One needs time to discuss music - I dislike the short lecture times allocated to analysis nowadays. Messiaen took his time and look at the results ❤

You can TEST your ability to transcribe sounding notes to paper, but you can not learn how to be better at doing it. What’s more, your ability, or inability to do so reflects in no way the quality of your musicianship. Of this I am absolutely sure. The quality of the music you write is in the sound of the music, not in your ability to do tricks on paper.

Can you elaborate on this more, please? What do you think makes a great composer?

You can absolutely get better at it. I know I did in my aural skills class! And it is absolutely useful for composers - the easier you can convert what you hear in your head into written music, the better.

That's a false and counterproductive statement. I developed my ear a lot throughout the years to the point where it's not really comperabel to my abilities when I was starting out (Every singel jazz musican I ever met did the same). You can absolutely develop relative pitch and I encourage everyone reading to do so by transcribing music they like. Starting with the bass line and accepting that the first maybe 10 piaces they will make enormous amount of mistakes. After some time if you play them and stick to it you will slowly get beter. Also sindging and solfege will help a lot.
