Pikes Peak race car Ep5 - Wheels and wiring

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this episode we talk about wheels, wiring, cooling and spin up the Tesla motors in the car using the new wiring loom for the first time. Won't be long now until this little VW Beetle looking electric powered monster will be tearing up some tarmac.

ECC, on commercial aircraft those Wiring Standoff are 2-part epoxied to the structure. I think 3M DP420 is a common adhesive, it is extremely strong. Just clean contact surface really good. That would save the trouble of welding on nuts.

Wheel offset is a pain to work out. As you point out, it is what the wheel will rub against. Horizontal springs and shocks with a bell crank were the result of needing big wheels and upright suspension getting in the way. Another informative video, thanks.

Ahoy Richard, I happened to see an early episode of from this series that revealed you started with a Fun Cup car frame and skins. Question, could your Fun Cup Funny-Car finish a Fun Cup race? Not in the sense of going out in a blaze of glory but in the sense of having enough juice in the can to make it to the checkered flag? I love it that Richard and ECC are passionate about keepting the petrol-head hobby alive in the zero carbon age. Over here we've always used the term "motor head" so don't have to change for electrification. :)

Wonderful work but for the average guy I would always love to know what the cost is for these conversions. When you can convert an ICE car over to electric for say 20K or less. I can see many people doing this rather than buying a new electric car.

It's a pity about needing large offset outwards (and therefore scrub radius) on the front as it'll make torque steer worse and there's going to be a lot of torque! Is there the possibility of inclining the macpherson struts inwards more to gain some more room? Although this probably has other issues...

  • @ElectricClassicCars

@@ElectricClassicCars I understand you don't want to and you've a lovely billet hub and calliper bracket in there but is it worth considering using the audi rs6 or R8 front suspension? As these are most likely to be compatible with your existing hubs / bearings and brakes. Adapting the frame for this, whilst a step backwards now would IMO give a better more tuneable result later.

The production rate is a single variable, have you seen anything about Lunaz ? Their factory was featured on fully charged , they seem way bigger then these guys but their conversations cost way more. To go bigger means more investment, which means having to pay back the money which would probably mean picking a limited line of high value cars to convert. No quirky one offs or minis

I think something very similar has been done before. You may want to see what was discovered by road racing a TESLA Model S drivetrain. You should have pushed the technology to implement your first idea of using the dual motor carbon wrapped PLAID motors. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6GTqc2dZc7Zk9I.html

Some good info there but it's not news to me. Having built over 70 electric converted cars now I know first hand the thermal management challenges we've got to overcome with the battery and motor. That's why I decided on 3 battery packs in parallel to share the load so the thermal stresses should be 3 times less. We've also gone for a dual motor setup for the same reason, to share the burden of pushing it down the road. However, having said all of the above I still think the large rear motor is going to struggle to keep on top of it's temperatures. That's why the plan is to get this all working to a degree before the ultimate setup, which will be Plaid setup. 😁👍
