What most do wrong here, is not starting by making a connection first. They're nervous and just spit out their rehearsed pick up line, expecting something magic to happen. In fact, it's all about connecting and improvisation; funny pick up lines make most girls cringe (at least here in Europe). The guy asking to go to the movies showed it. He did very well at first, she wanted to join him. But then he ruined it because he felt like he had to finish his pick up line, and then he felt guilty for acting towards her, so he admitted he said it was all a prank. Surely didn't feel great for her to hear.
