Pillars of Eternity Review

Ойындар

Obsidian Entertainments Pillars of Eternity has been on my radar for a while now, and although I’m about 4 years late, I’m definitely glad I went back to give it a shot.
While Obsidians gaming catalog is quite small, there’s no arguing that they have released some pretty incredible titles, including Knights of the Old Republic 2, Never Winter Nights 2, and Fallout New Vegas.
Back in 2012, Obsidian started up a crowd funding campaign for Pillars of Eternity with the intention of it being a spiritual successor to Boulders Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape Torment. Not only did fans pledge 4 million dollars into this project, but at the time, it ended up being the highest funded crowd funding campaign ever!
If you’re a fan of these old school style cRPGs, then Pillars of Eternity will not disappoint.

Nice review man recently jumped into pillars myself a d loving it honestly. Gonna get the dlcs and beat them then straight into dead fire. Dead fire looks amazing but had a troubled launch. I here most of the issues are fixed now though so I can't wait 😎

I remember I got so invested in this game from the prologue alone. I so wished that once I met Eder, that he could be romanced. Sadly, that wasn't possible. Though I heard that it is possible to romance him in the second game? (I just looked it up - he's one of the few you cannot romance! Damn, it's Alastair all over again!!!!) The rebuilding the Keep part of this game reminded me a little of Suikoden. It made me very happy.

Thank you for the review. Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 are on sale on steam right now & while I've always expressed interest in the game I wanted to make sure that it''s worth my time & money. Looks like it is.

I'm looking through some games to get stuck into and came across this due to looking at Baldurs Gate 3 (which I think I will wait until it's actually finished). I'm sort of put off a bit with the fact you mentioned they have only voiced some of the story? How the hell can you raise 4 million from the fans and not complete the game with voice in the year 2015!?!? How lol? Makes me think a lot of that money slipped out elsewhere.

4 Million isn't enough to make a game like Pillars of Eternity, let alone with full voice acting. Pillars of eternity has about 1 million words of dialogue(Equivalent to 100s of hours of voicework.). Games of this scale just are never voiced and Usually AAA games with full voice work are built on north of 40 million dollars and have closer to 10,000 words of voiced dialogue. The sequel 'Pillars of Eternity deadfire' and Larian's Divinity Original sin 2 though both have full voice acting. A mammoth task as both games have more than 1,000,000 spoken words. There are very few games I'm aware of that massive which are voiced. For comparison in 2003 Bioware's KOTOR 3 had about 370,000 spoken words(significantly less than the unvoiced Baldur's gate 2 which had over 1 million in 2000). The Witcher 3 had less than 500,000 spoken words. Dragon Age origins and Inquisition between 700,000 and 1,000,000 words and the Mass effect games significantly less than that. Hades recently had about 300,000 and Dark souls less than 20,000!. You'll notice that besides Hades, most of these games had 60+ million dollar budgets. Besides POE2 and DOS2, Only the director's cut of Disco elysium, Fallout 4 and Baldur's gate 3 when it's finished(probably in excess of 1.5-2 million words) that I'm aware of have near or over 1,000,000 words of voiced dialogue. So full voice acting for a roughly 1,000,000 words long script is hardly a fair expectation on a 4 million dollar budget. Many 40+ million dollar japanese games have limited or no voice acting at all even in their native language

Boo R For me, absolutely. Each companion feels like they have a good reason to travel with you and thus feel much more a part of the story. In the first PoE, most of them seem to follow you just cause, but in Deadfire they are with you because of their history with you, political reasons, or have agency directly with the main story. If you appreciate the lore form the first game, everything involving the gods is vastly built upon and you get way more in depth on how they think which I like. But the biggest thing to remember is to regularly sail around and do quests rather than try to do everything in the big city. Their is so much content in the main city alone for every level so it’s easy to get burnt out and bored of the town. If you explore often and only return to the main city to deliver completed quests and pick up new ones, the gameplay loop is infinitely more fun

i am currently playing this game on the ps4. purchased it for $12 or so off psn. as much as i currently enjoy the game and the story, i cannot with good faith recommend this game to anyone. this is due to the loading screens. i have never seen so many loading screens. everywhere you go theres a loading screen. and sometimes the loading screens can vary. it can be quick or it can take a minute. more than half the time will be spent looking at a loading screen. i cannot fathom how a game of this magnitude have so many loading screens and something the size of assassins creed odyssey have very few.

I think the first poe is one of the best cRPGs ever made. Even put it above ps:T since ps:T has a little too much reading. Only issue poe has is the edgy backer characters standing around all over, you got mods for that though

I hear more and more people saying "puhLLEdin" these days, as opposed to the correct "PAladin". I really don't understand why people do this. It sounds just as stupid as "exetera". Also, if you think it was annoying for companions attacking enemies on sight after positioning them, turn off party AI?

I really liked your enthusiasm and energy you put into this review. Your conclusions - not so much. I think you gave this game too much credit. I was a backer for Pillars 1 and this game taught me to never put money into kickstarters ever again. In the kickstarter the devs made some pretty unreasonable promises, like: - this will be the spiritual successor of the infinity engine games -- this alone got them the money, since most pledgers including me expected a Baldur's Gate type story with good old D&D like gameplay. - there will be a huge(ly boring) dungeon in the game - you can build you own fortress (the BG2 fortresses were so much better) Granted, it's not an easy task to make a game that can match up to those giants like Planescape Torment or Baldur's Gate 2. Whoever tries must overcome 3 major problems: - setting - rule set / game systems - writing / plot The forgotten realms setting is well established in novels and Planescape Torment has enough dialog to at least give the player an idea about the setting - or if you are a DM you can just get the boxed 2nd edition planescape set. Compared to that Pillars has an original setting, so it has to do the world building from scratch. I have completed the game twice and i was not impressed with it. I cannot put my finger on it, but the world just feels boring and generic. So, the setting is mediocre, but the game can still be good if the gameplay is enjoyable. Unfortunately the gameplay is garbage and mostly because of their home-brew rule system. Here are some of the highlights: - no pre-buffing, which was a major feature in the other infinity engine games - no hard counters like Death Ward vs Finger of Death - no instant kill / save or suck spells either; of if you have a spell that disables it has suck a short duration that there is no reason to remove it, since it will expire right before you could cast any counter spell (which doesn't exist by the way) - in combat most buffs have a very short duration - stealth is annoying, but can be exploited - you can attack multiple opponents at the same time with the reality bending engagement system, a system that would make sense in a turn based game to simulate attacks of opportunity (only if you use an action point system to simulate the time spent on the action), but since we have a real time combat system the whole thing is borderline retarded and can be used to conveniently establish a front-line - since engagement fucked with encounter design they had to add teleporting enemies that teleport to your back-line to introduce some artificial difficulty -- which only lasts for the first few encounters, then you adjust your play-style expecting it - spells and combat abilities are utter garbage compared to the infinity engine games - itemization is bland and boring - combat is either too easy or becomes a drag on the hardest difficulty (still not hard, just annoying) - the devs where saying that the attribute system will solve the dump stat problem, but my characters still have dump stats - it just depends on the build - muscle wizards ... I could go on, but in summary i did not like the rule set of this game. So the world is mediocre, the combat sucks maybe the story can save it. Nope, what a good story needs is personal stakes, but here i never felt any involvement at all, just went with the flow. So while i did not agree with your review, i will check out your other videos, because the presentation style was great and you seem like a cool dude.
