Pikes Peak race car Ep5 - Wheels and wiring
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
In this episode we talk about wheels, wiring, cooling and spin up the Tesla motors in the car using the new wiring loom for the first time. Won't be long now until this little VW Beetle looking electric powered monster will be tearing up some tarmac.

Mock up wheels and using the car body as a white board,Jason from Engineering Explained would be so proud.
Thankyou or sharing your Voltswagon misadventures. Tis a beautiful machine.
What a friggin' awesome project - thanks for taking us along for the build journey!
I love that you let us know the little details on how you are actually building it, please go over the battery boxes as well, really fun stuff. Thnx
Can't wait to see this car on the track! This is going to be amazing. Thanks for taking us along through the build, I have really enjoyed watching this project taking form.
Wow, great videos, you are the David Attenborough of the EV World👍🏾

It's going to be an impressive vehicle. It's always satisfying when something you've been making starts to work properly. Thanks Richard. 🙂👍
Exciting to follow this build!
Great video mate 👌
MONSTER 👹 🤟💯🇬🇧
Interesting voice over in post... 😉 Be sure to check the rotational direction of the cooling fans! You won't want to mix forced versus induced flow...
Looking AOK. I’m ready for blast off. Job brilliantly done.
It will work 😀
I can't wait to see the test drive! Your eyebrows will be at the back of your head when you hit that throttle 😂
It has been fascinating so far seeing this build, keep the content coming !
ECC, on commercial aircraft those Wiring Standoff are 2-part epoxied to the structure. I think 3M DP420 is a common adhesive, it is extremely strong. Just clean contact surface really good. That would save the trouble of welding on nuts.
👍
Flaming awesome, following your processes through, going to be insane.
Sooo much envy... soooo much. (Don't worry, not the bad kind). 😃
Could you consider doing a Tech Talk video about how the safety Earthing works, I’m guessing only the 12v system runs through the chassis?
Those mock-up wheels would be perfect for drifting 😂
Fantastic! This looks like an enormous undertaking to get it just right. Kudos!
Fantastic to see the progress you're making on this car!
It is looking good, rather than welding nuts to panels maybe use Rivnuts, though be careful with the drill overshooting (we have all done that).
Wheel offset is a pain to work out. As you point out, it is what the wheel will rub against. Horizontal springs and shocks with a bell crank were the result of needing big wheels and upright suspension getting in the way. Another informative video, thanks.
Love your work 👍
I’m really feeling this build so far 🔥🔥🔥 can’t wait for completion

Ahoy Richard, I happened to see an early episode of from this series that revealed you started with a Fun Cup car frame and skins. Question, could your Fun Cup Funny-Car finish a Fun Cup race? Not in the sense of going out in a blaze of glory but in the sense of having enough juice in the can to make it to the checkered flag? I love it that Richard and ECC are passionate about keepting the petrol-head hobby alive in the zero carbon age. Over here we've always used the term "motor head" so don't have to change for electrification. :)

Gotta love it when things don't go pop or fizz!

Always ideal when the smoke stays in the wires
I decided to keep stock wings when fitting Porsche wheels. Chasing every mm of clearance was quite the challenge. Unlike mine it looks like you should be able to achieve a good turning circle.

Have you incorporated chillers into the cooling loops for any of the conversions yet ? This could be a great test bed if not , being able to keep the battery temps in the sweet spot . Imagine model 3 track mode thermal management on this 🤯

Keep the focus Richard - Soon be Christmas and nothing delivers over Christmas except the Fat Man in the red suit. ( I don't mean the postie) LOL Got to get that on a boat by start of May 2023 Times a ticking.

Christmas holidays is when I get most free time in the workshop. 2 years ago I built my Landy, all in the Christmas holiday. 😁👍
Wonderful work but for the average guy I would always love to know what the cost is for these conversions. When you can convert an ICE car over to electric for say 20K or less. I can see many people doing this rather than buying a new electric car.
Richard, I mentioned it in a previous video: are you sure the steering geometry includes the requirements for Ackerman?
what would be awesome if you could get Tenhundred to paint the car.
I'll be back
It's a pity about needing large offset outwards (and therefore scrub radius) on the front as it'll make torque steer worse and there's going to be a lot of torque! Is there the possibility of inclining the macpherson struts inwards more to gain some more room? Although this probably has other issues...
@ElectricClassicCars
Жыл бұрын
I agree. We'll definitely have to see how the torque steer goes. 👍

@@ElectricClassicCars I understand you don't want to and you've a lovely billet hub and calliper bracket in there but is it worth considering using the audi rs6 or R8 front suspension? As these are most likely to be compatible with your existing hubs / bearings and brakes. Adapting the frame for this, whilst a step backwards now would IMO give a better more tuneable result later.
If you were a company or a big team putting out like a car a week, how much do you think the car would cost ?

The production rate is a single variable, have you seen anything about Lunaz ? Their factory was featured on fully charged , they seem way bigger then these guys but their conversations cost way more. To go bigger means more investment, which means having to pay back the money which would probably mean picking a limited line of high value cars to convert. No quirky one offs or minis
Where did you get the fiberglass body
Front and rear wheels are same diameter? There's no transmission to wind up, but a difference would puzzle motor controllers wouldn't it? I may have answered my own question already....!

The front and rear wheels are indeed the same diameter. 👍
Hi, would you be interested in some digital renderings of different colours/schemes of the car? I skin cars for racing sims as a hobby, the funcar is one of the cars I have available.

That's a cool job, thanks for the offer but we already have the render done for the chosen paint job. 👍
I think something very similar has been done before. You may want to see what was discovered by road racing a TESLA Model S drivetrain. You should have pushed the technology to implement your first idea of using the dual motor carbon wrapped PLAID motors. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6GTqc2dZc7Zk9I.html

Some good info there but it's not news to me. Having built over 70 electric converted cars now I know first hand the thermal management challenges we've got to overcome with the battery and motor. That's why I decided on 3 battery packs in parallel to share the load so the thermal stresses should be 3 times less. We've also gone for a dual motor setup for the same reason, to share the burden of pushing it down the road. However, having said all of the above I still think the large rear motor is going to struggle to keep on top of it's temperatures. That's why the plan is to get this all working to a degree before the ultimate setup, which will be Plaid setup. 😁👍
I understand all that wheel stuff, wiring etc......but how the hell you make Elon's gear working at your command?
