Went Texas pig hunting with a friend here in the states. Just a word of warning to any novices out there, you bloody well be in good shape if you want to go pig hunting with dogs. I wasn't & it almost killed me. I now have a healthy respect for rough terrain pig hunters. Definitely not a sport for couch potatos or the faint of heart. Enjoyed the video!

Epic Spearfishing NZ Cheers mate.

I went back to hunting after ten years of not, super hard to start out but hunted 4 nights a week struggled for a year ended up with two insane finda baillers. best run of pigs was 15 hunts 15 boars over 100lbs up to 198 lbs. Any young guys starting time on the hill is what it takes

There never use to be many pigs on the coast 30 years ago but today there are enough for sustainable hunting

+Edz Hanlon I am using 3 different boots. Any thing made with goretex is normally top shelf footwear. It all depends on what dollars you can afford to spend. If your wallet is not so fat it pays t o look on trademe. There are heaps of people out there who think the yare going to get into camping tramping * hunting ...they buy all the flash gear and then 3 months later find they are not cut out for it and then try to flog all theirnew gear off on line

Ive been for a few pig hunts before with a few mates the are very experienced but have got nothing and they told me that im bad luck haha is there anything that you think could take away my bad luck?

It is quite a big process. There are plenty of clips on how to tan a hide if you have one ready to tan. I will do a video some time in the future though so stay tuned.

Here in Hawaii , we use 22 mags or m1 carbines because they would be light , some use 30-30 or 44 mags. NZ sure looks a lot like Hawaii.

Yes , some of the places you hunt are beautiful . Did allot of hunting all my life from the age of 5 years i'm 54 know. My whole family are pig hunters . I have been out of the game for a few years, but watching you have put pig's back in my brain. Keep up posting those great video's.. God bless Aloha.

Awesome. I would love to hunt in Hawii one day. I caught a fat wee boar yesterday with the dogs. I will post that hunt up on the first Tuesday of next month. I am 52 so we are not that far apart in age brother.

Yes time sure went fast was 20 last week this week fifty ! lol . Yes one day come hunt . we have goat's , sheep , mouflon , pig's and on the other island's black tail deer, and axis deer. A couple of guy's brought some axis deer over from Maui to the big island where i'm living so we had something different to hunt, well the state people had a stroke and made a big deal about it. The two guy's payed thousands in fine's and the state tried to kill it all . Well they tried i heard that there around yet. Aloha.

This clip is just for starting off hunting with dog & knife. We don't use sent cover as our dogs are working and have their own sent. Wind is always a big factor. These question here that you ask are valid for this clip though...where do they like to graze? what are signs of traffic? Pigs are Omnivores so feed across a wide range of ground. The are opportunist feeders. The main signs we look for is fresh rooting and a good mark showing the due claw. Tree markings or at least rubbing from pigs are other signs. Reading your comment has me thinking maybe I should make a more in depth video on the topic. Good luck with your hunting.

I have hunted pigs with just a rifle. I have caught pigs in pig traps. Just like most wild animals you can track them and hunt them. You don't need a dog. A dog is just better than tracking than a human. Having pig dogs is like having a pack of tame wolves all working for you.

Yes I do. Private hunting guides are all over NZ. I take a few people out pig hunting. Most prices start around 300 per day and go up depending on what animal you are hunting. I know a couple of guides and also do a bit of guiding myself.

Take a trip down to some bay pen competitions.There are people who sell pups and start them in a pen on hogs.Book a hog dog hunt.They are cheap and you will learn a lot.

Maybe there is a hunter with dogs living nearby who would be happy to take you out. Maybe you could look after his dogs if he has to go away. Something good should work out eventually if you are really passionate about hunting with dogs.

what are the main differences between holding dogs and bailing dogs ?

Holders hold the pig. Bailers stop the pig with a bit to the asre and then bail hard out. (bark). Holders generally hold the pig until the hunter gives the pig the knife. Bailers generally bail the pig until the hunter sneaks in and shoots it.

The best advice I can offer is that he finds someone with an older experienced dog with no bad habits to run it with. To do this join up with your local hunting club and also the fishnhunt forum and make contact with an older bloke who has the time. Good luck.

no but it will decrease its chances of injury from hunting as old dogs slow down and are at higher risk of joint problems.

Try and meet up with another hunter or just start doing long walks in the bush and stock proof as you go along. Good luck.

I'm wanting to get into hog dogging myself. I want to learn how to properly train a catch dog. I have two pitbulls (yes, real American pitbull terriers not fat couch potato bullies) that i think would be up for the job. I know to get cut gear and how to do simple first aid if needed. What i need is to know if a channel or even something else that shows how to train a catch dog the right way. Anyone know?

the best way to train dogs is to first do all your basic training and then to hunt your dogs with an experienced hunter and his pack. Only train one dog at a time.

U should get some good ute finder's and hunt at night. But good video mate.

Call me a wuss, but I would have probably boned out that monster on the spot instead of punishing myself. Rolling the carcass on its side would be difficult enough, let alone hoisting it on to my back. Dang that's a big hog. At least you didn't need to feel guilty about not going to the gym that night.

I believe that when I vote someone's video down I let them know why. The information I got from it was great. The small changes we make can change lives. Also as someone who lives in a very antihunting area I have to deal with people thinking we are nothing but mean.
