Piano Man Parody Song - Trailers and Caravans (and how scary they are to reverse!)

This is why I told my husband our cargo trailer will have to sit idle until he comes home-if I tried, it would literally be a crash course!

Very wise!
I got a phone game that simulates parking with a trailer shortly before I purchased a trailer. While playing I came to the realization that the way to back up was to drive the hitch, not the car. By that I mean that I can move the car to whatever position or orientation I want without thinking, I've been driving cars for years. I simply have to pay attention to which direction I want the hitch to go and just make it happen with the car. Whatever mental trick works for you, I highly recommend practicing with a game first.

That tractor at the end. ROFL. I love how you split it up and saved that last bit for the end. You can almost hear him saying "F*&^ This I'm moving forward, I've already lost my job anyway". And then he keeps moving without his back wheels. I'm still laughing as I type this.

OMG!!!!! In my "younger days", I've done EXACTLY that! I just died listening to this!! I'm in Michigan....land of the Great Lakes, where children learn to pilot a boat before they learn to ride a bike. But a trailer???? I did damage. I listened to this over and over! Memories....🤣 And, brilliant parody for that beautiful voice!

Thank you, Judy! Yes, my trailer experience is from lugging kayaks to lakes too.
I never had a problem backing up trailers. As long as everybody shuts up and nobody complains that I'm driving slower than a snail, I can maneuver just fine! I bet this song wrote itself after you had a traumatic experience!

haha...this brings back fond memories of Dad taking us camping with our little tent trailer. He would only go into camping spots that he could drive straight through. One time the only one left was one he had to back in. He unhooked the trailer and the whole family got out and we pushed it into place. 🙂 Thank you for this hilarious video that brought back such great memories with my Dad.

It brought back memories of Dad launching the motorboat into the water. He didn't have difficulty, though. The reason the video reminded me of Dad is because of the boat trailer.

Shirley, I have a small trailer and just can't do it right. Laughed during the whole song. I have one other one to share with you. Most people ( and that includes me ) have had trouble going around a corner in a cab over. This is a vehicle where you are sitting over the front wheels. In my case, I had a '64 Ford van and also a '69 VW van. If you're not used to these cars, the first time driving and making a right turn, I bet you go over the curb on the corner. After a couple times you learn, you go pass the corner and then turn the wheels.
I just don't lol!! 🤣😂🤣 love it!! 💜

😆 Thanks! Who needs to be able to back trailers anyway?!
I feel bad for that truck driver stuck on the bollard. That's something you can't easily get unstuck from (no matter what your skill level). I remember butchering a trailer reverse. I was driving a bus with trailer and had driven into a driveway forwards. Usually you could just drive out forwards on the way out . On this night it was raining, dark and next to no visibility. I realized I couldn't go straight out as they had set up a road closure . As I was reversing out initially a taxi driver drove around my trailer and blocked me by parking there. I was like, "Man, I'm trying to reverse and you've now blocked me in". He wasn't budging (typical taxi) so I drove forwards and took a different (and more difficult) line. At this point some uber pulled in behind and blocked me. Those are just like taxis so again I readjusted and took an even worse and more difficult line. I was so crossed up now and they were not moving. I ended up driving along the footpath around a 90 degree bend with next to no visibility but found a no standing post. If it hadn't been there, I would have got out. Some crazy asian man started banging on the side of the bus (over 15 times). I had realized that I had come up against the sign and he kept banging on the side even though I drove forwards to try a different angle. Finally he stopped and I thought , "Thank goodness". As I went to reverse again he started banging again (even though I was missing the sign). I got out and asked him what is wrong. He went on about how I was hitting the sign. I said, "Where am I hitting the sign ?" as I was a good 1.5 metres (5 feet) away from it still. I asked him not to hit the bus as it is distracting and explained that I had to reverse out of here as the exit on the other side is closed. Finally he agreed not to hit the bus so I got back in, reversed it out (missing the sign). Sure, it took a while to get out because I could barely see but I made it. That stupid taxi was still there. I don't know if the asian man was the uber driver or just some crazy guy. Ps That guy with the caravan was in a big pickle. PPs I remember backing the bus with trailer out of a hotel drive in section once. It was so tight . Usually I had a smaller trailer on but this day the extra long / wide with extra axle was on. It was just too long to get through without hitting the giant pot plants (2 feet in diameter and about 2.5 feet high). I brought the trailer less than an inch from it whilst reversing out and the front of the bus mere inches from the side of the hotel but got it out. Another time I had to reverse the bus and trailer about 150 metres down the street as the bus was too long to turn at the end. That was fun. I even reversed the trailer up a steep narrow narrow bending lane (check out "ivory lane Brisbane, QLD" on google maps ( all the way to the top because the turn around was blocked)

Man, you sound like a reversing legend! Well done.
BladderJax...laughing at this to the max....You've captured exactly how awkward, etc it is to see how folks maneuver their trailers, 5th wheels (caravan/camper ), etc, no matter the season, whete one lives (country, province, etc . )... It amazes me...I have family that have 5th wheelers....how they can maneuver...but they do....Good thing I don't have a driver's license.... 😂💜🤣

Hilarious and so true, Shirley! Fantastic parody. I could have had a great video for you, of my hubby, reversing our brand new 26foot caravan out of a very long bush track! Not only did it take over an hour, but he almost ran me over a couple of times while I was trying to help him reverse! We were trying to get to a beachside camping ground, but ended up going home, totally defeated!😒🏖😓 Lucky it's been long enough for him to get a hearty laugh out of your video! Well done, Shirley! 😀❤️🐨🙋♀️🥰🤗🤸♀️
Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Sue! I'm glad your husband can laugh about it now!
Absolutely hilarious from start to finish.....Shirley, you are a true "gem"! We used to own a 26ft caravan - initially, hubby would do the reversing into the spots at caravan parks (you must realise that it's a "real man" thing to do this successfully, and in the shortest time possible). Well, the other occupants of the park would get out their deck chairs, bring out a drink and snack, and enjoy the "comedy" aspect of it all!! As he drove forward, then reverse, with different angles and "lining up" endeavours, i would then get the blame for giving "terrible instructions" ! One could almost hear the silent clapping of the cheer squad who believed they were viewing the latest episode of Lucille Ball snd Desi Arnez in real time. I assure you - this almost became grounds for divorce. EVENTUALLY, his "male ego" would release its tight grip on him, and he would relent and allow me to do it! I actually surprised myself in that I was able to do this very successfully most of the time. You see, I had read about a very important tip in the art of reversing trailers, vans and the like - you put both hands in the middle at the bottom of the steering wheel, and turn whichever way you wanted the back end of the caravan to go.Thus, there was no need any longer to do "mental gymnastics"! Btw, just to let you know, hubby and I did not divorce, but the comedy show for the park neighbours came to an unfortunate (for them) end. Keep these parodies coming, Shirley, and hope you're enjoying your rest.❤️

My brother owned a cabin cruiser with a trailer, and large pickup truck out in California. He had to learn to get good with it or go home. After a bit of practice, and doing it nearly every weekend he mastered it. I would sometimes go out to Catalina Island with him for a weekend. I just shared this video and he fell over laughing.

Love it! Practise certainly does help, while avoidance (what I do) doesn't!
Shirley you are magnificent! I love Billy Joel. My husband and I trailed a boat. He often asked me to put it down the ramp. I have a difficult time with spatial relationships. Give me a pair of shoes and it will take me two tries to fit them in the box. In my stained glass class I had to cut miters. Mine always came out backwards! But constantly having to turn the steering wheel in the illogical direction cured me of that (after many MANY tries!😂 )

This reminds me of my mom when we went to get an oil change and the tires rotated. We both felt that the mechanics thought that we were dumb "blondes" . My mom was trying to follow the mechanic's directions to pull into the garage. My mom's 92 years old and legally deaf with a cochlear implant. We learned that the two mechanics were still "green". When we were paying for the services, I noticed that one fellow had a "tick" and I questioned it and found out that he had cancer which caused his "ticks". He talked fast and didn't look at us. When we asked about a discount, he asked his boss who was nearby. When we received the follow up survey, we filled it out stating how we felt about the service we received. The company even responded to it.

Outstanding! Having had this problem with our sailboat more times than I care to think about this is spot on. I hope this is an example of life experience for you - it's really a learning experience. Haha, so relatable. That's why I bought my current car with a trailer assist mode that automatically steers when I'm backing up with a trailer attached. Just put it in reverse, let go of the steering wheel and turn a little knob to go straight or around a curve and the car steers itself.

Shirley, my everyday vehicle is a Ford Transit Motorhome and I've never had issues anywhere near this. Mind you, I'm only 5ft4ins and 45kg, yet can handle this beauty with ease. I even backed up onto rear tyre ramps by myself. Yet, I have witnessed those who were like those in your video. One women had a fifth-wheeler, (a caravan bolted to the back tray of a steardy ute), who had her 8yr old child attempt to guide her into place at a grassy camp ground for 50mins! If that wasn't bad enough to watch, she then had her generator going in the middle of the day for hours! Just want you want on top of the Australian Alps amongst the snow-gums and peace. Honestly, some people don't belong on or off the roads. Hope you've moved into your new abode by now and doing well, Kris.🇦🇺💖🕊

I have managed to reverse a trailer twice perfectly.... the rest of the time I will drive to the spot and unhook said trailer and move it into its place.... reverse said vehicle back down and then hook the trailer back on and finally drive and give back the trailer to said owner.! But some people can reverse a trailer even at speed... Yet I can reverse any vehicle or truck perfectly well.

BRILLIANT!!! Everyone thinks backing up a trailer will be a cinch. No.... Everything is opposite and corrections have to be made way before you normally would think. Every farm boy has gone through this humiliation.

I went up one narrow dirt road and reached a locked fence. Cound not back up my trailer so I unhitched it and pulled i to the side next to a cliff. Did the Austin Powers thing and spend half-hour turning my SUV around, inch at a time. When I was pointed down the road, I pulled my trailer to hook it up again and went down the road looking for the right way to the lake.

I missed this one on the day, but I just enjoyed an extended belly laugh! Excellent lyrics, and a marvelous vocal performance. The footage is just a bonus, but WHAT a bonus! 😅 I dread backing up a trailer, but I certainly do better than most of the folks in the video. Plus, I know when to quit and start afresh. Oh my aching neck......

Thanks, Bob. Good to hear you won't be contributing footage for future trailer fail videos!!
Hysterical, particularly for those of us that can do it !

And terrifying for those who can't! 😆
This song is about me! -I hitched a ride with a woman who forgot she was towing a trailer and backed it into the gas pumps at a convenince store. -I was coming home from a multi-day paddle and had a trailer loaded with kayaks. We pulled into the lot of a rock store for Shawna I got stuck! I tried and tried and could not get out of that tiny space. Ken, offered to try and I was so frustrated I gave up. It took Ken 2 minutes to back that trailer out of the lot. Ken is a Trailer-Backing GOD!!!!!
