Darren nice vlog as usual but you’re too nice of a guy, at 3:56 the not often seen DJ look of disappointment on your face spoke volumes. Coming from Canada, the pie & mash part usually looks good but to me the bland liquor puts me off and I’ve noticed that a lot of people that love it end up lacing it with chilli vinegar to give it any flavour. I appreciate that what I’m about to say is blasphemy to some, but any excursions that I may take into “The Badlands of the East End”, I’ll need to pull my cowboy hat low over my eyes, hide behind my bandana and walk fast as I prefer pie, mash……& gravy!!!!

There is a pie shop in Hoxton called F Cooke’s where the owner said that anyone that asked for gravy would be thrown out. Asking for gravy is fighting talk in these thar parts…😊

Love your channels content I was hugely into bikes when I was young and ( stupid/fearless) until I came off the back of a Honda pan European put me in hospital for ten months.Been back into hospital I went with a broken foot three weeks ago and my routine blood test came back AWFUL.I now have cancer and I caught covid in ICU All I wanted was to be back at home with my four French bulldogs a DECENT cup of tea and to watch Darren John on KZread,lucky girl that I am I returned home an hour ago and I have all three things.God Bless you and keep you safe.

I grew up off Roman Road Bethnal Green and there used to be 5 Kellys pie n mash shops 2 in Bethnal Green Rd, 2 down the market end of Roman Road Bow but the best (and nearest to me) was the one in Roman Road Bethnal Green near the Angel & Crown pub. Run by all females and it was the best. Kellys are all different as they are run by different members of the Kelly family!!

You must try my family run Pie & Mash, Noted Eel & Pie House High Rd Leytonstone E11. Originally opened in Bow Rd by my Great grandad. Now run by my uncle Pieter and cousin Alfie. I may be biased, but it is Off the charts!

Hi Darren , Try F Cooke Hoxton. Typical old school with saw dust on the floor and very nice hospitalitiy. Food is amazing and has a long history which is always good.

Lashings of chilli vinegar and white pepper can transform even a mediocre pie!

Got to try F.Cooke in Hoxton st and then museum of the home across the road on kingsland road, nice day out 👍

always fancied pie and mash, but you dont see them up north. ie lancashire, but under protest went with the wife shopping in burnley, low and behold, come dinner time, spotted a new/only pie and mash cafe in the market, tried chiken/veg mash gravy wow bang on, will be going again without the shopping shit.

For those who want to try it, the closest you can get outside of London is at Asda - honest! They sell Robins frozen pie mash liquor. They also have some shops in and around London and not bad at all. Whatever you do, don't buy the one that Sainsbury's has - Cooks pie mash liquor It's rank

Virtually every high street in London had a pie and mash shop in the '80's unlike today ....

My mother only just got down to the escalator before the pile up of people on the stairs happened in 1943. 173 killed. Worst disaster of the war. She was 16 years old. A lucky escape for both of us. I was born in Bethnal Green in 1952 in Bethnal Green Hospital. It has since been demolished.

I was just about to comment on you not having double pie n mash, it ended up looking like you had pie n "Nash", I must say when i lived in London in 1986 I went to Kelly's a good few times and always enjoyed it. Nice honest review though Darren, kudos for that.

I’m also from Befnal. I was born in Bethnal Green Hospital. Sadly it was demolished a long time ago. The last time I went to SR Kelly’s many years ago there was about a teaspoonful of meat in the pies. I haven’t been back since. If you want good pie and mash BJ’s in Canning Town, Cockney’s in Portobello Road or Eastenders in Poplar are my recommendations. Maureen’s is good too. Cockney’s in Portobello Road put so much meat in the pies they are bursting open. Nigh on paralysed me the last time I had them. 😎 Darren-John has done reviews of all of these places.

There used to be two Kelly's on Bethnal Green Road, the other one was better, suppose it's gone now, try Robin's Wansted, my local now, moved from Bethnal years ago, it's changed so much for the worse

Darren , you should try Harrington's. Selkirk road Tooting Broadway. On block from the tube station. Was my go to place before I moved to the US.

@@DarrenJohn I have seen some parts, the London plane Avenue he worked on. Mainly bits on the tourist route to be honest. He talks about it now and again but it would have changed so much now.

Another great vlog DJ I must say I have tried the pie and mash with the liquor when I used to deliver to Smithfield’s and I would prefer gravy but it’s just personal taste 👍👍👍

Traditional pie & mash with liquor a real London staple. The pie looked quite small to be honest and two mouthfuls and it was gone. Probably not the best of welcomes when she said “we don’t take card”. They should be thankful for the business. Yes that Bethnel Green disaster is famous when a crowd surged to get the the underground station during the 2nd World War. I believe there’s a memorial somewhere? Nice vlog as ever DJ.

Such a shame when the hospitality or lack there of at a place isn't great. For me it can really effect the whole experience even if the food is amazing which clearly was just average in this instance. Very strange to only be accepting cash but if you are at least have signage and tell people before loading the plate up in a nice and friendly way. You were very nice about your review though. I do appreciate how honest you are without being rude or nasty, always a true gentleman. The little bit of history at the end was interesting. I had never heard of that before. Loving the frequency of these vlogs. Can't wait to see where you go next 😁👍🏼💙 Also loved the updated intro with the little snippets of Daisy Duke in there 🏍❤

that's my go to when having Pie and mash. not been in a few years. Its great the service has not changed lol if your in the green this is the best out the 2. I moved out the green 13 years ago. the other go to cafe was the Astro Cafe, few doors down from the George pub I hear its been upgraded. would love to see you do one on that :-)

The Kelly’s at the other end of the road looked closed down when I was was there a few weeks ago. The Astro Cafe is now a sort of coffee shop. I went in there and the air was so thick with coffee that it nigh on choked me. I had to leave immediately. Nothing stays the same. I’ve seen that as I’ve grown older. I’m 70 now and I now understand why older people get upset by the changes. It’s as if your world is being taken away from you, which in a sense it is.

I was Allways told by my grandad you have to absolutely smother the green liquor with vinegar and i mean smother it lol

Been to the smoke loads of times, my nephew lives in London city island and last November dragged us to a curry slop house in Brick Lane so much for him knowing what’s what ..So will need to get to one of these places and drown it in the hot sauce that Lee loves and tick it off the list..jellied eels no ta vile..DJ get to Aldi there selling bottles of expressly martinis mock tails 😉

Pie looked very average almost soggy and liquor although I’ll put my hands up to never having tasted liquor in my life looked watery compared to previous vlogs.
