Little Geo and Chevy trackers are durable and run 4ever. About the first GEN RAV4. I test drove one with 266,000 miles last night and loved it and the body was perfect, but I just wasn’t sure about buying it and then today I saw one with 170,000 miles. It’s a 98 and it’s mostly rust free but not as clean as the 2000 with 266. I’m hearing mixed emotions about the reliability of these vehicles. Head gasket issues, how common are they? And the transmission issues that apparently the first GEN have I’m doing my research and I think it’s just an ECU control module that needs to be rebuilt which is very inexpensive two to $300. Thoughts?

Love the rav4, but if you want the best rav4 ever made you gotta go for the 3rd gen v6! Hard to find with as low of mileage as the one you got, but it’s like a race car rav. I plan on finding a clean 1st gen like yours soon to have as a second daily, maybe thinking about a 5th gen 3S-GTE engine swap cause I’ve heard it’s relatively easy from others and adds a whole lot of power to the little 1st gen.

Lol im from Portland and cars dont rust really here. Thats more probably east Oregon with all the snow and the beaches with salt water in the air. i5 corridor is pretty much empty of rust conditions.

I think that the roof racks are not from this car, but something aftermarket that was fitted on the car. I am very curious what these racks are, as I am desperately looking for my 1997 MK1 as well...! any clews??

I have the same thing only white and its at 240k now. No body damage and the paint is almost perfect. Except the trim of course

​@jshmoe567 it was maintained by a mechanical engineer for his daughter, so all of the maintenance was done meticulously. It's also a 5 speed so it's a different kinda dynamic with trans fluid. But trans transfer case and rear end were all serviced around 160k

What brand is that roof rack? It looks sleeker than the Toyota OEM roof rack for the Rav4...

I want to see a video of you starting it with the hood open and then going for a nice long 10 minute drive after. Ye

1st gen RAV4 with a 1st gen CR-V roof rack?

I just picked up a 1997 Rav4 that is AWD and 5 speed also. Mine has 150xxx miles and absolutely no rust or damage. I paid $2000 I bought it to daily drive while I install a lower mileage 3.4L 5vz engine and... WHAT I'M Most Excited About.... A Manual transmission swap into my 2001 TRD Double Cab Tacoma... 😄

@@MojaveDream yeah I lucked out. Went and looked at 3 different ones over the last 5 months and they were all junk. I'd basically gave up on finding one and last Friday I was getting an inspection done on my Tacoma to get my tags renewed. The older gentleman that I bought it from pulled up to see if the guy who owned the garage could look to see what was wrong with the windshield wipers. Turns out he was trying to turn the wipers on with the turn signal switch. LOL I asked him what ya doing with it... he said going to sale it. He said 2k and I said sold. 🤣🤣🤣

@@MojaveDream I just may have to do one. I've been into Toyota's for the past 10 or so years. Mainly 1st gen 4runners and 1st gen Tacoma's I've had quite a few 3rd gen runners also. I didn't realize how popular the 1st gen Rav4's were until I started looking for one. LOL If you look through my fpv drone videos there are glimpses of my 01 Double Cab Tacoma and my 1985 3rz swapped 85 1st gen 4runner in a few of the videos. LOL

Can you tell me what the stickers on the inner frame of the back doors say? There has been some debate regarding the Rav4 involved in the Teresa Halbach murder that the sticker there has the vin on it. Could you confirm?

I would go with Bilsteins but they are a little pricey. KYB’s are good if you want to save a little money

Does anyone know is any older rav4 4wd manual transmission had the capability of turning on and off the 4wd to 2wd? If yes, when on 2wd did the front or rear wheels have power?

No the 4WD models are full time 4WD with no option to toggle to 2WD.

@@holdfast4588 Those air cooled XR’s are bulletproof, I had a XR650L for a while and it never wanted to die. I got a 690 Enduro KTM currently!

I had one Im interested in but he says it pops out if 5th gear ⚙️
