Piers Stefan Pughe-Morgan (born Piers Stefan O'Meara, 30 March 1965), known professionally as Piers Morgan, is a British journalist and television personality currently working in the United States as the US editor-at-large for Mail Online.
Morgan is the editorial director of First News, a national newspaper for children published in the UK. He began hosting Piers Morgan Live on CNN on 17 January 2011. The show replaced Larry King Live in the 9:00 pm timeslot following King's retirement. Piers Morgan Live was cancelled by CNN in February 2014 and aired its final broadcast on March 28, 2014. Morgan is a former judge on America's Got Talent and Britain's Got Talent, and a winner of Celebrity Apprentice.
In the UK, Morgan worked as a writer and editor for several British tabloids, including The Sun, News of the World and the Daily Mirror. In November 2012, he was heavily criticised in the official findings of the Leveson Inquiry, when Lord Leveson stated that comments made in Morgan's testimony about phone hacking were "utterly unpersuasive" and "clearly prove ... that he was aware that it was taking place in the press as a whole and that he was sufficiently unembarrassed by what was criminal behaviour that he was prepared to joke about it".
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

Yes a weapon can kill a lot of people but against an armed popularise even mag dumping I doubt you could mag dump before a gun has been drawn on you. Knifes and other weapons can kill but the only thing that is tracked is guns with codes and purposely designed hammers and barrels to tag bullets so you know what weapon shot the bullet. This isn't an argument it's someone being scared of guns being influenced by media, then projecting everything bad related to guns onto young people. If knives were just as efficient at killing then the military could save billions by just assuming troops with knives. Guns don't kill people but people can more efficiently kill people using guns. I do agree about the full auto issue. Spraying bullets is highly inefficient but it's also far more dangerous in terms of ricochet and missed targets. The more bullets you spray, the more likely a ricochet or missed shot can kill an innocent bystander. Having one shot makes you focus more on where you're shooting. With that said, most of the CA type bans don't really make sense. Guns have become far more efficient since the 1700s. And the framers weren't thinking that far ahead. They had no clue of what the future would bring

They have much lower murder rates than us most and yet they have some of the highest gun ownership rates in the world and most forms of hunting and sporting rifles even require no licensing. I suspect both nations would object to this proposal but using the logic of directly comparing nations crime statistics it is clear the Swiss system of high gun ownership is far better than the UK system.

I would argue that he inadvertently hit on a key point. The Sandy Hook Guy (who cares what his name was) was antisocial and played games based on massacres, probably way too much. This is a learned reaction without actual emotional repercussions. The socialization skills aren't being developed and then this game play is happening even more in place of real interaction. He's upset/disturbed and sees something familiar and acts on it. It makes sense with his limited and off center life experience. For disclosures sake, I grew up hunting and had a strict father who eased me into shooting appropriately - SAFETY FIRST. Also, I'm not a psychopath, perhaps except when driving. Well after that was ingrained, I discovered first person shooters. They were fun. I've played a grand total of 6 in my life. They were kind of fun, especially with friends that I could go after. I knew that none of the truly reflected reality because of my life experience. And, of course, I have no inclination to run after close friends while emptying an M249. If I didn't ramble enough, let me know.

Everyone in Broward County KNEW that the eventual Parkland shooter was a danger. EVERYONE. Time after time these nut cases shoot up schools and they were known to be trouble. The Parkland shooter had done things that were arrestable and prosecutable offenses as well as things that he could've been committed to a psychiatric hospital for. He wasn't even reported to NICS which would have prevented him from buying a gun. That didn't stop all the officials in Broward from calling for more gun controls. How about this? Any official that fails to report a person prohibited from owning a firearm to NCIS spends ten years in federal prison if that failure results in a mass shooting. There is no accountability as it is. How very ironic that they blamed the NRA when the NRA is the one who put the NICS in place. The NRA didn't fail to report Nik Cruz to NICS. Officials in Broward County failed to do that. How many people in Australia would still be alive if they had put the Port Arthur shooter, someone who'd had violent and dangerously unbalanced behaviors going back to childhood, in a psychiatric hospital? They took the guns from 700k Aussies who hadn't harmed anyone which is fundamentally unjust and infringed their right to keep and bear arms.

I wasn't going to jump into this but... I will admit I stopped reading comments when the name calling started so if anything notable was said after that I didn't see it.I'm not going to bother with stats because those seem to getting ignored by the anti gun people anyway. 1) Just because you believe in the second amendment doesn't make you a gun nut. 2) Assault rifles and machine guns are NOT the same thing. A machine gun continues to fire as long as the trigger is held down. Those were outlawed in something like 1934. An assault rifle works just like a semi auto handgun ( a 45 or 9mm for example). You only get 1 bullet with each pull of the trigger. 3) There are may reasons we support the second amendment that can't be explained to or ever really understood by the majority of people that aren't from here.(thank you to the non American 2nd amendment supporters here). Defending yourself is a very good reason to own a gun but I'm going to speak to the original reason for the 2nd amendment. When it comes to The Founding Fathers Piers Morgan doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. The 2nd amendment was ratified in 1791.1791 was only 2 years into George Washington's 1st Presidential term and most of the other FF were very much alive and their feelings on the subject are well documented. They were very much for it. Here is a link with some of their statements on the subject.www.thefederalistpapers.org/history/the-founding-fathers-on-the-second-amendment No they couldn't foresee the invention of semi automatic weapons but the whole point of the amendment is to give the people a fighting chance against an army funded by the government. So I don't think they would want us fighting against machine guns with muskets and hunting rifles. They had just come out of a war with an oppressive government so they weren't exactly ignorant as to what it would take to keep that from being necessary again. The people being armed is supposed to be the last resort but also a very major deterrent.

A full mil spec M-16 is a "assault rifle" and it is a "machine gun" it can also be called a "full auto". A semi automatic AR-15 is not a "Assault rifle" its just a "semi automatic rifle" like any other. The anti gun lobby made up the terminology "assault weapon" to frighten people. They made to sound as much like "Assault rifle" as possible to intentionally try and get people mixed up. "assault weapon" is just made up terminology to describe a "semi automatic rifle" that looks a bit frightening in the anti eyes.

The reason you have the impression that we're all nutjobs armed to the teeth waiting for a chance to shoot someone is that the media does a good job of making us seem that way to the rest of the world. Since the media is the mouthpiece of government, and government wants to disarm us, it follows that people who don't know any better and who believe everything they see on TV think the way you do. That's why people in the public eye, like Piers, piss off a lot of people when he comes out spouting outright lies about gun owners, and even about guns! He's an idiot that doesn't even know what he's talking about when he talks about guns!

Martin Lintzgy It's a whole lot more than 52, 40+ school aged kids in gangs dies in gun battles in Chicago just two weekends ago, the same day the Umpqua Oregon shooting took place. the reason you didn't hear about that in the media is that all those dead kids in Chicago were black, and were killed by other blacks. So I don't know where you got that figure of 52, but meh. On the other hand, I do understand your sarcasm, even if I do think it's misplaced. "So it is simply media lies that have have distorted my opinion." Um yeah, that's pretty much what I said, and it's surprisingly effective on quite a lot of people. I would even go so far as to say it works on most people! But no, those kids are dead. And it doesn't surprise me that a school shooting would just happen to take place only two day's after Obama get's pwnd by Putin at the UN while the world watches! No no, we can't have people focus on that, there needs to be a tragedy to focus on instead, and what better kind of tragedy than one that makes people DEMAND that we be disarmed!

If those people in that movie theater had been armed it is almost certain that it would've never been the scene of a mass shooting. Virtually every mass shooting is in a gun free zone. It's because mass shooters, even those who are suicidal, want to take out as many as possible before caught, eliminated by a cop or before they turn their gun on themselves and pull the trigger.

Owning guns is okay, but there should be a reason. If you dont do it for sports, self defense or collection you are doing it wrong. Gun legislation is problem. People who buy guns should have all the paperwork done, have mentally and crime checked. I am gun owner from europe, so if you want a gun(i can buy any time of pistol with permit, no mag or caliber restriction) you have to take gun courses, have a safe to keep guns, police check it once a year if guns are kept safe, courses are like 3 weeks few times a week where you learn how to shoot basics, take care of gun and basic rules of ownership. Also mental health and police checkup. For rifle licence you have to be member of shooting club and go to atleast 1 club shooting even a year to be valid.

China for example truly banned guns as you cant permanently own any gun, not even a BB gun. Also if a chinese citizen for example needed a gun for hunting he or she is allowed to borrow it and will need to return it after use...so very few people have guns in china.
