Pico W Episode 1: Setting Up the Raspberry Pi Pico W

In this video, I show how to get started with the Pico W and some basic information about this microcontroller. I show how to solder on the headers and load micropython on the device. I also cover using the Thonny IDE to connect to the Pico W and do the first blink program.

Thanks for the compliment but I have to admit, I am not a trained engineer. I am a retired statistician. I am enjoying learning electronics as a hobby. Thanks for subscribing and watching!

A great start to get my Pico W up and running. As a retired engineering lecturer I really do appreciate the detail and the complete steps given, so many other lessons gloss over the "bits" one really needs to know. Many thanks and I have subscribed 🙂

Thanks for watching and your feedback. I am retired too from a career as a statistician in the engineering and sciences areas. These videos are my retirement journey in learning electronics and robotics. Not even close to an expert but I do enjoy trying to explain things in plain language. If I can explain it on a video that means that I have learned the material reasonably well. Cheers!

Well presented ! From my experience you can use label 'LED' with oridinary Picos (aka non-PicoW) as well. I did stumble over that when trying to run the same code on both Pico and PicoW recently

I will have to give that I try. It has been ages since I played with the internal LED. Thanks for watching!

This is super useful, subscribed! Ordered a Pico W today because it was available, but was all at sea regards header pins and installing micro python … you guided through the process so completely and helpfully (you could easily have left out a step in the process in assuming knowledge of this or that, but I’m very grateful you didn’t 😊)

Thanks for this nice video, I’m glad it popped up in my iTunes feed this morning. I’m glad you started with the soldering of the headers. Frankly I bought a pico with the headers on already because while I have soldered in the past, I’m intimidated by it. I think I’ll try again. As for editors, I started with Mu, and I really like it. I use it for my Microbit, adafruit boards and playing around with python. I’m just a retired novice having fun learning.

I am retired too and started learning electronics over a year ago. Mu is a fine editor - whatever works for you! I am still trying to improve my soldering skills. You just have to jump in and be OK with making a few mistakes. Thanks for watching!

Subscribed. Been setting up a Raspberry Pi "lab" and tools for electronics (breadboards, resistors, soldering...) recently and I wanted to include a bit of Pico W at some point.

one extra step I do before soldering is to rub the contacts lightly with a fine emery cloth or other light abrasive to remove a layer of oxidation on the solder tabs. that really makes the solder flow better. also .8mm 37/63 solder but I also use a lot of 60/40 multicore solder and have no problem using it instead of 37/63.

No matter what I try [reload, restart, reinstall, change cable] my Pico does not show up on the drives. It did initially but now a day later it doesn't. Any guidance please? BTW Win11 and all up to date. VPN off ... NO sign on device manager ports either. Help!
