For what knew, the reason behind her suicide was the severe critics she received for having uncovered what was behind her step father. Though lots of people already knew Donoso was gay. There was nothing to hide, in here. According to what she reveals, the writer was an alcoholic mistreater who was basically paranoid about people discovering he was a gay. Can't see the drama in his life. Because to be a gay is not a reason to become an alcoholic mistreater. And to reveal the truth about a tortured mind, is nothing to be reproached. So, critics and her family shouldn't have behaved as they did with her. For me, it was all quite stupid, can't see the reason to be tortured for being a gay. It's obvious it has to be accepted if that's what you are. Since it's genetics and can't be denied nor changed. Silly to have to hide it. Although it is truth that humans developed a very stupid and hipocrit society that forced somehow, this people to have to hide it. And tried also to made them living this fact as if it was an inner "sin" or vice. Going as far as to call them "perverts". But Donoso real fear was to be reduced as being read as a gay writer, or, a "writer for gays". And so, to be less sold. Time has left him behind other latin american writers, think. But it's his novels, not only time, what made of him what's called an "style writer", or "experinwntal author". Something too often meaning difficult to be read or boring. Some of those "boom bubble" authors were mainly artists of a single important work. As can be Rulfo or Fuentes and his Artemio Cruz. Both have very good short stories also, but think with Artemio Cruz and Pedro Páramo they did their best. Maybe Donoso's work The Obscene Bird of Night is an important work, but consider El Lugar sin Límites his best. And this one is not a long novel. Found Vargas Llosa very boring and unimportant, excepting his La Ciudad y Los Perros and Los Cachorros y Los Jefes, maybe. Gabo did a relevant job with his Hundred Years of Solitude. But here again, the rest of his works did not left much of a footprint in my mind. Liked Onetti in his short stories, but for the ambiance they depict. For there's a lack of plots and action in this author. However, the use of language in Onetti found is remarkable. As every bubble, the latin american writer's boom wasn't perhaps so much, after all. As it seems, it could be reduced to three or four important books to be read and nothing more. And Donoso, can't tell if The Obscene Bird of Night will remain or not as a relevant book. Has to be said that I knew people who liked it. It's a complicated, uneasy, hard reading book. That for what it says, couldn't say if it has to be read or not. Also, maybe the "drama" Donoso was trying to hide wasn't such at all. And he should have not took it that way and so, lived a happier and better life. And anycase, the fact of being gay doesn't make you interesting and neither a great writer. Excuses for saying it in such a raw manner. He may be a better writer than what am saying here. And am not meaning he wasn't a good one, anyway. He knew his job, that's clear. But to remain as a main author is another thing. Already nowadays he's a bit forgotten, and this is a fact. The Latin American "boom bubble" was important because it opened a door to some other writers that think will remain, as Alan Pauls and his The Past novel. What found is a very good work that should remain, instead. Another thing to be added to all this, is that the picture Pilar paints so well, is that of a disgusting man and if this is a reason not to read a writer or not. Because it's obvious that quite often some of the writers are disgusting people, one way or another. Be it as it were, rest in peace PD and keep clear many people were unfair with her. Thanks for telling, Pilar Donoso. 🆗👍🙏
