If anyone is considering a career in trucking or thinks that leasing is a bad option, let me share an example to clarify the misconceptions. Many company drivers mock leasing and claim that they earn more money. However, let's break down the numbers. For instance, earning $2400 for 800 miles may seem low, but let's calculate the expenses. At Prime, we pay $2.50 per gallon of diesel, and most trucks get at least 8 miles per gallon. For 800 miles, you'd need 100 gallons, which costs $250. After deducting this expense, you're left with $2150. As a business owner, you'd need to pay 30% tax, which is $645, leaving you with a net income of $1505. This translates to approximately $1.80 per mile, which is significantly more than 50 cents per mile. If we convert this to an hourly wage, covering 800 miles at 60mph would take around 13.3 hours (let's round it up to 14 hours). This means you'd earn $1500 in 14 hours, equivalent to an hourly salary of $107.00. In contrast, a company driver would need to drive 3000 miles to earn $1500, which takes around 50 hours. This means that what a lease operator earns in 14 hours, a company driver takes 50 hours to earn, and the lease driver still has 54 hours left in their 70-hour workweek.
