Pilatus PC-6 Porter

Ғылым және технология

It's big, draggy, and as useful as a Swiss Army knife. We put the Pilatus Porter to the test.

    In the movie, Air America, is where I first saw a Porter fly. It's an amazing performer.

    The photo of this (yellow) airplane on the cover of AOPA pilot magazine shows that the fuel cap was not secured and was dangling off the end of its chain. Tried to see if that was visible in this video but couldn’t tell for sure.

    So the Quest Air Kodiak appears to be slightly smaller but looks to be very similar in mission profile and also has a PT-6. Why is the Porter so unique?

  • @patenteagosses

    @patenteagosses

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Kodiak is a bigger plane by 1000 pounds, a lot faster on cruse, but a lot faster on landing. So it can't touch the STOL capability of the Porter. And it is not a tailwheel, so ski operation is marginal at best. The kodiak is more a smaller caravan than a beffup Porter

    Not sure if the Kodiak has that option, but the Porter can have the prop in beta; so it can drop altitude like crazy while limiting it's airspeed efficiently; which can be very useful for a plane that has to fly in mountainous terrain with sloped airfields

    @@hivewasp when on floats, we have to be mild with that feature once waterlanded. The firts times i used the beta, the plane wanted to go left or right. Something we don't want on the water. Flipping can bite fast. The nose is so long that using the beta is like hitting soft sand with a wheelbarrow. Now i wait for the floats to be completely in the water before using the beta. Incredible docking capabilities with the beta and reverse. You can approach the dock sideway with alternate forward and backward movement and the water rudder.

    @@patenteagosses I can imagine, though as they said in the video - the floats are not a very common addition to the Porter. Still, this is an amazing little plane

    @@hivewasp Amazing in fact. When on skis, you always push a little ridge of snow in front of your skis when you park. This ridge of snow becomes hard during night. With the Pilatus, you can lock your tailwheel straight, and reverse a few inches. Two or three is enough. In the morning, no shovelling is necessary since you are away of the small ridge in front of your ski.

    The amphibious one of this video have internal tank of 170 gallons. The underwing tank have each 65 gallons for an additional 130 gallons. It burns around 41 gallons per hour if you don't want the nose to fly too high. 7.3 hours before the engine stops. At around 125 knots to the planet at 10000 feet. So around 750 miles without wind and keeping an hour reserve. If you fly higher, or less, the numbers changes naturally. You gain around 12 knots when on straight wheels. Speed on skis is between floats and wheels configuration.

    For the other model, you have two different wing capacity. The "normal" wing, the extended, and for some, the underwing pod. The normal is around 3 hours and a half. Total, no reserve.
