Pileated Woodpecker Clings To Bottom Of Suet Feeder For A Snack - Feb. 28, 2024

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

The Cornell Lab FeederWatch Cam's largest woodpecker shows off its dexterity while clinging to the bottom of the suet feeder to extract a meal. Did you know that the feeding excavations of a Pileated Woodpecker are so extensive that they often attract other birds to the trees where they are eating? Other woodpeckers, as well as House Wrens, may come and feed there.
Watch LIVE at AllAboutBirds.org/CornellFeeders for news, updates, and more information about the pond and its surroundings.
This FeederWatch cam is located in the Treman Bird Feeding Garden at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. Perched on the edge of both Sapsucker Woods and its 10-acre pond, these feeders attract both forest species like chickadees and woodpeckers as well as some species that prefer open environments near water like Red-winged Blackbirds.
The Wild Birds Unlimited store at Sapsucker Woods has been a part of the visitor experience in the Cornell Lab’s Visitor Center ever since the new building opened in 2003. They are the preferred vendor of official Cornell Lab merchandise and offer a dizzying number of feeders, binoculars, and birdwatching-related gear and gifts to make any bird enthusiast happy. WBU has also pledged support for many of the Cornell Lab’s local efforts, including providing the bird feeders and food for this FeederWatch Cam.
The FeederWatch cam hardware includes an Axis P1448-LE camera with an an ETS ML1-WPW microphone.

It is impossible to convey in any video how impossibly cool these woodpeckers are. They're *huge* and when they flew over my head, it was a real WTF moment. 😂 I'll never forget that day.

We'd been hoping for literally years that they'd return to Northern Indiana, so when they arrived, it was fantastic. Not just one, either. A nesting pair in a large dead tree. Amazing.

I get them at tge feeder almost every day. Mine is so spooky. I'm inside on the couch, if I move a muscle he spooks. When I was canoeing on the river, they didn’t seem to mind me at all.

Getting to this video late. Pileated is clinging to the bottom of the suet feeder because there's only a small amount of suet left, not because of its huge size. Cornell, can you please attend to the suet feeder more. I try to watch when the food is put out every day, and I'm always pleading for more suet. It's important year-round, but especially so in cold weather and for woodpeckers. The starlings always decimate the suet too. And, as you can see here, they're not scared of anyone, including Pileated. The racoons are getting in at night, and the suet feeder is crooked because of that. It would be great if you could also add a new piece to the feeder with the large top. It's still nearly empty on 3/6. Thank you!
