from the first few minutes, I can tell you both team did not return the serves deep enough, all of their returns are less than half the way in the opponents court. That is the reason they afraid of moving towards because of the shor return. From you pick apart video, I just have learn the important of the deep return. Thanks for your video, it is better than or equal to have a coach.

Well thanks for the kind words. If you really want to move up in skill level, I suggest you take some lessons from a certified coach.

Nice match. Thought Meagan was the star and predicted they'd win, though the guy on the other team was athletic with some very good gets; all players were good. Shallow returns did factor in.

Thanks again Rory - great job. I would like to add that Cannon needs to take pickleball lessons. His foot work is treacherous, along with his upper body - he is all over the place. Saving grace for him is that he is playing with #1 control paddle, I’d hate to see a power paddle in his hand. Not to be harsh on him, but just want people to advance their skills.

These are great videos! Would you be open for reviewing a pickleball match that I watched myself? I am curious if that's ok and if so, how to forward info about the match.

Kept waiting for their return of serves to go deeper. Maybe they were being conservative, but you should return all those serves in the back third at least.

While I generally think it's harsh to judge the outcome of a game based on four serves/returns/approaches to the net, I also believe how you do one thing is how you do everything. If you're not hustling to get to the NVZ, you're likely to skirt on the other aspects of the game.

There were a few things that I think did give Meagan and Cory the advantage. As you noted the cold start didn't help. What made me really lean to them was first was the height advantage. This was also amplified by the power of their shots. If you don't normally play against that combination, I think you are at a disadvantage unless your drops and resets are excellent. It was a good match and with the mid match rally it made it feel quite competitive.

That's a very good point. When I play somebody who is built like Cory, whenever possible, I try to attack the middle of his body. Players his size make for a very large Target.

@@pickleballpick-apart9787 I'm 5-9, 165. Rec play regularly, and find that there are advantages and disadvantages to every height. Some of the 5 foot tall women are hitting forehand drives at you net high from the nvl. The big guys...aim low to their backhand, or blast 'em.

While Megan is very good, Cory is the best player on the court. I have played him and seen him play a few times and his hands are next level which you really didn't get to see in this video. He consistently medals at the 4.0 level in tournaments.

People on the right need to learn to give overheads to the left side player or else getting knocked over is the best case scenario. I’ve almost broken someone’s hand because they tried taking an overhead in the middle of the court as the right side player. Easily avoidable as long as you communicate though.

Neither team was that impressive, but congrats to the winners. What you call an "ass backward" backhand, Simone Jardim calls a "Belgian" backhand, in recognition of Gigi LeMaster.

@@pickleballpick-apart9787Simone recommends ready position at the NVZ with paddle at 10 o’clock position. She points out problem with 12 o’clock ready position is when a ball is hit high to the player’s non-dominant shoulder (left if right handed player) you can rotate the paddle 90 degrees in either direction, striking the ball with the forehand or backhand side of the paddle. Players that hit the ball on the forehand side, tend to hit the ball down into the net as the player in the video did. I have never seen Gigi play but I assume she has mastered a technique that won’t work for most players.

Rory Thanks for the shoutout on using my video. I play rec play with Cory all the time, holding the paddle wrong or not, you dont want to be across the net from him. He gets plenty of pace and topspin with that grip. ppa pro callan dawson holds his paddle similar.

I will. I thought the all-around play was very good. I was glad to see the collision didn't result in an injury. Callan may be the only pro player who holds a paddle like that. There's a reason almost all don't.

Probably good for the opponents that he is choking up on the paddle, just think how powerful his slams would be if his grip was lower.
