Yes it is because the extensions also have a quality. If it's a major 7th chord, the chord has a major 7th and if it's minor it has a minor 7th. Same with 9ths.

@@evsanger Yes and no. The chord extension has a major or minor property, but not the chord itself. A D maj7 without a third is called a D5maj7

@@vumlux a chord is not limited to 3 notes so not really sure what you're trying to say here? Also any chord with a 5 (like D5 for example) usually refers to a power chord so it would include the octave. Otherwise it's just an interval if it's only two notes and doesn't qualify as a chord. The chords we're talking about don't include the octave so what you're saying is kinda irrelevant here. I've never seen a chord anywhere written as "D5maj7" because it would mean the notes are the 1, 5, 7, 8, and that's not usually a very useable chord because 7 and 8 are too close to each other

@@evsanger Yes indeed it is a power chord with an extension. D5maj7 would commonly be written with a triangle instead of maj7. So D5(triangle)7, but it's the same thing. Furthermore, sucker for some dissonance in my chords. a 7 and 8 in the same chord can work nicely with the right voicing
