Physiotherapy for Children's Intoeing | The Best Exercises to help with Children's Intoeing

As a paediatric physiotherapists, I have seen many parents concerned about their children’s intoeing walking pattern. Therefore, I decided to make this video because I know that intoeing walking is a common paediatric condition.
So, what’s intoeing walking? It’s called pigeon walking in which the child walks with feet turned inwards. Intoeing may develop before birth or soon after birth. Generally it happens with both feet but sometimes only one foot is involved.
The reasons for intoeing walking can be due to (1) curved feet (metatarsus adductus) (2) twisted shinbone (tibial torsion) and one leg is usually affected or (3) twisted thighbone (femoral anteversion) and usually both legs are affected. Depends on the cause of intoeing, it may correct itself when the child grows older, or it may persist into adulthood.
It’s important to mention than intoeing may be a symptom of neurological, neurodevelopmental, or a developmental condition. This is why it’s essential to consult a paediatric orthopaedics or a paediatric physiotherapist to assess your child’s lower limbs and then to plan for the appropriate intervention.
I am going to demonstrate some physiotherapy exercises to help treat and prevent complications of intoeing walking pattern;
- Stretching: deep squat, split on heels, butterfly; pulses, hold, & press, and hamstring long sitting variations (view the video for the demo).
- Strengthening: squat, walk sideways, walk forward/backward, jacks, kick a ball with inner foot, kick a balloon. All exercises should be done with toes turned outwards.
Consult a paediatric physiotherapist before applying these exercises with your child.
