I'm currently using the Audix SCX1/HC for indoor dialog and webinars. -- I'm happy to see you're making a modular-capsule mic. Now, I'm curious to know what that sounds like in comparison, and take a good listen to Uni-Mic with the HC capsule, once it comes out. Naturally, I'm also curious about the price point, but really more interested in the sound characteristics. Way to go on making the Uni-Mc.

That one line about it "sounding the way it looks" is so helpful. I'm so used to cleaning up the sound, but it's important that it all aids in the story being told. So good.

"This is really dirty audio", I hear, listening to audio that sounds better than anything I've made so far. I was pretty sure I was going to get a better shotgun microphone and all my audio would sound a little better, no matter where I was filming, but now I need to do a little more research, as it looks like multiple microphones are ideal, but the budget I have currently allows for 0.5 good microphones.

This is my new favorite Tim and Eric sketch. In all seriousness this was pretty useful showing the differences between all of the mics in a relatively short video.

Hi Andrew from Deity! I'm loving your videos from the Sound 101 playlist you created. Everything is very informative and to the point. As an intermediate sound mixer, I've been using my Zoom H1N recorder for my lavaliere microphone recordings. I just got a Zoom F6 which I've been toying around with. Before that I was connecting my BOYA BYPMV1000L into my Canon EOS M50 camera through the microphone jack. I'd record sound in my square room and when editing, I'd pick up access noise for some reason... you're video are helping me understanding more about sound production and what to look out for. So thank you!

Another great vid! Could you do a video of the best ways to capture sound into a recorder, mixer, or PC? For instance, getting lav mics into a combo jack recorder like f4 or H6. That's the part that always makes me nervous. Even when I monitor and it sounds great, my recording doesnt impress as much as I'd like!

Thanks for the very detailed explanation! Very cool and timely. I am looking to buy a new mic for my new KZread/Green Screen Studio. In my setup the ideal place for the mic is over top of the camera which is about 8 feet away from me. I have a Samson Pencil Condenser mic which is going through my mixing board, to my computer. At this distance, the sound is not great, I have to add way too much gain to pick me up, and then the mic it too live. I did find that the ideal placement for it would be a ceiling mount just out of frame...about 3-4 feet from my standing position. So that is option 1...or I could get a shotgun mic. The question is, for the room I described, is a particular mic you would recommend for this room with the mic 8 feet from me, that won't break the bank?

Great video! Thanks for doing this test. What would you recommend for a setup with three people close together around a table in a pretty dry room: three lavs, two hyper cardioid in an x/y pattern, or two cardioid in an x/y pattern?

What would you recommend if my audio source must be 2-3meters away from the mic and is inside a big hall with a lot of echoes? Sorry, I know this is a stupid situation.. But sometimes I am unable to use the wireless lav. And does it get better if I set up two mics from opposite angles? The echo comes from the top - 5m high ceiling

I've been shooting internal dialog with a Aston Stealth recently, but I need to get pretty close (and in the shot :| ) to get the right sound. At least for now, they've been informal informational videos, so it's not been a big deal, but the S-Mic 2s looks very interesting for this reason. I'd love to try one out.

What I always find interesting is almost every mic test is set up in a way that you would use on a set.... The mics typically would be further away

I haven't been sold on buying (nor using) Deity Microphones, but Deity has the most info-giving KZread site on filmmaking audio that I kind of feel like I'd be cheating on Deity if I used anything else. Thank you for these videos. I'm a Deity guy now.

Been well over a year since I've heard about the Uni-Mic and still no mention on Deity web site about it. If ever released, how will it stack up against the Oktava MK-012 in both price and performance? 2 Years is a long time to go from prototype to product. Would not be surprised if Rode slipped in to grab this market share.

Ok so this is possibly a stupid question. If you have a long shotgun like a Sennheiser MKE600 and no budget for anything else currently, would there be any benefit from blocking half the ports by wrapping tape halfway up the shaft (ooer)? Great vid and demonstration though 😁

Hi Folks, enjoying learning a bit about audio but I am stills only guy (so far) but I have been asked to do a number of short videos about the experiences of patients with long term medical conditions. I got the gig because I am also a patient. This is a FOC project on my part so the budget will be zero or less and I have to admit that I am more than a bit confused over getting the audio to an acceptable level in a 2 person interview type setting most likely in a living room type space but would like to include some B roll outside / in a garage space tinkering with a motorbike etc. Can you offer some recommendations that won't break the bank? I have a couple of LAV mics and a Zoom H4n borrowed from another photog but that's it.

@@RandomRichard2022 it's not really our place to speak ill of another microphone brand. But rather just tell you that we designed the S-Mic 2S to be one of the lightest indoor boom mics ever made. And we gave it a short length to work great indoors when low ceilings are an issue.

Gotta say the simulated bathroom with omni sounds FAR cleaner than I would expect a real omni in a real bathroom to sound

Sorry, I didn't get whole idea/setup/meaning/ and purpose of large speaker as a wall reverb imitation and some imaginable "bathroom", but thanks form mics' examples anyway.

@@t1merickson All I have is NT1 studio kit not NTG1 My KZread studio is 7mx5m Room with concrete wall and 3.5m ceiling ....Strong Echo reverb situation..I am not interested to use Foam solutions and would like to see what Uni-MIC would do for me and put it in youtube video as a comparison with NT1 kit.

Why can't I find this UNI-MIC with interchangeable capsules anywhere online. Not even on your site?

Curtis Judd I have a super useful tip, when you use a Zoom F8 and don’t want to buy expensive powering devices: Use a Powerbank (10000-30000mAh) and buy this cable: www.amazon.de/dp/B075DDRF5W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GigCDbHPE7V3B Its a lot cheaper than all the other devices I’ve seen yet. I you this for a year right now and it never failed. Shouldn’t be an adv. just noticed that I’ve always seen the same Batteries, and wanted to share this.

@@DeityMicrophones i just want to be able to see my screen and keyboard without the mic blocking the view of either; to game or read a script without blocking my sight. I'm sitting at a computer desk in the corner of the living room. maybe have it hanging above my head, pointing down at my mouth. after watching this video, it sounds like i'd want either a short shotgun, or a cardiod or hype-cardiod to fill that role. i'm not sure which type would be more suited for this though. this would be used for instructional videos where i talk and explain things.

@@Layarion Okay, Look into something like the S-Mic 2S, its what we use on the show weekly and our room is pretty loud with the AC on and the loud traffic and sirens from the hospital next door.

Hmm, not convinced of this testing method. If you consider a small bathroom, there will be reflections everywhere so this test is far from a fair representation of that. Cards can perform even better than hypers at times if the ceiling is close due to the lack of rear lobe.

Totally understand your concern about the reflections from everywhere. It's not so much about directionality of the reflects so much as it is to the sheer volume of the reflections. It took us about an hour and a half to fine tune the feedback system from the PA to match the measurements we took in our office's bathroom. By feeding the mic into the PA and feedback the PA into the mic we are able to recreate that space's volume in a control situation. As for the ceiling, we address that here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eayn2q1mh7S2l5M.html As for Cards performing better than Hypers... you'd have to have some really low hard surface reflective ceilings. Not impossible. But a cardioid won't have the same reach as a hyper which could be a real struggle with frame lines.

Deity Microphones Yeah I appreciate that you adressed the rear lobe, in theory. I think it was however not a fair test to draw the conclusions you did as the test itself did not take multiple reflections of a real room into account. For comparison, I found this to be a good experiment where the cardioid performed better kzread.info/dash/bejne/omWLsdaAes6aiag.html in a very echoey room.

Ok, but a hypercardioid capsule will need to be closer to the sound source than a shotgun so may not be suitable for a video shoot because it will need to be held outside the edge of the frame.

Not exactly. You just need to add more gain. So a recorder like the Zoom H4n might not be a good partner for a hypercardioid but a Zoom F4/F8n would be.

@@cavalrycome Hey man I think you're still slightly confused about the topic discussed here so I'll chime in with my thoughts. Why do you think it needs to be closer to the sound source? Because a hypercardioid rejects less noise than a shotgun? This is only a problem if well, noise is actually the problem in the location. In this case he's demonstrating the issues of room acoustics and its effect on shotgun microphones. 'Reverb' is actually a combination of Early and Late reflections. The Early reflections are the part of the room acoustics that first bounce off the wall, kinda like an echo. As the early reflections continue to bounce, they become late reflections, which are much more diffused and generally more pleasing. Shotgun microphones have three weak spots compared to hypercardioids. They have a larger rear lobe behind the mic picking up more early reflections, they have an interference tube that if catching the early reflection at the wrong time can cause bad to really bad comb filtering (the example here isn't as bad is it can be imo), and shotguns can sometime have less accurate off axis rejection (in terms of frequency response), which means the reverb that IS being rejected can sound a bit unnatural. A microphone's 'reach', is really an arbitrary term in that it's not bringing the sound closer to the microphone in anyway, it's just rejecting around where it's pointing, which can result in what sounds like the microphone having 'reach' . I'm only distinguishing this because one might consider a microphone's 'reach' as an actual quality of a microphone, vs distinguishing how the microphone works and how that effects the way it picks up sound. So counter intuitively to what you might expect, you can get audio that sounds more present with a hypercardioid than a shotgun, especially in those boxy/small parallel walled spaces.

@@ChrisPFuchs To isolate a target sound over background noise and room reverb created by the target sound, a hypercardioid needs to be closer to the source than a shotgun because it has a wider pickup pattern. If you're recording in a completely silent location, background sounds may not be an issue, but reverb still will be. Think about it this way. If you double the distance that the microphone is from the target source, you will have to compensate by increasing the gain by a factor of four in sensitivity to get the same audio level. However, the reflections of the target sound off the walls of the room will be reaching the microphone at a similar volume as they were before you moved it away from the subject, which means that after you've increased the gain, these reflections will sound much more prominent in the recording than when the microphone was positioned closer to the subject, thus giving you a muddier result. With a shotgun microphone's narrower pickup pattern, the reverb will still sound louder than before moving the microphone further away and turning up the gain, but because the pickup pattern is narrower, more of the reverb that it will pick up will be from the wall directly behind the subject so that moving away from the subject will also entail moving away from most of the reflections so the reflections will also be quieter along with the target after moving further back but still proportionately louder than they were before. I don't dispute that there is a problem with using shotgun microphones in confined spaces relating to the interference tube. I'm just pointing out that there is a trade-off. You might be able to use a hypercardioid for a very tight shot, but if you want to mix that with a recording taken during a wider shot where the microphone had to be positioned further away, the quality of any room reverb will sound different between the two takes.

why dont you use real room, real bathroom. Rather than simulating it with a speaker. Seems kind of Dumb. A real closed room sounds more reverby than it did with ur speaker. COuld do better.

Yeah it was a nice video but the test kind of didn't work, I was just hearing a reverb size that of the room you were in, in most of the examples. That being said you're not wrong about the information and I'm definitely gonna purchase a deity mic one day!
