Pedda ZZ Wait, are you saying you think the Divinity narrator is better than Ashley Johnson in this? Because if so, I cannot comprehend how. The Divinity narrator is terrible and comes across as whiny and annoying and just far too whimsical or silly, like a lot of the voice work in Divinity. At least this narrator sounds invested and serious as if what she's saying actually matters. It has weight to it, gravitas. Keep in mind I've never played the game and only seen gameplay online but I have played Divinity Original Sin 1 and seen gameplay from 2. The voice acting in that game was one of the worst things for me alongside the hammy dialogue and poor story. I couldn't take anything seriously in it whatsoever. Gave me no reason to want to continue playing the first game as I got tired of just combat. I can understand VA being bad in these games in the sense of "You can read faster and it slows it down significantly when there's tons of text" so if that's the problem, then yeah but from what I've seen the voice work of the narrator at least is far superior than Divinity's. I guess it just depends on what you're looking for in the game.

+Jhakaro I was talking about D:OS2 idk about 1 and I also don't care D:OS2 narrator was awesome and the voice acting was also pretty good regarding the narrator from PoE2 it was pretty weak she always talked in the same tone and it was not that bad but it got tiresome after a while the narrator of D has a wide range of emotions in his voice-acting and I never get tired of it as it is I am not an expert and I also don't really care much fact is most people love the narrator from D:OS2 as much as that is worth

It's like comparing apples and oranges here when it comes to these narrators. Both of them fit their respective games, DOS2 being a more lighthearted experience that takes itself less seriously, and Pillars 2 being more like traditional classic crpgs like baldurs gate (pretty serious). DOS2's narrator has more room to vary in the expression of his narration, whereas Pillars 2's narrator has to adhere to the serious setting, coincidentally meaning her expression during her narration remains mostly the same to maintain the intended atmosphere. Pretty much pointless comparing the two games, probably would be easier to compare say pillars 2 and baldurs gate.

Oh man you completely bought me with your Pallegina commentary. I'm so glad I'm not alone in realizing that her character is a downgrade from PoE1. I feel sad on how she's rewritten to be made an one-dimensional Republic fanatic wherein the previous game she's shown to be conflicted with her own morals and her duty to the ducs. A lot of her depth is just thrown under the rug to fit the zealous Paladin stereotype (and for her to be a VTC representative), than to use the chance to explore her complex history and reason for her unhealthy devotion to the Republics - as it was said before the release of Deadfire, that there will be more options to flesh out the characters... I feel cheated honestly. Thanks for voicing our concerns dude 👍.

I'm a very visual person in some ways, so when I see a woman covered in feathers I'm just like ... no. Interestingly, _no_ sums up my reaction to all the characters and the game as a whole. I cannot believe anyone would consider this as having a good story or writing. For example, the dialogue alone is terrible compared to say, the Witcher 3. I've never seen so much infodump in a video game, and Pillars 1 is even worse. None of the factions were interesting either. I see similar issues in the Outer Worlds, although at least that game sold better due to its first-person format. Obsidian really needs to get its act together.

Which is interesting because both Sawyer and Avellone were always very loudly saying that if they did romance they'd only do it if it served the plot. And Chris in particular saying he didn't do much of it because he didn't think he wrote it well. So you had either wink and nudge gentle flirts like KOTOR2, or an actual deep lore dive as romance, like Mask of the Betrayer (which worked well, imho). Then CA leaves, and Sawyer is checking out, and you get...this. It's drivel. Absolute brothel lines everywhere that add nothing and do nothing to endear the character. It's some of the worst dialogue Obsidian has ever produced.

TBF. It harkens back to how the NCR are the "best" option but are far from being the absolute good faction. I actually like how the "Natives" faction aren't some do-goody, innocent, tribe archetypes who were conquered by the... Oceania Man... let's say. Or the other blue people. When worse comes to worse, revolutions happen and they are a bloody affair irl. It would be really trash imo if they were just victims all game and defending their rightful territory through only "just" methods. That's avoiding the messy nature of colonialism where tribes feast on others or do horrible things to the civilians of the conquering people as vengeance for atrocities done to them.

A Better Tomorrow I know this is an old comment but that was *precisely* my feeling. Support the colonial occupiers and you support a measure of meritocracy and prosperity. Much more interesting.

Which was always the reason why I liked the factions. Each side had a lot of baggage. At least in fantasy we get to explore what would happen if the Aztec Empire could cast fireballs in response to gunpowder weapons and disease. Its honestly one of the more unique settings... something of which I noticed Obsidian tries for at the very least even if its not always executed well. Fantasy North Korea comes to mind.

On the contrary, peak concurrent players is a good metric to use. The problem with PoE2 is that multiple DLCs were announced and the game needs serious polish. I would put my coin purse on a lot of people waiting to buy the game until after everything has been resolved and all DLC released in a complete package. Developers and publishers for years have been training people to wait until the GOTY or Ultimate Edition before buying, especially if you want to play a long RPG for the complete experience.

In a similar way the reviewer finds flaws within the games, people can find flaws within his review. Accusing people of brigading because they dislike or disagree with something is childish. Games are subjective, so are reviews, and the only 'correct opinion' is that which you think is more relevant for your own personal standards. Also, a game "bombing" is a bit of a weird metric to use if we are talking about perceived quality of the product. There are plenty of games with over 10 times the number of buys, but that also have mixed user reviews. PoE on the other hand, has generally positive reviews and has critical acclaim. The quality of the game obviously has an influence on number of buys, but that seems more like a marketing win than anything else. Edit: To be clear, I'm not saying the review isn't worthy of praise or that the creator shouldn't be proud of putting that many hours into compiling footage and writing out his thoughts. What I mostly take issue with is this masturbatory notion that only negative reviews are honest, and anyone that disagrees with these 'honest' reviews are brigading children. Reading thorought the comments you can already see people shaking with excitement in having their (minority) opinions about the game being validated and labeling people who believe otherwise as fanboys.

@@keithbrown2711 the game did in fact bomb. As of September, total worldwide sales was just 110,000 copies. The break even point is 580,000 copies. One of the game's investors released those number because of how upset they were with their dividend payment of just 19% of what they invested. The game has no chance of breaking even. As someone who likes reading and skim-reads even in the old Fallout or Baldur's game, I still think they could've scrapped VA for a better third act at least. For me I loved the combat over PoEI, but I cringe when I start picking up on story inconsistencies and exposition. All points are valid! Very good review. It's really a shame that PoE2 looks technically so much more polished than PoE1 but still ended up an inferior game. Some things will get fixed in the long run (bugs and difficulty), some might get fixed with DLCs (dungeons, ship battles). Others like the overall weak story, the ending, rest mechanics and dialogue will probably be out of scope for post-production fix.

I think AI mode is an essential addition, even for some fans of the old Infinity Engine games. I enjoyed the BG trilogy and, even though I didn't 100% click with the gameplay, it was manageable because a) a well-built CHARNAME can do all the heavy lifting & b) spells are big effects that you're not meant to spam constantly. In Pillars/Pillars 2/Tyranny, neither of those are true, which vastly increases the amount of micro, even compared to the old Infinity Engine games. Worse, the party AI in Pillars 1 was braindead, worse than BGEE.

To be honest, I think Obsidian made game too much as something they wanted - while playing I don't feel any real agency, more like Watcher is a tool of the gods/factions - like they wrote the story for their beloved NPC and then added player character as witness.

They just got rid of immunities that plagued the first game. Like, that fight with 10 skeletons where you can't win because your main damage dealer, a rogue with a shotgun, deals piercing damage, and skeletons are immune to it. But without each and every shit immunity to something it became too easy, because balancing was skipped.

Overall I preferred pillars 1. The second has a way too short a story and it's bland. The side quests are more interesting, but you do so many of them to level up that you forget about what you need to do for the main quest, or why you should care about a giant god stampeding in the ocean, as he doesn't seem to impact anything. As you say, admirable effort improving some things from the first game, but the story is so short and basic... that it ruins any interest about the overarching setting It's not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but after the great story of the first... you expect as much for the followup, especially from Obsidian. The game drags on by the end and not in a good way like witcher 3 does

Pillars 1 felt better to me as well, it felt more focused and like Obsidian just wanted to make a solid crpg. I found with poe2 I had sooo many quests at once that I didn't care about the stories of any of them. Instead, my quest log was like a check list, where I would go from place to place completing them for completions sake

Well articulated. I agreed on many of your points. I never played the first Pillars, so that may skew many of my feelings for the sequel. I find the beauty of the game to be astounding. I liked the difficulty, to an extent, but there were many times that the "type" of character I started with was so underpowered, that even with a teammate or two that could fight in melee combat, I found the three of us suffering through replay after replay of the same thing until I luckily stumbled into a victory. Oddly, while I have similar problems in Pathfinder, I don't seem to mind them as much. I'm not sure why to be honest. I find both games comparably fun and interesting to me. Maybe its the voice acting...I thought I'd like not having to read the story and just sit back an listen. Instead, it seems all drawn out and I can't seem to care about the story Pillars 2 is trying to tell. Pathfinder seems less exciting by story-telling standards, but I am more interested in playing that game. Maybe its the familiarity that is killing my experience with Pillars 2. Having never played part 1, I am not as interested in my "watcher" character. I get the need to make everyone that plays the game feel like "the one", but I can't seem to get invested in being forced to be the focal point of the fight amongst the Gods. Whereas, in Pathfinder, it feels more like D&D to me. Hell, its practically the upgrade to Neverwinter Nights 2 I always wanted. Same spells, classes and feats, with enough new stuff or changes to the old to keep it interesting. Admittedly, I rushed into buying Pillars 2 because it looked like the D&D game I always wanted. It was close to be sure, and is STILL a wonderful game to me. But given both now as they both are, I find myself playing Pathfinder more and more. I die a LOT, but I don't seem to care about that. Why is that? I truly love the visuals from both games, the art is very creative and beautifully done. Pillars 2 has the potential for some amazing fights but always fell short. Maybe its the getting almost all your abilities back with little to no effort that bugs me so. In Pathfinder, I died repeatedly from an ambush while camping. It wasn't until MULTIPLE failed attempts that I realized why I was missing. It wasn't skill or level; it was my fault. I let my team get SO tired they had -6 or -8 scores to some of their physical stats! It crushed me to realize I let that happen by pushing them a little farther than they should have been pushed. Save scumming saved the day, but it was a well thought out approach to the game. It's what sets these two games apart so much. Still, I say never bad to have too many games, so at least I get all the DLCs from both (I always get the season pass just to be sure I get all the content eventually), so maybe the fixes and DLCs will change my mind and I will enjoy Pillars again. It had me for days, but as soon as I got a boat, I really stopped caring. I'll dust it off later this year and revisit it. Who knows? Maybe I'll get into it again.

I think playing the first pillars before deadfire is a bit of a double edged sword when it comes to the story. On the one hand your familiarity with the characters and lore makes these things more interesting and easier to get into, but on the other hand you have certain expectations and it can be easy to see the main story of deadfire as a let down, particularly is regards to the gods. Anyway thanks for the detailed comment, it's nice to read your thoughts on deadfire and pathfinder.

Too much of this game was different from the previous. The graphics overhaul while welcome, wasn't entirely necessary. As you the voice acting also a huge investment and yet, my only complaint on voice acting from POE1 was that characters would have voice acting for one page of dialogue, then none the next. The change in setting and plot was also very jarring to me. Introducing itself as a story about the typical 'chosen one' and their story of ascension in a medieval fantasy setting wasnt exactly revolutionary, but it came as something seamlessly familiar for fans of the genre. Never in my dreams would I have expected POE2 to be a pirate themed pilgrimage across exotic lands. Maybe it's just me but more of the same from POE1 with much needed improvements would have made for a better game. It deviated too much from what made the original great. Still I do force myself to do playthroughs from time to time, if only to be in Eora again.

Yeah. I'm not sure what Turn-Based is supposed to add to this, because the fights aren't tactically challenging enough to merit treating them like chess moves. Personally, I've never seen this as a hill to die on anyway. Most RTwP provides an end of round auto-pause option, which I use anyway. When things are going well, I just click through the pause. When I have to think, it pauses and lets me do so. The idea that this fixes bad pathfinding, or makes the fights more or less challenging by design doesn't wash. What makes Divinity's combat so good isn't turns as such. It's that you have as many options as you can dream up to deal with a problem. No 2 combats ever feel the same. But Witcher 3 can do the same thing in real time. And so did Dragon Age:Origins. Which to me had some of the most rewarding combat of any RPG. Turns don't matter.

I just didn't like this game. Something about it was off. The tone was so different than the first. It felt like it didn't take itself seriously and it also felt amateurish. The main story just felt tacked on. Like an excuse to be in the Deadfire. Even though the stakes were supposed to be high, it just didn't feel like they were. The companions acted like everything was a big joke and talked way too openly about sex which was lame because it was like Obsidian was trying mature but it came off as immature. I also didn't like the soundtrack either, a lot of it just sounded silly. There is something else too, I just can't put my finger on it. I don't know, it's just like the game wasn't made by the Obsidian we know, it's different. Not in a good way either. I'm disappointed and after this game I just think the Obsidian we knew and loved is no more.

It is because of that, most of the veterans that made obsidian what it was are there no more. With Obsidian you were sure that even if the game turned out to be a pot of technical and gameplay problems at least you knew the story would had something interesting to say. PoE is without a doubt the worst Obsidian game, because even suffering through the broken Alpha Protocol was worth for the story and the way it was told.

@@zzxp1 I agree with you. POE tried why too hard to be many things. It never found it's own identity. Plus the story was so dull and I'm honestly tired of serious, philosophical games that try to ask deep questions. Anything George Ziets(he wrote POE) writes is the same thing having do with souls, questioning religion, or both. Like dude, we get it. You're a spiritual and jaded aethist but do something less pretentious and sanctimonious. His most popular work was Mask of the Betrayer but if you look at the core the story it's the same thing. Souls and questioning religion lol. Anyways, I do agree most of the veterans from early 2000s Obsidian is gone, replaced with a younger hipster group.

I find it strange that they felt they needed to use sex to seem mature, the first Pillars game was mature enough on its own, dealing with political intrigue, tyrant lords, and fucking miscarriages on a national scale But no, to show that we're mature, let's put forth a bunch of childish sexual remarks, make it the only characteristic of a bunch of characters, and call it good writing, cause with this companies reputation for amazing stories, people will just eat up anything we write regardless of quality!

  • @MyKeyMoonShine
    @MyKeyMoonShine6 жыл бұрын

Many good points but some of this is a little unfair, for example one of the biggest complaints of the last game was that it was too grimdark and people struggled to get into it. Yeah there is a bit of cringe in this game but I think the slightly lighter tone is an overall improvement. I just think you can be serious and not dark and depressing at the same time, they went too far in the cheese direction at some points in the game but then this isn't as bad as something by bioware when it comes to that I guess. A lot of people also didn't like to do all that reading and wanted more voice acting. Larian got a lot of praise for doing almost full VO for Divinity OS 2 and I think Obsidian realised that if they didn't do that too the initial response would involve some comparisons to that game and criticism of them for being too cheap to do it or whatever. I do agree that the narrator is a problem because Pillars games are just far too wordy in general. We don't need two text boxes describing someone's face, we don't need every expression and movement a character makes explained what that is obvious from the words they actually say. This was a problem in the first game too that did turn a lot of people off only here the main story sections are narrated so you have to sit through someone else reading it rather than skimming it or just not reading it at all. This isn't a problem with VO this is a problem with writing, I get that they want to give those nostalgia feels with big chunks of text but it's really just unnecessary fluff most of the time. I don't think the difficulty issue is a bug, they just fucked it up. The beta patch (now an official patch) only fixes the leval scaling, the difficulty is apparently being fixed but they are still working on that. Pallegina's edgy atheism makes sense from her character and this is totally reflected in the last game, just bring her to the convo with Hylea in twin elms. I agree that her being a republics cheerleader is strange though and seems to be just because of the whole factions thing. The problems with the plot, lack of choice and player agency also exist in POE. The game doesn't really let you choose much or discover things for yourself it just leads you through Obsidian's story. Even the choices you get to make at the end are more or less negated by deadfire, non of them really result in anything so really both games have this same issue yet you criticise it here and praise it in POE. I would also rather the gods were more of a mixed bag. I like how contradictory and bad at their jobs they are I guess but I don't like how the game wants me to hate them. I think another delay would have harmed them as much as it helped them if not more, the first delay should have perhaps been longer. Though this game is still stable, plenty of other rpg's ship with broken quests. The game is too easy I agree and the import bugs sucked but other than that most everything worked for me.

Some like grimdark and some will expect a sequel to have a similar tone but i understand why they may have went in a different direction. My big problem was that i wanted the serious moments, like meeting the gods, to feel serious. You make some good points. However if your choices in PoE1 have poor consequences in deadfire that's the fault of deadfire. I actually made a short video on PoE1 and said i was worried with how they would be able to implement the consequences of your actions going forward, but at the time of finishing the first game it felt like choices had made a bigger impact and it was satisfying in a way Deadfire wasn't.

  • @MyKeyMoonShine

NeverKnowsBest I do agree that there were issues with the tone even if I feel a lighter tone makes sense in the setting so yeah I get that. Wael was very disappointing to me as well. I knew as soon as they gave you the choice to give the souls to Woedica that this was something they would never be able to provide realistic consequences for. Sadly I was right and it's barely even aknowledged in deadfire. You are right that those are a problem for deadfire not POE but I guess my point is those choices didn't really matter in POE because they affected nothing but ending slides. The game still didn't allow for much choice but I suppose the illusion of choice was better and in the end that's pretty much all a story based RPG can offer. Anyway thanks for taking the time to respond. Enjoyed your reviews of both games.

When i look at the ability screen (24:38) i cant help but note how little information is being passed on at first glance, due to the overuse of icons and not using words. Without hovering over all these icons, one by one, you dont get to know much at all from this screen. I can see which are the active and which are the passive abillities and that´s achieved by the use of *holdyourbreath!* language. The only icon i can tell its funtion must be a healing ability is because it uses a symbol which is rooted in the real world (aka breaking the 4th wall): a cross like the red cross. I can also tell there are 9 tiers of abilities. And that´s about it. Barring the bottom bar, there are 10 words on the screen, total, one being used three times ("ability/-ies") and two could have been sensibly replaced by symbols ("previous" >), which makes for a total of 6 unique words that are actually carrying information. There are also only 10 numbers on the screen, nine of which being constants. The rest is just glitter, basically. Imho the very minimum would be to label the abilities with names below (or on top, or whatever) their corresponding icon. I know all these icons look pretty and are very much en vogue with lots of games these days, but i think in a couple of years we will look at screens like this and ask ourselves: "What the hell were they thinking?"

Dear NeverKnowsBest, This game has since been patched many times and many DLCs were added. I think this game is much better than when it was launched (and in particular, the difficulty problem had been addressed a while ago). It has poor sales so far but I think considering the quality of the game now, it deserves a lot more. Can you do a review of the current (or future) version of the game? Maybe your opinion will be much more favorable. I was also disappointed with the game when it was first launched and didn't play it for about 6 months (since I was busy with work). I recently started playing this game again and I now have a very favorable view of it. (If the sales does not improve, there may not be a sequel for this series. Now Obsidian is acquired by Microsoft so poor sales of this game might force Microsoft to make Obsidian abandon this genre of games.)

I plan to replay it. Not quite yet but some time next year, and i'd like to make another video giving an updated look at the game plus covering the dlc, if i can find the time. I'm hoping with the difficulty fixed i'll enjoy it a lot more. I think i'll also update the video description to acknowledge that the difficulty problem should be fixed by now. As for sales, its hard to know exactly what they'll mean, but seeing as The Outer Worlds has been met with a huge amount of hype already, I worry a bit that obsidian and microsoft will react to that and stick to making that kind of rpg in the future. I kinda hope that we'll still get a pillars 3. There's a good chance because they put a lot of work into making the new engine, so hopefully abandoning isometric games completely won't make sense just yet. I have a feeling if we do get a pillars 3 it will be lower budget though, and things like full voice acting will have to be cut.

I'm that guy that much prefers fully voiced games, as long as the voice acting is good.... enough. I like the narrator in this title. It's no Baldur's Gate 3, but still good.

I can appreciate voice acting. I wouldn't want to read too much when playing a game, I already read all day at work:D

honestly, i didnt even realised that there where returning charackters at first. the elfe mage, i needet quite a while to remember, the only companion i remember from the first game with some clearety is that crazy priest, i do not remember his name tho, and some kind of dead lady, very hazy, i admit at one point i changed the whole party to self made charackters, they stimply did not grap my attention

Watching and playing 3 years later with game version 5.0 the plucked fruit quest still bugged for me... Importing went wrong with Pallegina too. Still, I very much enjoy the fights with the added turn based option. Though many things are questionable (Why is the majority of the people in power female? Even Berath swapped genders.) PoE 2 is a better game than the first title.

Seems some people don’t think the pirate island hopping is fantasy enough. Y’all really want textbook medieval done to death rigid fantasy every single time huh. I love that as much as the next guy, and I do like pillars 1 over 2, but really a change of pace is pretty damn welcome in fantasy setting crpgs. It’s like bloodborne bringing gothic/cosmic horror to the typical dark fantasy souls formula. Or something like different Final fantasy entries branching out from typical fantasy setting. We need these kind of departures.

I was about to get to the end of the game. Saw this video. Agree with everything. Literally not even going to bother finishing it now. The fact is the game left me feeling SO disconnected the entire time that I just don't even care anymore. Knowing how it ends makes me actually feel better I didn't finish it. I did all the side quests and am currently just finalizing faction choice. The game has gotten so boring that I usually start nodding off within 15 minutes of turning it on. No joke. I was greatly disappointed by many things in this game. I backed this at the $200 tier and from what it seems like, they still haven't gotten their shit together on the physical goods for backers.

I remember on release for the Xbox it was completely unplayable. Played it on steam with a few issues but it wasn't terrible. My single biggest problem was that the game just felt kind of meh. For some reason it didn't quite hook me the same way pathfinder WOTR or BG3 did.

Obsidian, you lost Chris Avellone and it shows. The lack of Chris's involvement in POE2 was almost as noticeable as Drew Karpyshyn in Mass Effect 3. Tyranny was a huge leap forward in their story-telling and world building, and POE2 was huge stumble backward.

@@jgooo101 I actually liked the grieving mother thing. The first game was more about the real world imo, grieving mother was a reflection of so many parents now living with "autistic" kids in the US I'd say. still playing thought the second game, it feels much more messed up storywise all over the place. just pushing myself to finish to know aht happens at the end

If we were to take something from the classics, Morrowind and Baldur's Gate in particular, is that you should voice only the things of importance, making sure the VA is quality over quantity. (even if it means same amount of work is being done in repeating one line or hiring the right man) Invest in a few wonderful harmonic songs for the starting area and menu. Dialogue for the few characters you start with should be memorable. (Imoen, Jiub, Minsc&Boo, Jaheira, Yoshimo... , Azura, Socucius Ergalla, Caius C) Voicing every line was definately overkill for me. Especially since size comparison: BG/Morrowind comes as a 1GB install, Deadfire? 44GB. You need 3 GB to install a classic, but 100-120GB to install Pillars of Et.:Deadfire (50+70 in folder) Morrowind has more lore and text and open world, unique Enchanting system/Soul Shards. BG2 has a tragic villain, class and spell combinations, a perfectly reasonable antagonist.
