Scott, you are an amazing man I love all your shows and the knowledge you share with your shows watched the fabrication of your gate so far, amazing. One advice not related to except for welding a joint from one side using a copper backing bar should be 3/8 by 2 inch with a milled groove the width of a weld Beat concaved depth about 1/8 inch deep preheat the backup bar to 200 degree F so the weld will be clean and full penetration .Hope you do not mind me telling you that. Best wishes. yours John Adolph I can not wait to see your Gate installed.

John!!!! Thank you for commenting and thanks for the great clarification on the backing bar! I will do that next chance I get! I’m just about to start working, I hope, on editing the video of your amazing career in heavy structural steel construction in Canada! There’s so much information from the interview that it’s hard to know where to begin, but I am going to make something happen very soon! Thank you for watching and thanks for all the great advice!

I think the capacitors are used to produce a voltage difference between phases, so the rotor actually starts spinning. Something like that :)

You guys should take a look at using a VFD to provide power to the 10 hp blue motor. They can operate on single phase input power and can output three phase power to the induction motor. I suggest a 15hp rated VFD to run the 10hp motor.

Think of a capacitor as a pressure tank (fluid) or an elastic band (mechanical). They can store pent up energy for a while and then slap you (or a motor that needs a bunch of energy to get past its initial rest/static state) hard.

You never back the pin off a little bit. The manufacturers even tell you this. They give you the flat spot to put a wrench on to get it off of it binds up. I forget the reasoning, but don't do that!

Well that is one nice paint job on the fluid tank! ;o) Motors, I do know a bit about though. If you are trying to get a motor like yours to start the device is called a "Capacitor Start" (for obvious reasons) but it is interesting how they work. The capacitor when coupled to your motor causes a phase shift in one winding. Literally changing the time the motor gets its "Grunt" from the power line. This kicks the motor a bit and the main winding is now no longer lined up to the magnetic lines of force. Think of it like the kick start on a motorbike. A small kick will allow it to use the power to continue to turn and inertia will take it round the rest!

When a man hits seventy with back pains he doesnt need to ask why you put that crane on your truck. He just wishes he did 50 years ago. Trying to convince a 20 year old grandson to use lifting tools now will prevent him from the same thing. He is hard of hearing as i was back then.

It is a bought of irrational judgement that causes men to cut the shafts off their phase converter motors. Safety propaganda has made sensible folks a slave to social acceptance in their mission to demonstrate their allegiance to group conformity. A spinning shaft is not a danger, especially in a shop filled with power hammers, fire forges, and percussive pugilism. Wrapping it with electrical tape to make it smooth would remove any remote hazard from anything getting snatched by the keyway. But all out castration prevents the motor from serving future usefulness to the enterprising shop steward. Listen kids, don't cut it off, no matter what your friends say. You might need it some day. ----Doozer

Ok so this video was just to show off you buying an expensive piece of equipment? I would rather hear Nate speak on the projects he's doing for his house. I can't tell you how many videos you've put out about buying yourself a piece of equipment but its getting old and quite frankly obnoxious. Where's Nate when you need him.
