

I like the ballpoint pens by pilot, I've rarely ever used fountain pens. It's nice they included refills and equipment for using bottled ink. I could never see myself using bottled ink. Also I've now gained pen vocabulary thanks to this haha. It's a very fine point, quite neat. My understanding of the ink flow is of the split in the channel allows ink to flow as a result of pressure placed on the nib. The model may be different than what I've used but that's the principle I'm familiar with. Interesting to see you turn into a calligraphist, Sean haha. Thanks for the video! Peace

USE THE CONVERTER! jajajaja I have a Pilot Metal Falcon, love it, but not quite first-timer pricing. For a first time budget pen, I'd go with the TWSBI Eco. It's not quite as conventional looking as the metropolitan, but has a built-in converter, large ink capacity, and writes super smooth. Also comes in a 1.1mm stub nib if you were curious to try something different. Edit: okay, now I'm seeing the other folk who beat me to the punch. Well, I'll just add my recommendation to theirs!

I just picked up my first one about a month ago (from Amazon) and went with a MUJI aluminum body that’s actually very sleek looking imo. It comes with 1 cartridge ($18.80). I also bought a universal ink converter ($5.59) and some waterman ink($11.29). Or they sell the cartridges if you wanted to keep using those (again waterman are around $5-6 depending on color for 6ct). It seems to be a fine tip also, but I’m also new to fountain pens so what do I know lol. I would like to get a flex nib at some point in the future and play around with calligraphy, but that won’t be for a while.

The Pilot Metropolitan is a great first fountain pen. Like you, I lack self-control, so I will just say that in my experience fountain pens and folding/pocket knives are rather similar. The point of diminishing returns kicks in a $150-$200. I started both hobbies at relatively the same time and now have too many inexpensive but serviceable pens/knives that don't get used enough because I was trying to figure out what I liked. If you find the Metropolitan works for you, try the TWISBI Eco (my experience with the TWISBI Go has not been good). I'd also suggest a Kawco sport for a small pocket pen and a Conklin Duragraph so that you can see whether you like a wider grip section. (The Durgaph nibs are iffy however.) After that, look at a pens in the next level like the Platinum 3776 or Pilot Vanishing Point that has a nock/click mechanism like ballpoints. Like one of the other commenters said, always have good paper. Rhodia, Clair Fontaine, and Maruman Mnemosyne notepads have all served me well. The Black and Red notepads at Staples are not bad.

I have a Pilot Metro and a TWSBI ECO. Even though I like the aesthetic of the Metropolitan better, the ECO just writes so freaking smoothly that I have to use it. Some people like a bit of haptic feedback though and the Metropolitan writes a bit scratchier. Japanese pens also tend to be a little finer (i.e. a Japanese "medium" may be a European "fine")

I enjoyed the review. I can understand your hesitation regarding the pen. I also tend to go crazy on new things. I never tried fountain pens as I heard they smeared on the paper when you wrote. Plus heard you wind up with ink all over your pinkie if lucky enough to avoid getting it all over your hand. Maybe that is what the fancy French paper is for to prevent getting it on your hand. Have I been misled or was that the case but no longer??

  • @GearedTowardGear1

Hey Rick! So far I have not had one isie with ink getting on my hand/fingers (other than when Ineas filming this video, lol). The ink will smear if rubbed shortly after writing. I would imagine a left handed writer would have problems using a fountain pen. I actually tested this twice with a stopwatch and the ink is dry enough to rub your hand or finger across without smearing after 15 seconds. If you rubbed it sooner than 15 seconds it will smear slightly bit not terribly. This could be in part due to the paper being used. Having said that, a 6” x 8” notepad of this paper costs $6.50, which is quite reasonable for the quality, even when compared to something like an equivalent sized “rite in the rain” notepad and cheaper than something like a moleskine notepad.

I've never known anyone who actually liked ballpoint pens. I find it really, really weird. I've used dozens of brans of ballpoint pens, and not one of them was as good as a dull stick in dry dirt. Almost as bad, the ink selection sucks. You can get more than fifteen hundred shades and types of ink for a fountain pen, along with a writing experience that's a thousand times better than any ballpoint pen. Even gel pens are a hundred times better than any ballpoint pen. Some gel pens are better than others, of course, but even the bad ones are better than ballpoints. Sorry, but it just stuns me that there are people who actually like ballpoint pens. You're cutting yourself off from a world of pleasure, from the best possible writing experience possible, and all for a type of pen that only exists because of young school children, and so people can sign receipts. .
