    My hubby has a motorcycle but I have mobility issues and I can't get on his motorcycle. I need something much more stable. So for people like me something like this might work then I can go riding with my hubby. I really don't care if people laugh the ability to get out into the world and spend time with my hubby is most important then people making fun because I'm not on a "real" motorcycle. Thank you to the reviewing for pointing out how stable this scooter is for people like me.

    I bought one of these a year ago after seeing Motortriker's review ( you definitely should ask for commission Motortriker) Never ridden a bike before, sold my car and its now my only form of transport and I love it. Thank you for being so open minded with your review. I watched a lot of your videos when I first started riding and found them invaluable.

    Russ, I got the LT 500 ie Sport Tourer as I have a back issue, and even riding a 125 was getting to be a strain. Biggest tip I had from the mechanic when I got it was to stop and start with your feet down, but once stopped you can engage the tilt lock and let the bike take all the weight... The 500 is very nippy and capable of keeping up with traffic easily. Also the Trike is so big it has a "presence" on the road and feels very comfortable and safe. Good lights for night riding and as you say, it's fun !!!

    Actually Russ, if a 'real biker' can't enjoy something a little different every now and again, then they need to re-evaluate their outlook on life. When I was originally looking for a bike, I found an untitled, unregistered 2009 Yamaha FJR1300AE, the electronic clutch version. There are so many people that I've talked to that decried the bike because it was 'automatic', even though you must shift through the gears, both up and down. Not everyone is going to want to ride a Harley or a SuperSport bike. We want more and more people to be out riding, and if an automatic transmission like the Honda DCT, or a three wheeled bike the Piaggio gets it done, then we should all be in support of those bikes being on the road. I grew up in the late 1950's and through the 60's, and while at that time, most cars had auto transmissions, there were still the people who said that manuals were real cars. How many manual transmission cars can you find today? Yet, my Camry has paddle shifters and a sport mode for 'manual' shifting, and if there was a manual transmission Camry, I could probably outrun it just because of faster shift times. People need to get a life. Don't apologize for bringing something up on your channel that someone may just watch and go 'Well, I didn't think I could ride a two wheel motorcycle, but I might be able to ride this.' If it even gets one sale, then it's worth it. The same goes for Honda's DCT.

    I had a Yamaha R1 which was fab, but was only really used for sunny blasts. However my commuting has changed and I needed a bike to commute so sold it and got an MP3 500 Business.... Its fantastic for commuting and is used a lot more than the R1 was. Highly recommended

    Just like Superchip, I bought one to commute across London on - never had any intention of being a biker. But the MP3 made me catch the bug. Now I'm on a VFR1200X and can't believe I've wasted 30 years of not biking. Got a lot of catching up to do, Thanks for being so open-minded in your assessment Russ. 👍

    The advantages of the MP3 are: 1) No gears - continuous variable speed 2) 3 braking wheels (vs 2 wheeled on a motorcycle, bicycle etc.) 3) drives and behaves like any other tilting motorcycle scooter etc.. 4) ability to "Lock" the front wheels (providing your speed is less than 5km/hr and you are straight (allowance of 5 degrees left or right)- This means that if you come to a red light and you stop on a puddle you do not need to put your foot down. 6) on turns, you have 2 wheels in touch with the road- a lot safer than a single wheel) . It is truly, an awesome ride.

    Nice review covering all that a biker or car driver needs to know. I don't want one of these but i am a disabled rider (non motorcycle related spine problems with metal work) but one day i may not be able to handle a bike safely and i would have to hang up my boots. This machine offers me a way to keep the feeling of riding a bike (sort of) but with a much easier method of handling that might be more suitable to disabled riders. Thanks for all your work review or vlog related. Ride Safe and keep it shiny side up.

    Jeremy...I have a leg injury sustained in the 1980s...I have one of these...the fact that I can lock the trike in the upright position means manoeuvring it is a doddle...it's a lot easier to roll it in and out of a space .

    With a single front wheel hitting a patch of diesel on a wet roundabout probably means you've just gone down, with two there's a reasonable chance that the second wheel still has grip. That's where the stability advantage really comes in. There's been a lot of work on TTWs (Tilting Three Wheelers) over the years and they've proven their advantage. You can run out of lean angle (not at sane road speeds) and it took them a while to eliminate patter between the two fronts. The tilt lock comes into play in really nasty weather, you can keep your feet inside a lap cover! I've never owned a scooter, but I've ridden a few of the big ones. They make a lot more sense as transport than most motorcycles. I'll not be giving up my GTS1000, Morini 350 Sport, Gilera CX, or any of the rest of the collection though.

    I owned the 400 version of this scooter for a while. I bought it for my wife to learn in the hope she would get the bug and we would go motorcycling together. She didn't so we have to go 2 up on my Kawasaki Voyager. I rode it a few times on 200km daily commutes and found it was an enjoyable bike to ride. I gave it to my son who had never ridden a motorcycle/scooter. He soon got the hang of it, got his permit and decided that he wanted a cruiser so it was sold. The 400 is capable of running at 110km'h (the national limit in Australia) easily but it is just as "at home" around the city. Make no mistake is not a Yamaha TriCity which is great for zipping in and out of the traffic and delivering pizza but would be useless on the open road. The two wheels provide extra stability even at high speed and the locking front wheels mean you don't have to put your feet down when the bike is stopped. As someone else has noted here it is best to have the bike stopped and upright before applying the lock - if you are leaning even a little bit the wheels will lock at the lean angle and this will be disconcerting when you take off again. Larger capacity scooters (over 200cc ) - they come as big as 850cc I believe are meant for touring. This one can do that well but the sports motorcycle screen is a useless when it comes to wind protection at high speed. I would recommend this bike to anyone who wants to ride but is a bit concerned about stability - the extra wheel is good for that. I reckon if you were doing a lot of open road riding the 500 might be a better option just because it has a bit more grunt. Whatever your ride forget the whole bike v scooter thing, forget the 2 wheels v 3 wheels and forget the 2 up front v the 2 in the back just ride what you like, what you can afford and get out on the road and enjoy it. They were very popular in mainland Europe where I think they were thought to be better suited to the cobbled streets in Paris and other places. I don't think many were sold in Australia.

    Matt, just come back to this vlog after owning a 2015 MP3 500 Sport ABS/ASR version.... I must say the best advice I was given (by the mechanic at the garage when I picked it up). is to stop and start putting your feet down and then lock the bike upright. Tyre pressures and checking them are important - especially across the front wheels..... I've got issues with my SI joint and the step thru features are great and have kept me on the road.... Ask Bambi as we have met on a number of rides over last 2 years lol

    I plan on purchasing the mp3 500 Business in the summer of 2017. I like the fact that it looks weird and I'd love it especially when I want to cruise around NYC. I will add it to my choice of transportation alongside my 2014 JCW mini Cooper Countryman. Also it will match up with the colors of white with black trim too. And yes I'd give 'em a thumbs up to the this Italian made trike as I did so to my German incorporated vehicle too the Mini.

    i have mp3 ie 250 which i take on the motorway every day doing 70mph. i'm averaging about 60 mpg. i have no bike licence or have i done a cbt. it cost me £360 to insure with no ncb and £38 to tax for the year. its costs about £9.00 to fill the tank up. on a big roundabout i can go round at about 40 mph and it feels very safe. i have felt front wheels go before but the bike stayed up right and stable. the only time i have used the stand was on a hill at every other time i just lock the front and use the hand brake. the only other bike i had ridden many years ago was a honda c90. as i car driver i would recommend this bike to anyone. i love mine. the bike was first registered in london but i live in portsmouth and have only ever seen three or four of these bikes here.

    A good few years ago I owned the 400 version of this for a short time. I bought it hoping my wife would get the bug and we could ride together. She never did and the machine was sold. In Australia where I live you need a motorcycle licence and you need to do the pre-rider training before you can get a learner's permit. The Australian version doesn't have the linked footbrake as shown here. The two wheels on the front are safer in wet, slippery or uneven road surface conditions. In my experience the 3 wheels acts like any other motorcycle. The 400 is not enormously powerful but it will pull away from the lights easily and hold the 110km/h all day although if I were using it for touring I think I'd go to the 500. The locking mechanism is handy for learners who have problems balancing the bike. Make sure the bike is perpendicular to the road or it will lock with a lean which will be unnerving when starting off.

    I would absolutely love one of these for winter commuting and did look into buying one to add to the stable. The extra stability in icy conditions would be great and If you can get knobblies for it, I'd tackle a heavy snow fall too! The problem for me with these is that they are relatively expensive. I just can't justify the price when there are many 'proper' bikes for around the same price. Great solution for many riders though..

    You can pick up the non-LT version second hand quite cheaply. You need a full licence for it as the wheel spacing being less than 450mm makes it a scooter, not a trike. You can buy snow tyres for them too.

    Whilst I do laugh at these trikes, you are absolutely correct about them being a great viable option of transport. I'd imagine they are inexpensive to buy, no doubt will be great on fuel, easy to ride with the twist n go and the extra stability will be what gets more people out of 4 wheels. I do envy the practicality of these trikes, plenty of room for a reasonable shop on the way home or just carting general stuff around. Only downside is filtering on these things from what I see in London, they are just that bit too wide to filter on.

    Good review. I was a keen motorcyclist for 35 years , until I had a stroke 2 years ago. Left side weak leg and a left arm and limited movement and can I only grip. the hand unable to extend fingers with a lot work I am slowely improving . I was thinking adapting a normal bike/ scooter , but the worry is pushing the bike around when I off it and dropping it. The ability to lock the front and a rear foot brake could be the answer. It would save a lot of money on costly adaptions - apart from moving the indicators. Any one else reading this who is disabled owns one of these? I would be intersted how they get on and any modidications.

  • @colinclarke4285

    @colinclarke4285

    Kelvin Rusling it depends on the definition of disability. .I have a pinned/plated right leg which has restricted my ability to ride two wheels ..so this is ideal. .. They are easy to manoeuvre with the tilt lock on (although the steering is not very tight turning circle)

    Probably a silly question but since this scooter takes up no more room than say a big 600cc bike, would I be right in saying you could park this in a motorcycle bay? also whilst you can ride this on a full uk car licence do you have to have completed a cbt at least once or is it at least recommended?

    trying to get my head round the license rules and it looks to me that to ride this on a car license you have to have had a license before January 2013 that had a B1 category. For new licesnses anything with three wheels needs a bike license, including the morgan moog, and quad bikes need a car license B1. Also be careful when buying a used example as the smaller capacity older bikes didnt have the front wheels far enough apart to be classed as a trike.

    You shouldn't have apologised at the end. It's your channel, it was a good review of a funky little trike. It would get boring if you only reviewed sports bikes, Harleys and other stereotypically 'manly' bikes. Also did you upload this soon after recording it? It's just that 16 degrees sounds very warm for the beginning of December.

    I guess it may be an option for a car driver who wants to commute and save sitting in traffic, looks like you could pack a fair bit in the storage area too, i wonder what it's like fuel consumption wise ? though i think a lot will depend on the purchase price, i don't think it's horrible just very different and it's filling a gap in the market.

    I had the 500cc model for 2 years; it returned 55mpg no matter where or how I rode it, city or motorway. Cheap as chips to insure (even though I didn't even have CBT). It's a daft loophole (450mm spacing between front wheels makes it a trike) but I'm grateful: it got me into biking!

    +Motorbiker Not anymore. If you pass you car license after January 2014, you also have to get yourself at least an A1 automatic license. Car license before that date? You are free to ride a MP3 without any training (nuts).

    If you can ride it on a car license, does that mean you can't filter or ride in bus lanes? Presumably it's listed as a car on the V5C and is therefore subject to the same rules as cars?

    Ps i would be much happier if there was a geared version of this as that is my major dislike of this type of bike/trike, twist and go isn't biking. A 500cc with 4 or more gears would be a lot more attractive to me if (when unfortunately!!!) i feel i can no longer handle a 2 wheeled bike.Thanks again.

    +Snipe Camp Sadly you will not be able to drive it on a car license until you are 21, if you look on the Piaggio website it states you can ride on on a car license as long as you are over 21. I think this is the same with all tricycles if they are over 15kw. The law changed on the 19th January 2013, so if you have your car license issued after that you need to be 21 to ride them. There are other factors also in legislation that you might want to check up on as I have left some things out.

    I love motorcycles and can appreciate all the forms but for me I dont want to ride a geared bike! I drive an manual car and have driven autos but gears on a bike I can’t be bothered, Ive tried it and I just didn’t enjoy it, I also have a left ankle injury which makes gears changes sometimes uncomfortable, added to this I love scooters I’m just more drawn to them, the comfort and the ease of it its just more me. I’ve been looking to do my full test it’s shocking how I’ve only found one place in my area I can do an A2 on an automatic....no options to do an unrestricted on an auto, i just get asked why don’t you do it on a manual, my answer because I don’t want to and I want to enjoy the experience and not be stressing trying to force myself to master a skill of gears that I never intend to use just so I can ride the top end engine maxi scooters. I get told its easy and we can get you through it. No one seems to grasp that i dont want to just get through it and on top of that pay more money for more days training ill need to master a geared bike. I have to go and buy a top end cc scooter of my own to take the A licence test. I understand that i am probably a bit on my own as most people do want a geared bike but still why is our whole country got such a downer on scooters! This little three wheeled bike is great it gives an opening to people who otherwise might not be able to experience riding for one reason or another and that is important. I am a believer in sod what anyone else thinks if I like it and i’m having fun on my ride let them laugh I really dont care

    Piagio do a bigger CC than the 300. Gilera Fuago is a 500cc bike with that format. I owned one for about 18 months but couldn't get used to the lack of power. At best it flattened out at 80mph and was useless on the motorway. Also, when cornering, you are limited with the amount of lean you can use because to much speed can cause you to run out of bend because you can't hang it down low enough without lifting one of the front wheels. The degree of lean locks out too soon for a serious flirt around the roads. No good for filtering because of the two front wheels. To ride the 500cc version one needs a bike licence because the two front wheels where closer together..and it didn't have the foot brake.

  • @plengnom

    @plengnom

    8 жыл бұрын

    It can do 40 degrees lean, which is more than many cruiser-type bikes, and way more than you'll ever _need_ on the street. Why is the extra wheel no good for filtering? I found it to be excellent - especially when driving on the lines in rain, very stable. Also, the 500-version in sale now can be driven on a car license, if you got your license before 2013. I do agree about the lack of power on motorways though. Its a heavy bike (285kg!), and 40hp just isnt enough for 70+ mph.

  • @glennmaxfield6618

    @glennmaxfield6618

    8 жыл бұрын

    The trouble with the extra wheel when filtering is that you can't slip down the inside between the car and curb. With one wheel at the front you don't have trouble with the footpath. The degree of lean is poor when trying to corner at speed. When I say speed I don't mean commuter speeds. OK, if you suffer confidence issues then that second front wheel does help but slippy road paint when wet is not really an issue to me. Also, the suspension is complex and very expensive to keep serviced properly. If not greased correctly it becomes stiff and leaning the bike becomes more of an effort. Having owned one for nearly two years I can safely say I wouldn't buy another.... Ever.
